I worked as a Camp Counselor for two years at a kid's summer camp on the south shore. Driving, or riding in, the yellow school buses (small size) up from the Bay Area, this stretch indicated that you were THERE. All the while watching the road, trying NOT to gaze for too long at the view (difficult). Followed by driving on some even more treacherous roads all summer but with 20 kids seated behind you. Looking back, I had more responsibility than I knew I was trusted with. Angora Ridge Road, the dirt road up to Angora Lakes (or more often 'Lake Angora) was by far the scariest. Between dodging darting chipmunks, the sun and dust, and hairpin turns that opened up onto sudden precipitous distances down into empty expanses of forest if you misjudged a turn...it was nerve-wracking to say the least.

This was in the beginning of February. December has a lot more snow, take snow chains with you.
