By far the most convincing faux rust treatment tutorial on CZcams and perhaps one of the least labor intensive also. I’d be curious to see how you’d approach patches of rust on an otherwise uniform/homogeneous surface, i.e...what you’d do to quickly define the edges of such patches without outlining them using any time consuming process. Keep up the good work and thanks.

Yes that’s a great idea I’ve only used that technique for miniatures I never have tried it on big scale projects.
Woooooooooah... I like that... I like it a lot! So quick but really effective and most of all realistic.
This is wonderfully informative, just what I need to restore some old tole fixtures to their former glory!
( they were quite rusty, but I had to arrest the process. After trying a few different approaches like traditional painting and wax finishes, I realize the thing I liked most about them was the rust).

Hey! I love this video so much! The technique is super simple and forgiving! Can this faux rust metal object be kept outdoors? Will the rain affect the spray paint? Or do we need to apply some lacquer to lock the rusty look?

I'll take every paint technique you have to offer. Realistic aging effects really are an art.
Is there any specific technique that you’re looking for let me know.
@@theunemployedpropguy3188 Anything about aging metal. Each metal does its own thing. But the environment matters too. Is it indoors or out? Exposed to water or not? Chipping paint on metal isnt the same as with wood.
There's something about the patina that different metals develops that fascinates me and I'm working to recreate them.
The other is concrete and stone. I really struggle with moss and slime growth.
Weather patterning in general on all of these materials.
My third interest is recreating stone and brick in a hyper-realistic way. I want people to lean forward, study really close and not be able to tell until they actually touch it. That's a whole new level.
And finally sandstone or limestone. I want to create a wall that looks like natural sandstone or limestone with cave art paintings and hand prints. I cannot imagine anything cooler to have in my home than something that looks like it was cut from the earth itself with actual cave art. That's my goal for one of my living room walls.
If you can give any of these lessons, I'm there. I'll watch them a dozen times, study them, buy whatever products that are necessary, practice, practice, practice, then recreate.
Good luck with any of these. This stuff is so much FUN but to do it well takes a little extra that I don't have. (yet)

This is brilliant. I've never seen rust so convincingly done without the "cheat" of using the rust patinas with activators (expensive). This uses things that I have on hand, other than the Dustin Mizer, but I'm guessing I could figure out something for that. Thank you!

Thanks, i dust it with Kreylon clear matte. I find if u use matte it doesn’t change the look too much but i some times use gloss clear for cool look but you need to test test test good luck -UEPG

Thanks for the comment. So this was just a test piece so I used foam core this technique can be used on pretty much on any kind of material I’ve even done it on fabric which didn’t really look that good but whatever. The bolts were actually large nuts that I filled with a water putty and gave it a little texture and then just glued them on the board. Good luck and have fun

Never painted a car with it. always thought about doing it. It is spray paint so like all spray paint UV light is the enemy you can spray clearcoat on it it would change the look a little bit if you use Mat industrial spray it may achieve your wanted affect.

You could basically use the same technique with acrylic and small Hudson sprayers that you could pick up at a hardware store. When I have done this before I’ve based the color in a Silver that I didn’t mix too well i used to prefer Ralph Lerann polo paint but I don’t know if that’s available anymore. I also used a lot more denatured alcohol in my rust colors hope this helps
Amazing job, you are a true artist in your field. I've been youtube surfing for the perfect method of "grunging" up my motorcycle tank for a post-apocalyptic look. This, my friend, is the method I'm going to use. My vision is for it to look like the original paint job was similar to a robin's egg blue but with rust coming through. Could you expand a little on what it would look like by adding the robin's egg blue colour? Would it appear as though the original blue paint was rusted or would it give a more rusty copper result? Hey, thanks for the comment. I appreciate it. What I’ve done in the past is paint the metal object, with high quality automotive paint the color I want like robins egg, blue, let it cure. Then use my technique with a heavy water and denatured alcohol or acetone. Mix being safe, of course not smoking while spraying lol and just going very light with the dusting of the rust and or black brown and just having someone sitting there hitting it really hard with the water/Acetone solution sometimes used in a sponge to wipe away or add texture to part. And also masking off areas with a light brush of Vaseline, making almost like cloud like shapes At the sametime thinking about the history of the object and how it got rust from being left outside or in a barn . The good part is you just can keep on playing until you get it to look the way you want and just go slow. Hope this helps.
Thank you for such a quick response. I've tried some different youtube techniques but the results were never as good as the videos. I'll give this method a go but this time putting some actual thought and consideration in the rusting history. Perhaps this is the missing ingredient which caused my previous attempts to fail. I have used pretty much any kind of paint acrylic latex , enamel and oil. Obviously it’s lot less messy using water base paint but the oil does last a lot longer even though it takes longer to cure. I have mixed glossy semi glossy and flat and I’ve gotten some cool results to it’s all about layering. The most important part of this process is to have fun and let it flow naturally it actually becomes a dance yes I’m a paint geek

Wondering what kind of paint or colorant are the yellow and red oxides being mixed with water and isopropyl alcohol. They aren't acrylic colors, are they?
There both waterbase. yellow is what they use at paint stores for mixing color And the red oxide is airbrush paint i had laying Around
Question, can you use this for automotive paint such as a custom motorcycle? Also, once done could you spray flat clear to protect it from elements and gas?
I’ve always wanted to turn one of those flat track replicas into a barn find by using my technique. I have used some automotive spray paint before and I just added a lot of acetone or denatured alcohol to my water spray and that seemed like it worked fine. Good luck.

What is the tool you use for applying the fullers earth?
For small projects I use a Kraft tool Dc615 glitter gun. that's what I used in this video and for big jobs I use a
