Sang this to my dog before he was taken to the vet and embarked in the great run in the sky, and could bask under an eternal sun. I can't make it even 30 seconds into Bob's singing and John's absolutely calming voice. Period. This was the first song by the dead that absolutely gutted me and left me sobbing. If I gave a single reason they are the greatest group of musicians alive, I'd point to this.
Don't want to get into debates about who or what is better, but john fits this role so well and is so absolutely studious... I wish we had a NYE show to look forward to. Thanks to everyone who made this band happen... I've never seen people adapt to playing GD music so well so quickly.. most of the other guys who do it have been doing it for most of their lives.
Dear JM: If you still read the message boards like you say you do (and happen to stumble on this) .. You're doing better than anyone could ever expect you to do in that role... and that's coming from a deadhead who is looking forward to more Trio. You are a natural prankster and fit this scene so well, people just take time to realize what the music industry did to a lot of people.. You've managed to segue into this, and it's what we all needed... and now we need it more than ever. GD music is "church" for a lot of us. We need you all! Don't be hard on yourself, but continue to be studious as you are in all things, it's great to have watched your career through my adult years. Vocal range has been impressive as you've evolved with D&C vox.... and you do covey the emotion well.. Deadheads are critics of everything, sometimes to a fault! You guys have made something work in 2 tours that hasn't felt quite right in decades. And yes, we all tear up during this song. :) You guys all really started gelling well on the west coast, keep it up dude! The only thing I'd like to see more of is you and jeff doing some fun stuff (will someone please turn the hammond up??!??! His other equipment sounds fine, the hammond sounds muted even when you guys are really getting into it) :) Having Oteil come alive on the west coast was what really made it sink in for me that this band needs to keep going... for all of us.
Couldn't have conveyed this message better myself, very well thought out. keep it up JM, I'm glad I've discovered more of your music through all you've done with D&C!
I could die happily to this song. You can't have any negative emotions lsiienting to this. I struggle with depression, and I can say this confidently. I actauly believe you relate and identify with this song even more having gone through trauma.
I have been to about 8 D&C concerts all on the east coast. Actually met Bob in a bar in Boston after the show, John was there as well but did not get a chance to say hi to him. There was no one else in the bar except one other lady and the guys were relaxing and did not want to bother them but as Bob was walking out we said hi and he shook my father-in-laws (who has been a life-long dead head) hand. I am a fan favorite of JM but I admired him before he hooked up with the DEAD. You can feel the emotion in his voice when he's singing, it takes my breathe away. I am so sad you cancelled the tour but with COVID it's expected all though I feel we could all really use some live D&C action right now! Praying next time I see JM I am able to meet him or shake his hand. Love you guys sending love & light your way.
The band sounds so beautifully United ... John's voice was absolutely mesmerizing to me on this. All of them so heartfelt... It touched my soul. Thanks for the post.
I don't know old ya are all but seeing the. dead since the mid 70s John has done incredible and he needs a that a boy and God bless Bobby and the boys for careening the torch it's all to good to believe it's true from and old dead head a heartfelt thank you keep on keeping on
This will be the final song at my funeral service. Jerry? John? Bobby? Matters not. My soul heads for heaven with these words. Thank you boys. Every freakin' one of you.
This has always been one of my favorite songs for many years. I don’t think anyone can do it better then Jerry, but at least people are hearing the songs.
John Mayer? With former Dead band members? Who would have thought? Keep it up, people. “Sometimes you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right” /|\
BTW to people commenting on vocals in a negative way.. They've gotten a lot better. This was before two full tours... John's vox have gotten SUBSTANTIALLY better, and I don't think they were terrible..but I would say he improved by a factor of 10 through the 2016 tour.... To be able to do that is impressive. Still have a few songs on the catalog i think would cater to JM .. where's the recommendation box? Also, show me a jam band that's ever competed with lyrics or vocals with the dead? There isn't a single one. There are some very musically talented jam bands out there, but nobody touches their vox and lyrical depth.
I love Phish and the Dead but even Mayer at his worst is a better vocalist than Trey at his absolute best. Great choice, interesting jams. Way more of a musical experience than Furthur or Fare Ther Well IMO
@@riro1024 got brought back to this by a reply to another comment.. but totally agree... the one thing the dead have always had is a stage full of vocalists, and it sets them apart. Most people don't even know that john has had at least 3 vocal chord surgeries, the last time he had to botox his vocal chords and couldn't even try to talk for months. This was only a couple years before deadco.. They gave him about 0 chance of singing on stage ever again. and he still tries to fill these vocals as perfectly as he can.... in the only role on earth where every fan is a critic.
This is a really quiet youtube video, I have the volume maxed from my laptop into headphones, I can't get it loud enough? Sorry to complain, the video is great as is the audio and performance, just can't get it loud enough.
Youre no minority! Youre just another man with another onpinion! I personally think john is great. But that is probably because i started listening to him before i listened to the dead. If you are comparing him to jerry, well then yes he is a lot different but not bad!
lose the ego biff.... who would you rather play in the band? john is more than worthy of sharing the stage with bobby, bill, and micky... thats why they chose him
After listening to Mayer butcher the vocals on a lot of Jerry songs, well pretty much all of them, I imagined this one would be in the running for the most cringe worthy of all. To my surprise, it's not nearly as bad. Probably because John's vocal is more subdued. Bobby singing Jerry tunes doesn't do much for me either. Or Phil singing them for that matter. Alright, send all the hate my way for expressing my opinion for the music I love. Tell me it's my loss and I have no idea what I'm missing out on.
One year later: how dare you express your opinion in this free market of ideas, you poor miserable fool. Your loss, you don’t know what your missing. There, I say what I need to say... say what I need to say

