Much gratitude to Christian 'Bainn' Briggs for the lovely recording he sent of his Harmonic Shamanic Elk Drum, which I have used with permission for the titles.
Great teaching video! Easy to follow. I used it to birth my first Elk, Shamanic Drum. Thank you Michelle
Really honestly besides a Native Elders drum Making workshop, this is the best one I have ever seen as this method is so clean.
These drums are more than just a drum they have soul, Michele really puts her heart when made them and she really connects with the drums. I received mine today and I felt so connected to it that looked like I was expecting it for my whole life. Great sound, beautiful, great vibe, great experience. Michelle went beyond to satisfy my requests and made me so happy. Thanks Michelle a thousand times.
Thank you & so many blessings!
Thank you for the video!! Made one very nice! 🙏🏼🕉️💖☯️Om Namah Shivaya
It's a joy to watch someone so thoroughly skilled in their craft which makes it look so easy. I know it's not.
I like the harmonic shamanic drum...I used to have a harmonic, demonic shamanic drum but I changed it for the the ironic sonic masonic shamanic version, but now I just switched back cause you are awesome! Thanks for a great video!
One of the best drum making videos I've seen. Simple, smooth and clean.
Thank you so much
BEST VIDEO ON DRUM MAKING!!! Totally on point!!! Thank You!!
A few thousand or more years of honed craft being passed down. I'd imagine it must take some real feel to get the tension proper - taking into consideration the type of skin used, etc. I can see a lot of skill and intuition (ie., maybe trial and error) to make a drum sing its own unique pitch and tone. May be beyond my skill set (or - maybe the spirits will assisting me if my intentions are right :) Making one's own drum of one's own craft/expression seems like an authentic way to help connect in journeying.
Many thanks!
John Hoecker interesting final conclusion, if you make it as the beginning of a part of holy ritual!! :-)
Your a beautiful woman! Thankyou for this gift of knowledge🙏🏼❤️ many blessings to you and your loved ones!!
Clear, honest presentation without any pretention, well done :)
Thank you for the credit of the drum recording, be well guys !
The lacing is cut from the same hide as the head and then stretched. If you are doing this from a full hide, cut out your drum head(s) first, then trim the leftover hide so there are no sharp curves or points. Starting anywhere, cut a strip 1/2" to 1" (depending on the thickness of the hide, wider for thinner hide, narrower for thicker). Follow the edge, spiraling in, until you have cut 21 diameters of your hoop. Stretch the lacing, pulling hard. It is better to break it in this stage than during drum making. When your lacing is stretched and measured, cut it off with a point on the end. Repeat as needed.
Blessings,
Michelle
How many meters of lacing would you need for an 18” drum? Thankyou in advance! Amazing video Thankyou!
@@chloesteens3877 You need 21 diameters of your hoop, so 21 times 18 or 378 inches.
Nicely done
Thanks so much. I really enjoyed making it!
gorgeous tutorial with much spirit, fun, uplift and expanding being more of self..grateful..thank you....this is sweet and smooth energy.
Thank you so much. Great video. I can’t wait to make my own.
Love the background sounds. Nice drum too
Very nice walkthrough! Thanks very much for posting. Of all the various CZcams tutorials I've seen so far, this is the clearest and easiest to follow.
Hmm. ….That’s pretty cool! ✌🏻☺️ Thanks for making the video to show people!
wow beautiful thanks for sharing. hugs
You are absolutely awesome. You should do more & more tutorials!
Thanks, it was fun to make!
very nicely done
I would appreciate if you stated what kind of hide to use or how to treat it before starting to work with it, as well as any other supplies needed.
Worked out like a charm!
Fantastic!
excellent tutorial, thank you
Michelle is the greatest!!!
Wow, thanks, Stormy!
Just got my kit from Centralia Fur and Hide. Soaking it in rn, a beautiful 14 inch drum it'll be :)
Really good vid :) thank you
You need about 20 diameters of your hoop. Blessings!
Michelle at Gaia's Workshop
And when it dries it will tune/tighten automatically
What a lovely video -- thank you for sharing your knowledge..
I'm making a drum on an 18" hoop, and am wondering if you think the 15 holes will still be sufficient on a bigger drum, just with more space between the holes?
Hi there thanks for this great video. I have all the materials except the wooden hoop. Where can I get one? Really appreciate it.
thank youuuu :)))
Nice hand drum making.. Kudoos to you.. :-)
Brill video, how do you know where to set the holes on the skin?
I just realized that the handle wrapping makes a radial pattern of algiz runes
cool
Love it thank you very well done.
Hi we are Manufacturing all kind of drum skins and shaman drums and bags
There's links in the description under the video that work. gaiasworkshop.com.
Hi can't get the website up.fab drum .
How to make the stick that you hit it with?
Hello!
Can you please recommend on where to by the skin and the wooden circle 🙏🏻
I just bought one 15" horse spirit drum from you. I hope you make it yourself since I feel good vie from you. I'll buy a kit to make one myself very soon. Thanks
I *will* be making it for you, I make all our custom drums myself -- Thank you so much & many blessings!
@@gaiasworkshop2944 Thanks a lot
Thank you so much for so clear explanation!! You solve my question about how to get the proper tension in the drum head, but did you strech the hide before the lacing or just wet and tie? Thanks a lot for sharing!! ♥️♥️
I stretch the hide as I make the drum. The balance of the drum depends on the hide being stretched as far as it wants to go without being over stretched. It's a feel.
Gaia's Workshop I ll try to feel!! ;-)
But now looks much easier for me since I got the treated and prepared hide for drum use! Thank you so much!!
