    Welcome! Today we’ll be taking a close look at the action on the Roland GP-3.
    Roland has been vague about the action they’ve included in the GP3, but we were able to confirm that it is in fact their solid PHA4 action.
    The PHA4 is considered one of the best plastic key actions on the market, and can be found through much of Roland’s lineup. It’s on the heavier side overall, pretty much in line with an acoustic baby grand action.
    It’s equipped with triple sensor detection, escapement/let-off and textured keytops, all very welcome specs.
    Thanks for watching!

    At this price point, Roland should have put the best action in this piano. Great review Stu (like aways)!

      This digital piano is an overpriced piece of furniture for those who know nothing and do not want to learn anything about digital pianos.

      Hi there! Thanks for tuning in! I think what some people are forgetting are the costs involved in manufacturing a contoured grand piano-style cabinet with a polished finish. If you look at the upgrade costs associated with a high-gloss polished finish from virtually any piano manufacturer, it will likely fall into the $1000-1500 range. When you factor that in, I personally feel that the value/quality offering from Roland on the GP3 is quite good.

      Absolutely agree. It is a joke to put plastic PHA-4 action into a $5000 digital piano!

    • @MerriamPianos
      @MerriamPianos  Před rokem

      That would be quite nice of course! But, with that said, it would inevitably raise the price of the GP3 and GP6 models quite significantly. I think Roland is attempting to make a digital grand accessible to as many customers as possible across as many price points as possible. Plus, the PHA4 is still a wonderfully rewarding action to play! :)

    I looks like Roland renamed their actions. So it looks like it´s an improved PHA-4 with new sensors. Wonder if it is just that that changed.

    • @MerriamPianos
      @MerriamPianos  Před 9 měsíci

      I believe the sensor system is the primary improvement with the new action designs. With that said, it is quite meaningful! The tracking of even the most nuanced and delicate articulations is quite impressive!

    Thanks Stu for the great vid, many people have been wondering about the action and now we know. Still a bit disappointing, I wouldn't have expected anything less than Roland's Grand-Hybrid for this price range, even manufacturing the console takes a big price factor, I hope they do it better with their LX lineup if they ever upgrade it.

    • @MerriamPianos
      @MerriamPianos  Před rokem +1

      You're very welcome! I know a lot of people were expecting a higher-end action. However, when you compare the offering to other digital grand piano models, it is quite impressive what Roland has done. Making a highly-detailed, contoured grand piano cabinet with a polished finish has substantial manufacturing costs associated with it. Furthermore, the PHA4 is still an excellent, responsive action with a great feel. However, at the end of the day, the decision will be dictated by the preferences and needs of the player. Thanks for tuning in and writing in! :)

    PHA-4 Standard is a great playing action, I have no problem with it. But noise could be improved....

    • @MerriamPianos
      @MerriamPianos  Před rokem

      A little bit of noise is a byproduct of a heavier action like the PHA4.

    • @mfurman
      @mfurman Před rokem

      @@MerriamPianos It does not have to be at all. NWX is a heavy action but it is quiet and definitely does not develop the annoying clicking noise of PHA-4

    Hey Stu, do you have any experience with Dexibell? More specifically, the Vivo S1? I'm looking at purchasing one, but there aren't many video's about them except for the brand ambassador talking it up. Sounds like a great keyboard, but the price is pretty steep, and in one of the videos I saw, the key noise seemed to be incredibly loud.

    • @MerriamPianos
      @MerriamPianos  Před rokem +1

      Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! We do not carry Dexibell pianos at this time. While I have played a few models over recent years, I am not particularly familiar with their entire product line. With that said, we appreciate the suggestion and will do our best to cover some of their models in reviews/comparisons if at all possible. :)

    this or Kawai DG 30 ?

    • @MerriamPianos
      @MerriamPianos  Před rokem

      It is a matter of preference really. They are not exactly in the same price category though. The DG30 is more fully-loaded in terms of features and sounds, but it is also more expensive.

  • @mfurman
    @mfurman Před rokem

    Is Stu really saying that he prefers PHA-4 to PHA50? I am surprised that Stu is excited about using PHA-4 plastic action in a $5000 digital piano.

    • @MerriamPianos
      @MerriamPianos  Před rokem

      Hi! Brent here! In my opinion, the PHA4 is a solid, reliable action that is quite rewarding to play on regardless of its key material. Also, I think many people are forgetting the costs associated with manufacturing a contoured grand piano cabinet with a high-gloss polished finish. A high-gloss polished finish alone will be a $1000-1500 upgrade on a digital piano model from most manufacturers. That combined with the cabinet manufacturing costs, the value offering from Roland is actually quite good here in my opinion.

    • @mfurman
      @mfurman Před rokem +1

      @@MerriamPianos Brent, I was trying to like PHA-4 action for a year or so. I had FP-10, A88 mkII, FP-30X. In each case PHA-4 developed annoying clicking noise after 3-4 months of use. If you check Stu’s videos from last year (or previous), you could hear his explanation of PHA-4 problems and his preference for PHA50.
      Regarding the cost of GP3, especially the cost of the exterior, I may say that spending $5000 for just the esthetic aspects of the digital piano without any concern for its action does not make any sense to me. LX705 is much better than this piano
