  • Episode 3 of Coded Season 3 takes you into the world of penetration tester, Jayson E. Street, who is paid to break into banks to discover their vulnerabilities.
Like many self-professed hackers, Jayson doesn't see his ability as a destructive force, but rather a powerful tool for improvement, and making things more secure. He sees hacking as a an innate human quality - the curiosity to challenge what we're told and do things different. For pentesters like Jayson E. Street, that means understanding how things work, and breaking them down to make them better - in his case, bank security. Confidently breaking the rules, going places he shouldn't, using social engineering and hacking techniques, and looking for weaknesses in bank's defenses, is all in a day's work for one of the world's most sought after pentesters.

It’s surprising how effective blagging is when youre in a company setting. People, who are not trained to detect fraudulent behaviour and liars, are not usually effective at preventing behaviours like the one he spoke about in the banks.
I think it comes down to 2 factors.
    1. Motivation. In your house, you don’t let anyone in because it’s a directly personal setting. You don’t want your stuff robbed. Same goes with if you’re in your friends house, in that you’ll prevent this happening on to them.
In a company however, people have no relationship with the property of the corporation... so why defend it?
    2. Avoiding Confrontation/ confidence: It takes a lot of balls to tell someone you know their game when it’s not even on display. It takes an even greater amount of balls if a wrong call on it may affect your own relationship with whoever that game is associated with. Consequently people don’t like risking their own asses when there is little to no reward in the face of a test of testicles.
These 2 factors mean that most people are usually uneager to confront inexplicit threat when it comes to their employers. They don’t want to risk themselves for something they don’t care about.
This is why what he did is probably reproducible most large to corporate sized companies working environments that do not have measures in place to prevent it.

u13erfitz pen tests can include physical assessments, if that’s within scope, in his case he is very skilled at social engineering and covert recon. Your systems are behind an air-gap, he goes in and plugs in a wi-fi dongle and loads some code on the machine, now that machine is accessible outside the bank and he can attack digitally any time he wants. People assume that their systems are secure, until you realise they are operated by people who are doing a 9-5 and most people are naturally trusting, not wanting to cause any trouble, and a white knight appearing and saying he’s here to help you, sounds very appealing.
