What Really Goes On Inside The Grounded Planes and Engineering?

- With so many aircraft being grounded during the COVID pandemic, in this video I discover the answer to how do airlines store and re-activate airplanes? I asked Etihad Engineering about the work required to store an airplane, protect the plane from heat, humidity, sand and dust; I also inquired into the processes involved in bringing a stored plane back to service.
Then I took a tour of the Etihad Engineering hangar, observing how the maintenance is carried out. A lot of behind-the-scenes repair and maintenance work goes on in the hangar. Finally, I visited the airline workshop; to see how they manufacture and repair seat covers, engine covers, toilet doors and bulkhead panels. A lot of work is carried out to make sure the planes are well maintained.
I asked a few questions on the future outlook of aviation engineering and the entry requirements for a person looking to get into aviation engineering.
Finally, I would like to thank all the hard-working ground staff and engineers during the pandemic; their work didn't slow down (it actually increased) making sure that aviation remains safe and that standards are being maintained.

As an engineer myself it’s great to see us finally get some mainstream exposure that most people will always forget about! Great video
It's so interesting to note that how innovative Sam has been getting with his content even in these uncertain times!
Unravelling the nittie-gritties of an aircraft and a million small elements that go into a making of an aircraft, the finer aspects that we often tend to overlook while flying normally otherwise!
Thanks for the amaze coverage in this video!
Thank you so much of your appreciation. I believe the content should be balanced. There are still so much in aviation I haven't covered. Lots on my to do list.
@@SamChui How's the flying going ? Do you have any opportunity to advance your training in Dubai ?

Hi
Show great respect to these engineering guys behind the scene all over the world during this hard time. Thank you all. As a pilot feeling safe to fly again.
We take good care of our planes, the most supreme care of course
Kim Jong-un that is why they are grounded for 6 months in a year. Mind buying new aircraft?
hahahahahaa
My heartfelt salutations to the supreme leader of north korea for keeping your planes well and also keeping your country free from plandemic corona.
Isee you everywhere lol
Hello Supreme leader! Most glorious master of all
Thanks for bringing us along, Sam. That was very interesting!

Sam this is the greatest video you have ever created. Absolutely astonishing. A massive credit and respect for Ethihad to give you the insight! Just brilliant! ✊🏽
Another fantastic video Sam it’s great to see the people behind the scenes who look after these planes
Love it when Sam uploads behind the scenes operations. Quite fascinating to watch. Ty Sam
Great video Sam, thanks for sharing
Thanks for doing this video, I was wondering what went into the storage of aircraft during this time. As I suspected a great deal of maintenance required to keep them in a fit state to fly. Loved the dive in to the routine maintenance programmes too! Brilliant as always 👍
Engineering needs more attention and more coverage. Hope sam will cover it in future 👍👍
Loved the video!
Thank you 😊
This is what makes your channel unique. You go deep into aviation details rather than doing only flight reviews. Hope all aircrafts are back in the sky soon
Love your vids Sam.
You making days better .
Great Video. Thank you for posting.
Thanks Sam. Great video, very educational. Really sad how new airplanes may be retired due to rust etc. Again, we have to stand strong through this time.
Fascinating video, Sam. Just finished watching your catering video as well. So much going on in the background. It's opened my eyes to a whole new world of aviation. Good stuff. Thank you.
One of your best videos so far.
Great effort ! Keep it up.👍
Awesome as usual 👍❤️
I've never seen a similar behind the scenes video. Thanks for sharing the mammoth engineering that goes behind the scenes.
Fascinating video - thanks for making it!

Nice vid Sam! Amazing quality🙌
Amazing, awesome, great Sam.
Thank you.
The time, effort and cost of doing all this. Amazing video Sam!!
This was fascinating, and yet a bit sad. I hope that soon these aircraft will be back in the air. Thank you for this behind the scenes look, it certainly brings appreciation to the hard work and dedication of so many.
Brilliant! Thank you
It's very humid in the middle east? I always thought it was a dry desert heat. very interesting! Thanks Sam!
They are by the sea.
Mostly all countries in the middle east are by the sea, so..
Sam you find one unique thing after another that no other aviation blogger seems to get to and you get to do amazing things. Please keep up the good work sir and God bless.
Thank you Sam for this video. Aviation is lot more. This is real backstage hope travelers appreciate!
That was very interesting to see the behind the scene activity of the aircraft maintenance facility. Fascinating.
Sam, as someone who works in the industry, and a big proponent of STEM education, thanks for these very insightful videos!
Your channel and videos have been the main drive for me to do aeronautical engineering. Fortunately I'll be learning about it next year
Sam, I love every single one of your videos. Being an corporate A&P Flight tech, I appreciate this video more than you can imagine. I am going to link to this on our Facebook page!!! Thank you!!
Dear Sam... you are a true motivational.... i am first generation traveling in flight...I travelled in Etihad for the first time as my international travel... that too in Business class what a wonderful experience.... keep up... we will meet soon if time permits... hats off...
Sam another fantastic and educational vlog
It’s a wonder how any airlines survive with this type of insane detail and cost.
No matter how good they wrap the plane something will happen. They’re made to use.
You are perfectly correct. The detail inspections called for in these 'return to service' checks can often lead to findings that will require more work, and or replacement of very expensive parts. The covering/blanking of every orifice on the airplane is carried out to prevent birds and insects from building nest in them so after removing the covers we have to check very closely and purge the openings and then function the systems to make sure that they operate normally.
There are different kinds of fluids in the plane that needs checking and maybe replacement too, and that includes the fuel in the tank. Fuel tanks are never left empty and dry as this will lead to deterioration of the sealants that lined the insides of the tank. Thats almost wing tip to tip!
Sam you doing great work
Keep it up
I absolutely love these kinds of videos Sam !! Cant wait until we can start flying again 💪
Wow ... great video !

Wow! Amazing video, and much respect for crews taking care of aircrafts. That's a ton of work!!!
Sam, I always enjoy your content. But this went above and beyond. Instead of showing this as the end of the line for aircraft being stored, you showed it as a positive transition. Not doom and gloom (Quantus 747). Thank you for insipring next generation engineers as well.
Brilliant presentation!
Hey Sam! Great video as always :)
A wonderful new episode, keep going SAM 👌🏼🌹🌹🌹🌹

Dear Sam, thank you for keeping us with travel mode . Wish see you soon on one of the aircraft flight.
Sam your videos are always awesome! Loved this!! 🥰❤
i really commend the workers at these grounding sites. they first wrap, then 30 days later they fully unwrap, then test, and finally rewrap the whole plane again.
i hate wrapping presents so this is a nightmare of a process :(
Grate video!
Great job Sam. That is good information to know how well a company care for their equipment.
Great behind the scenes video Sam! I’m a mechanical engineer, so I really enjoy this stuff.
Sam: How many *hours* does it take to bring it back to service
Engineer: Its takes *3-4 days* 😅