You're welcome! Be smooth & firm in your pulling, you'll feel when all the stretch is out. Never force or jerk. Best blessings on your drum making!
@@gaiasworkshop2944 How long is the lace?
@@NamsaHealing 20 x the diameter of the drum
Hello! Thanks a lot for this video. I made my drum and it looks lovely. Now after some days, I realized that in the evening once the air gets colder and more humid the drum buzzes. So you can hear a vibration as if there was something touching the skin, but there ain´t nothing. Do you have any idea why this is or do you know what I could do about it?
You may have a piece of loose hide on the underside of the head, so check for that. Sometimes the head adheres to the hoop or the lacings catch, play the drum around & on the edge of the head and move the lacing around, that may help. You may just have to dry the drum out when it absorbs moisture in the evening, you can do this with a hair dryer or other gentle heat source. Blessings!
How do you know how many holes to put in the hide? And dose the number change for the size of drum hoop? Also do you use rawhide or just skin?
Just posted my first video on CZcams. Let me know what you think...
Gaia's Workshop that was really nice! Thank you for sharing your wonderful work.
What kind of Lace re yu using because I am making a frame drum and am oing to order some lace but don;t know what type.
I would appreciate to know the length of the lacing in regard of the drum diameter. Otherwise it was good. I like simplicity and clarity.
Wonderful. Could you tell me what is the material of the lacing? Is it intestine or something else?
Leather, soaked in water for about a week or so. There's a bunch of tutorials of where to get the materials and how to make the drum with the leather. Dunno which type of leather though
I've heard that it's quite common to use goat skin for drums like this one.
Hello @Gaias Workshop, do you paint bevor or after the drum is finally? I will Paint a wolf. Get it Acryl color? Or must a another Art of color?
Very informative. ..so how long does the string (rawhide) need to be to complete the entire drum???
Thanks so much! You need 20-21 diameters of your hoop (depending on how stretchy your hide is).
Where did you buy the pre made rim or ring or hoop?
Centralia Fur & Hide carries hoops on their website. We make and sell the full kit with everything you need for a drum & beater.
Is leather wet when stretched on wooden ring?
leather is wet, as she says when it drys it will be a drum
Hmm wish you showed us how to make the wood frame
Dear Gaia! how big the leather should be? what size? :)
It should be big enough to fold over your hoop. I use the hoop as a guide to trace the circle onto the rawhide with a sharp object, adding the height of the hoop + 1/2" all around.
which way hide hair up or hide smooth up I forgot ask
The top of the drum is facing down while you're making it, so you want the smooth side down. An easy way to tell is to scratch the hide with your fingernail; the smooth side will hardly mark while the mark will be much more pronounced when you do it on the rough side. Blessings!
Perhaps you want to make some close ups for some more detailed insight of the technique so people can see better how to do it? Sincere Thank you for this video. Frank Voesten.
How long do you soak the hide?
It depends on the hide, but at least 8 hours and possibly overnight, but not longer than a couple days as it will start to break down.
@@gaiasworkshop2944 Thank you, good to know🌙✨☀️
How do you place the fifteen holes?
I start by folding the head into an equalateral triangle & punch the three corners, then punch four evenly spaced holes between each one.
@@gaiasworkshop2944 Oh thank you!
What materials did you use?
The drum is deer, the hoop is cedar
Si puo usare anche pelle artificiale?
No, it doesn't have the same qualities of stretching & tightening.
What is the length and width of the lace?
The lacing is cut from the same hide as the head and then stretched. If you are doing this from a full hide, cut out your drum head(s) first, then trim the leftover hide so there are no sharp curves or points. Starting anywhere, cut a strip 1/2" to 1" (depending on the thickness of the hide, wider for thinner hide, narrower for thicker). Follow the edge, spiraling in, until you have cut 21 diameters of your hoop. Stretch the lacing, pulling hard. It is better to break it in this stage than during drum making.
Hi do you make drums and sale them ?
Yes, I have an etsy store www.etsy.com/shop/GaiasWorkshopDrums and a retail shop in Gresham, Oregon.
i cant find how to make the hoop !!
You can buy the hoop, making hoops is an entirely different craft. Or look into steam bending.
@@gaiasworkshop2944 OK. WHEN I MAKE A HOMEMADE DRUM I WANT IT ALL TO BE HANDMADE. NOT JUST STRETCHING A SKIN OVER A FACTORY MADE HOOP, BUT TY
After watching daf videos, I think this lacks chains.
Can you use something other than animal skin, for those of us who are vegan?
Stephanie Gilley You can use anything that makes noise to make a drum. Remo makes a plastic drum that sounds ok. However, I cannot recommend working with a plastic drum, made from oil, because any life that existed 65 million years ago is long gone and all that is left is death. I work with the animal and plant spirits to bring life from death, and I believe that they are both equally deserving of respect. I am experimenting with making drum heads from kombucha mothers, but this far they are not cohesive enough to serve as a drum head.
How Long is your Line🤭
It's 20 times the diameter of your hoop. Blessings!
Can you do this out hide? Can you make it animal free? Not you but how can I?
Not that I know of. Good luck, though.
@@gaiasworkshop2944 thanks 😊 it was beautiful watching it
This is how to skin a drum ,, not making .. Then you would of started by what wood to use , how the ring is made , what hide would be the best to use and what section of the hide would be best , using fresh hide or dry hide ect ect ,,
well done on the skinning .......
Jesus loves u
I just wish it was made with something other than an animal’s skin…😢