Couldn’t have imagined a better voice to pay tribute to this classic
In the original key and everything. Mayer kicks ass.
I saw Trey with the Dead last summer and I prefer John. His vocals are better.

I was at the Gorge show over the summer and it was incredible. Mayer shredding during Hell in a Bucket.

You. You get it.
Christopher Hazard Yes... Please turn the Hammond up
Couldn't have conveyed this message better myself, very well thought out. keep it up JM, I'm glad I've discovered more of your music through all you've done with D&C!
Christopher Hazard AGREED
you probably dogged on him when they first started touring.... the irony...
The man channels Jerry's musical spirit like no other.
Johns voice sounds so good on this
spectacular
I could die happily to this song. You can't have any negative emotions lsiienting to this. I struggle with depression, and I can say this confidently. I actauly believe you relate and identify with this song even more having gone through trauma.
You can just tell how much John loves this music

I remember watching this live, blew my mind.
my niece died lastnight and this song is really getting me through
Stephen Griffin 😨 condolences
This has always been one of my favorite songs for many years. I don’t think anyone can do it better then Jerry, but at least people are hearing the songs.
Giant thumbs up to John Mayer! Thanks to all the guys for keeping the band going-- and finding John to help make this music reach the spheres
My weekly medicine. Mayer's amazing.
Such a beautiful/cathartic song about death. It's gotten me through too many to go on about. Makes it both acceptable and beautiful. Just brilliant.
thanks lacy nice description.... much love
It's a though Mayer has always been in this band and singing and playing these songs especially this one. Scary and magical at the same time
It’s crazy listening to them play this tonight (6-25-22) came a long way! I love these guys more than words can tell!
best of all they aren't trying to mimic the Grateful Dead, they are doing the songs their own way
John Mayer? With former Dead band members? Who would have thought? Keep it up, people. “Sometimes you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right” /|\
This really touch deep in my soul... It's hard to describe...
Its supposed to do that 🤘🏻
mayer is so good
This will be the closing hymn at my funeral. I just don't know if the church choir will sing it or if they have a live Dead concert version.
They'll sing anything if you have enough Cash
Love this song!!!!!
John I know the boys love ya you can see it on their faces
hey guys, just so you all know, this is really good
Que coisa maravilhosa..

Nov 7 (11 7) my Birthday Miracle
Just Dead & Company

Use good speakers
Shame The Band never covered this song. Rick Danko or Richard Manuel.
Maybe I'm in the minority here but I just don't like Mayer in this setting. When he goes off into his bluesy riffing it just ruins it.
Youre no minority! Youre just another man with another onpinion! I personally think john is great. But that is probably because i started listening to him before i listened to the dead. If you are comparing him to jerry, well then yes he is a lot different but not bad!
I still don't get the appreciation for Mayer's guitar work. I've seen it fall short too many times.
lose the ego biff.... who would you rather play in the band? john is more than worthy of sharing the stage with bobby, bill, and micky... thats why they chose him
You clearly haven’t done any research...
Lol
You probably liked your own comment too
He's great but it's just so much less interesting without Jerry and Phil

lol... john has buthered all of the lyrics? stop talkin out your ass man... welcome back on the bandwagon
One year later: how dare you express your opinion in this free market of ideas, you poor miserable fool. Your loss, you don’t know what your missing. There, I say what I need to say... say what I need to say
i dont know why people like this band, so boring
I found it really boring
Surement parce que tu as aucune âme.
John is in key I just don't like his singing style it is odd from the from the rest
