Guys I'm new at chess. Does one really say "en passant!" loudly when playing over the board? For real?
No lol
Yes
Yes, and u must stand up, raise both hands above your head, and thrust your hips into the board
no ahahahahahhha
No you don't. That is just his british humor. :)
"The queen cha cha slides" good one
Glad you’re covering this. Bunch of great games.
A great analysis of a fun game. Thanks as always James.
This is perfect! I’m probably too low rated to really be examining the Sicilian but I don’t really care. The first two variations I really started cracking into are the accelerated dragon and the rossolino with that g6 line. I could spend the next ten years looking at the Sicilian and still never fully understand all the theory and subtle nuances in any given position.
I've only been playing for a year, and I always play the Sicilian.
You should play what you like. I find the Sicilian really fun, and e5 really un-fun.
It's not some scary opening. It just means you'll get both players out of their prep quickly, which I like.
@@giovannitigalo7011 I hear what you’re saying but I think you missed my point. If I’m gonna learn the Sicilian I want to know more about it than just e4 c5. I wanna understand all the intricacies to all the vast amount of different setups and all the different ways white can respond. It’s easy to get blown off the board if you don’t have at least a good understanding of the ideas you’re looking for in each variation.
How does it mean both players will be out of prep? The sicilian is scary because of the many prep and lines...@@giovannitigalo7011
@@mikecroke6078black most often plays the same setup everytime, most people just play the jugoslav variation as white, in which you probably need to know some knowledge when to sacrifice material for counterplay but in general some kind of dragondorf works really well around 2000+
Magnus doing Magnesian things ahah always luv Magnus vs Hikaru its like Goku and Vegeta, darth and luke, by far my fave two chess players, great vid again bro!
Do love the way you describe these games ! Especially the brain farts and Hikaru's Mrs bringing him a lovely bowl of Ramen noodles ! 😂😂 Superb !

Excellent analysis and commentary Epic Chess is the best
The dreaded bathtub!
Sac'ing a bishop for two king-protecting pawns is always good in my book. I wouldn't even call that a sacrifice. Hell, I'll do it for two random pawns sometimes.
Grandmasters usually dont do it, unless they have a strong follow up
the difference here is that you're not magnus
0:14 FHG ?
You found a hidden humor :D
Not claiming to be any strong player, but the knight sac on h3 would have went through my mind same position at chess club night.
Magnus play extraordinary, as well as HN. Met HK one time tournament basement church Tacoma, decades ago.
Nice! Still good
@9:22 after Re8, is that skewering the king or pinning the knight? Or are they both technically correct and can be used interchangeably? Skewer as I understand it means you attack a piece with bishop/rook/queen, then the piece being skewered moves and you eat the piece behind it.
But now that I think about it, is it still a skewer if it's not the king being attacked since they don't have to move, thus it's just a normal attack threat or a pin if they cannot afford to lose the piece being X-rayed behind the pinned piece?
Asking the real important questions here.. hahaha
Yeah, I don't think it's a skewer.
"In chess, a skewer is an attack upon two pieces in a line and is similar to a pin. A skewer is the opposite of a pin; the difference is that in a skewer, the more valuable piece is the one under direct attack and the less valuable piece is behind it."
Ah sorry you’re right I always mix those up, yeah it’s a pin you’re right, almost feels like there should be two types of skewers to me because in either direction I can imagine sticking the pieces on a kebab skewers haha
@@epicchess2021 you're right, there are two types according to the wiki page. Absolute and relative. King vs everything else basically(queen or rook im guessing since they are the only pieces vs more than a rook or bishop that's used to do the skewer, but I guess there's always exceptions based on the position.
"Skewers can be broken down into two types: absolute and relative. In an absolute skewer, the king is in check, therefore the check must be handled (under the rules of chess); whereas in a relative skewer, the pieces involved do not necessarily need to be addressed, but it is generally disadvantageous to not address the skewered piece."
Why on earth the Magnus' shirt at 0:26 changed color in four minutes at 4:37?
I dunno I thought wa same all game maybe he changed it twice ha
He can afford changing shirts 3-5 times for match and clean teeth in between. Good hygienic habits.
I found the RxD2 move that Magnus missed! Allow me to bask a little.
Haha nice
I was hoping the game would continue a bit further. Knowing Magnus, he would have sacked the rook for a knight once his king got the optimal placement. 4 pawns are better than a minor piece. Especially when there is play on both sides of the board against the knight.
I thought he would too he’s confident enough one of those passed pawns would’ve promoted
@michaelmassaro4375 Wouldn't require confidence. That endgame is actually very straightforward and Hikaru wouldn't have any chance of winning. At best, white could draw.
8:10 I saw that tactic straight away, and I'm a potato
Potato 😂
Nice
No, you don't say that. But you say "J'adoube" if you touch a piece without wanting to move it.
Yeah although I’ve always just said ‘adjust’ as opposed to the French way! Just what I learnt and got taught from a young age basically
Hick-Harry (Hikkary / Hikarrie / Hickarrey / High Kari / ..~ ?) .. " H i k a r u " >> = >> H * I * K * A * R * OOOOO ! No?
Sensational? He lost the match. You tripping ⚰️
