I find it strange how I went from "what the fuck is this shit" *proceeds to turn off right away* to a legitimate fan of Aesop Rock. I guess I had to graduate first to appreciate his brilliance. I didn't start really liking him until like 2019. I just wasn't ready. As of today I just think Aes is simply making a point. He has to be! There's no way any mere mortal can continuously drop project after project given his abstract style and still come up with new material. I think he's modestly showing us how sharp he is. Never seen a rapper with more wit than this guy. I am in awe at this man's lyrical ability 😳

I first got into him around 2012ish. Skelethon really clicked with me and there was no looking back. You never know what will grab you. I prob listened to that album 50 times before cycles to Gehenna suddenly burrowed into my brain and became my favorite aes song to this day. All it took was one dude quoting coffee lyrics in a dark souls walkthrough video and I was instantly curious. Its funny that even though I've listened to this fool over a decade im still a newb in a lot of fans eyes.

Eventually one of the flight attendants came over and asked Oloff if he would perform one of his songs to calm Jar Jar down, and when Oloff began rapping the first verse to Doing It Stealthy, Jar Jar immediately relaxed. To this day the two are still close friends.

Lice isn't on Spotify because none of their work is monetized. I actually appreciate what they do; making people wake up. Instead of letting them pay for a subscription, or get some free shit with ads, expecting that you'll be given what you're looking for. They make people search for what they love. You want something? You gotta go get that shit. Buy a cd and support the cause directly. Otherwise, keep swiping... And if you love the work, you'll tell your friends they should fuck with this shit. Word of mouth is still the most effective and most honest form of marketing. Fuck Spotify.

I bought Impossible Kid from Aes years ago, but don't have the finances to support all my favorite artists every time. I do however have $7 a month to listen to Spotify. And while I agree that music platforms massively underpay artists, I'm not going back to downloading CZcams audio and converting it to MP3, or hitting up Limewire. I'm relegated to listening on CZcams now, and while that's not too hard to do, it's just messy to have some songs here and some there. And now I'm back to having ads. Though, I respect what you're saying, and in a perfect world I could buy every single Aes album. And yes, word of mouth is still king.

I was actually at a Deca + Homeboy Sandman show recently in Boston, and I was smoking a cigarette after the show with Deca, and I mentioned I had first heard of him on Spotify. He said "Yeah, you know, a lot of people shit on Spotify, and rightly so, but I can't deny that they've done me a lot of favors."
I help out where I can in terms of buying albums and merch directly from artists, but I'm not gonna cancel my Spotify subscription of 13+ years because of it. I have discovered too much new music to just let it go. Plus with being able to curate playlists and download music to listen to offline, the convenience far outweighs the desire to "stick it to the man," so to speak.
