No, asshole confirmed. In the way he is writing it seems that he has some money. To not even offer some money for DOG sitting for three freaking weeks is crazy. It would be different if it was just house sitting. Because then the question could have been like “hey, our house is empty for three weeks and if you feel like it you can live there” and that would been okay without pay of course. But with the dog involved and the difference in economics between the persons OP is a verified asshole.

I know not everyone shares that attitude though, and if my friend asked to be paid I'd gladly throw some cash their way.

Yeah, if they just phrased it as "my BnB will be empty for a few weeks if you wanted some getaway time, you'd just have to watch the dog" and maybe throw them some % of the kennel costs then they come out fine. For the meal planning one, I would be pretty exhausted by the idea of having to plan out exactly what I'm going to eat on each day, but I'm fine if I can like... "here's 4 things I'd like to have as dinners over the course of the next week, lets get those ingredients, and I'll make sure they get used in a reasonable time" so I can still be flexible about what days I feel like cooking vs not, and what days I feel like cooking meals that might require more time/effort. The problem to me though is OP in that thread never tried to seek a middle ground, and just saw it as an all or nothing scenario and choose to break communication instead of working it out together.

She probably just wants to do like what we do, agree before the shopping is done on a collection of meals that could be had during the week, buy the ingredients and improvise as the week goes on. Sometimes because of short dates and stuff you can't always have the exact meal you want every day, but you need some idea of what to eat to just be able to buy stuff.

Just because you plan it in advance doesn't mean the list of things you know how to cook is suddenly evaporated. The only way it can be limiting is realizing that you're not really craving the last option and the vegetables you bought are starting to go bad. The only reason we do it tbh is I dont like going to the store and like to maximize the amount of time I'm able to relax at home.

This would be like paying ones kids tuition and then the other kid expecting a $75,000 lump sum because "You're like, totally forcing your own personal values on my by not just giving me money for no reason!".
It really is pretty simple. If you want to achieve some specific goal (home-ownership, degree, kids, etc) here is some financial help. Otherwise, you can receive nothing unless you need specific help. Why would I give you money to help achieve a goal that you have no ambition to reach?

They even implied something like that by saying she constantly called him names and was constantly bringing it up. She sounds like one of those mildly verbally abusive parents who doesn't understand why their kids snap at them. He felt accomplished that her put-downs amounted to nothing and that he did well enough in school with a job. She definitely thinks going to school is the most important thing and it definitely wasn't her idea for him to get a job while still in school. She didn't like it and acted out little by little. The bio dad should’ve absolutely recommended for her to offer to the adoptive dad, and for her to treat her bio parents like they’re better when they left her is wrong as well. A parent should want their child to flourish and have all the opportunities they can for a rich and fulfilling life, but they put themselves first.

I’m not saying they had the right to take that relationship from her, but I am saying that the biological parents don’t get to just decide they love someone they threw to the curb because there’s no emotional consequences for doing so. As a parent you have final say on every adult that child spends time with, and you are under no obligation to let any adult spend time with your child even if it's an adopted child. Their justification of being afraid the kid would like the bio parents more is a bad one, but it underscores the real issue which is that a child needs a stable home life and introducing your child to two strangers and saying 'hey btw here are your real mom and dad' is basically the opposite of stability. It opens up so many potential issues. What if you're having a fight with your teenage child over something and they run off to their bio parents who have a different opinion on the issue? How can you trust the bio parents to do the right thing and defer to your judgement as a parent? You can't, because you don't even know them.
My mom kicked my dad out of our lives when I was 5 for being a drunk and abusive loser with no job. She prevented him from having any contact with me hard as he tried. Anyway when I turned 18 she gave me the letters he had sent over the years that she had kept from me and told me it was my choice to see him. I don't really have a drive or interest in planning out foods, as food is simply just that to me - food.

Assuming the gf isn't also an asshole, she'd probably be willing to come up with the ideas herself since its basically for her sole benefit, so she should have no problem with it. If he's seriously so opposed to having a predetermined plan (one that he's "approved") then he needs to think about why he's incapable of making/sticking to decisions or perhaps re-examine his relationship with eating. Specifically I'm thinking this would be a polar opposite of chore-eating and he's just impulsively following a craving for every meal.
Also they could probably compromise with maybe 4 pre-planned meals per week? They could even freeze leftovers so there's a good selection of food if they want to do something else, and then it's also more cost-efficient and timesaving for both of them.

      @Toraxa Před 2 lety +6

Food isn't so much a chore for me, but I don't ever have cravings, and my favorite meals are just meals I am particularly fond of the taste of. If I'm asked what I want for dinner, my brain freezes with choice paralysis, because there are hundreds of things we could have and no reason visible to me to pick one over another. So my method for grocery shopping has always been to just get the basics. Bread, meat and cheese for sandwiches, flexible vegetables for sides, and so on. So that when it is time to eat my choices are constrained by the food available to me and I can just pick something in the moment.
If my girlfriend wanted to plan out a big thing, that's fine with me, but I'm not really going to have useful input. Whatever she wants to do is fine. So I can kind of see where this guy is coming from. Though I also have a history with bullshit related to this, as growing up my mother loved to insist that someone else choose where we were going out to dinner despite us all knowing that none of us were very picky, and she had all kinds of considerations. So because she didn't want the "responsibility" of picking, but she wanted the control of being in charge, we got to play this stupid game where we would all come up with ideas only for her to shut them down until we finally arrived at the place she had wanted to go all along but refused to take the initiative to offer up.

Hey redittors, if you think having kids makes your life so easy and loved by everyone, why don't you do yourself a favor and have a kid or two so that you can get in on all those great benefits?
Also in this specific case, it's cool for parents to support their kids who do things that they love, like giving them grandkids.

For anyone curious about the update for the adopted parents wedding story, I would recommend not looking it up cause its just really upsetting. I was originally gonna agree that the AP's are the asshole but after reading that update and the comments section, it becomes apparent that OP is just an apathetic monster who should never have been adopted in the first place.

@@SpencerLemay Honestly I dont think that's necessarily being an apathetic monster, OP must've felt extremely betrayed by the actions of the adoptive parents, and this is their retaliation for being denied contact with their biological parents. While the adoptive parents did take care of OP, they seem like assholes for holding it over OP's head. It's sort of the AP's own fault too, they were obsessive over trying to prevent "OP liking their biological parents more" and then pulled the woe is me card instead of reflecting and admitting they shouldn't have done that. Their lack of self-reflection makes me think they had it coming, even though they'll probably try to shift the blame.

That second story is wild to me, because I could not imagine using my child as a tool of spite against my ex. If they were like "Hey I know it's short notice, but I need you to keep our child for the weekend because I have to fly out of the state" I would jump at the chance to spend more time with them. And I love the reply that was like "You should've gone to court to get full custody" Because it's like 1) She doesn't want the kid for a weekend, what makes you think she wants him full time and 2) Courts don't look fondly on parents who don't actively want to spend more time with their children.

Most of my meal planning friends either grew up rurally or below the poverty line. Or they’re super into fitness and want to plan out their macros. But for a lot of people planning groceries is about ensuring food security and budgeting. Choosing whatever on the spur of the moment, unless you set a per-meal budget, isn’t always viable.
Taking her food does make him a massive arsehole.

With the paying for the kids thing, yes, dude is spoiling his kids, yes he is financially encouraging them to procreate, and it is pretty weird that he is doing all that, but the daughter is still the asshole because she's the one demanding money for nothing anyway.
If anything, she's the most spoiled one of them all because she's seemingly in a completely financially secure situation and still going "daddy pays for the lifestyle of all my siblings, why don't *I* get my lifestyle payed for too?"
I feel like a normal person in her situation would be like "no thanks I don't need the money I'm good with what I have;" the Succession comparison is not off base.

OP's whole deal is paying for his kids and grandkids to **start their lives on the right foot** not bankrolling them into adulthood if they're already financially stable and don't actually **need** the help. it's a totally consistent and **extremely** generous system that he's got going and i really don't feel any sympathy at all for her wanting to milk it even further.

@@vcostello712 " OP's whole deal is paying for his kids and grandkids to *start their lives on the right foot* not bankrolling them into adulthood"
That's definitely his intention and I think OP from that post is trying his best to make his family happy/fulfilled, but his actions are 100% bankrolling his kids into adulthood. His older kids (in their mid/late 30s) are still having all expenses (food/rent/medical bills/car payments/etc.) paid for and one of his sons has 6 kids of his own that the OP admitted couldn't be financially supported without him.
OP kept mentioning that the cost of raising children is high (which is true) but he's going above and beyond and has no idea what that cost is. Later in that thread, he admitted that one of his granddaughters spends $500 a week on video games and he sees that as completely normal.
He's extremely generous and that generosity is causing/has caused his kids and grandkids to become very spoiled, as can be seen with the lady who wants vacation money

I can see why someone with that mindset would be annoyed with someone trying to force them to meal plan, especially if there is no pressing financial or health related reason to do so.

Was wondering if you wanted to get away from your place for a little and house sit for us. The one where the dad is paying all the grandkids until they're 21 is pretty nuts. Love it but I can't imagine being so lucky. Not sure what the solution is for the child free daughter. If he pays for the dog then the other siblings may be like what about my pets? And I'm sure the dad is wondering what if she decides she doesn't want to stay child free?
I think the biggest problem is that the money is going to more than just the kids. It seems like the dad's intention was to support every family member until they were 21 not the kids so long as they kept having kids.

I had a different take on the meal planning one. NL basically came from the premise that the guy gets hungry, decides he wants some specific thing, and nothing else will do, so they have to get delivery or last minute grocery store run. Then that's a YTA.
But my take was the guy just doesn't care. Like, ok, I'm hungry, if you want to cook, I'll eat anything, or else I can just raid the fridge. From that perspective, NAH.
