      Using shutter priority or what DJI wants to call Manuel mode is no different than using auto mode with exposure compensation. The only advantage to using shutter priority mode is the 180 rule you can obtain exactly the same exposure using either one with proper adjustment on each one.

      @@Dbentzjr I went through an episode a few days ago.. screen went blank, didn't care then it wouldn't come back after 5mins and no sign of the bird flying back ( I was 220m away) turns out it was the app that failed so the link RC -> AC was still up so no fail safe was triggered. I think that's something everyone with a mini should know.
      To resolve it, restart the app or disconnect/reconnect the usb
      And yeah I'm wanting that occusync goodness SOOO much but apparently it's good but not excellent. Anyway there's always someone on the internet that will get better range than you with the same setup 😅

    Keeping a higher altitude will improve your range as well due to the transmission signal not having to contend with obstacles such as trees, buildings and the topography of the area your flying in.

    I bought a pair shortly after I got my Mini and since then I won't fly without them. Most of my range test (unfortunately) have been in an urban environment but until the last firmware update picking channel 165 (FCC version) made a huge difference (now the other channels seem to work about the same). Any day now I should be getting the Yagi style ones in the mail. I hear they work even better. Can't wait for another test.

    What would be the ideal altitude to fly at?
    I know that you'll have to go up occasionally to clear pylons, buildings etc, but roughly what would be considered to be the height at which you would get the best range, great vid.

    • @WW5RM
      @WW5RM Před 3 lety +4

      MAXIMUM! The best signal is always the highest. When it comes to RF height is everything! In Ham Radio we always say.....location, location, location. That is #1 second is height. Normally the best locations have the height.
      So if you want the best range for your drone go to a hill top. Just be mindful of trees. Especially pine trees! For example. Here in East Texas its trees everywhere! I normally fly out of my back yard. Well its just enough safe space in one spot to climb above them and go. That same spot has a straight open shot East where i get the most range. Any where lese its a lot less! Ive seen over 500M with my cheap Eachine EX5 at 390 - 395ft altitude. Drop down and its much less!
      But for best view / video you need to be lower with it. This Eachine EX5 is only 1080P. So do a aerial recon. If you find something worth doing a video move closer so you can drop down and capture it.
      Now i also have a wifi extender which helps a bunch! I flew 1310M with it before i lost video! ( Granted i have it up 50ft hanging from a rope that supports one of my Ham 80M antennas. =] ) Straight East of course through my sweet spot. But im researching if that can even be done with the Mavic Mini or any DJI. So far no luck. All i am seeing is the parabolic or yagi / beam type extenders.
      Plus keep in mind i am in some what of a rich wifi location. All neighbors look like they have wifi. With this extender up 50ft i see so many wifi signals its hard to count them all! LOL
      I logged into my extender and counted them. 40 different wifi signals! On my phone i only see 4. That is excluding my wifi and extender. LOL

  • @christingley7419
    @christingley7419 Před 4 lety +2

    I'm in Canada were the drone laws are more strict now, but even in the US I'm pretty sure the rules state that you have to maintain VLOS(visual line of sight). The mini may be under 250 grams but you are still required to follow most of the same safety rules. So I would be careful about publisizing flying beyond VLOS without the proper people in place to help maintain VLOS. And here in Canada flying directly straight over traffic on a major highway is not allowed either. We can cross a highway but flying straight over and parallel is considered unsafe flying. But again I'm not up on the US regulations. Nice video!

    • @StefanMalloch
      @StefanMalloch  Před 4 lety +1

      Untrue. The only guidelines for flying drones under 250g are Rule 900.06 (General Prohibition)

    • @christingley7419
      @christingley7419 Před 4 lety

      @@StefanMalloch Yes, and flying above 400 feet and out of visual line if sight even with a sub 250 gram drone is still considered reckless and/or negligent. Just because it's less than 250 grams does not mean your aloud to fly above 400 feet or out of VLOS. If your not aloud to do that with a drone above 250 grams I can guarantee your not allowed doing it with a sub 250 gram drone either. Phone the Canadian Aviation department and ask them.

    • @christingley7419
      @christingley7419 Před 4 lety +1

      @@StefanMalloch I'm not trying to be argumentative. It's just that there is a general misconception that if a drone is under 250 grams that none of the rules apply to them. That simply is not the case.

    A word on ND filters; for twenty bucks or less you can buy a meter square of nd gel. That's enough to make a thousand ND filters. ONE ND filter will set you back like $40-80. So that's $40,000-80,000 worth of ND filters if you had of bought the meter square rather than enriching silly companies exploiting price gouging.

      @@lyotoarellano I did have luck with a range extender ($10 on amazon) but you have to point the controller exactly in the direction you're flying and also I would recommend having a reliable cell service for the gps home point. I was able to get about a half mile range. My buddy has the mavic pro (not the pro 2) and his can go almost 2 miles with tree cover. I would have totally paid an extra 200 if I knew I could have gotten that kind of range but I suppose the mini does well if you're just looking to get some beachside pictures or video. in your case I would look into resetting your firmware do it throught you PC or MAC if you can though and if that doesn't work try downgrading the firmware then upgrade it again. I did soume digging and found that the United States models use 5.8 ghz wifi per FCC mandating which cuts down the range significantly compared to the European models that use 2.8ghz wifi.

    500M? WOW i get over 500 with my Eachine EX5! But thats at high altitude. 390ft or so. Height is everything when it comes to RF! In Ham Radio we say....location, location, location! That is #1 but 2nd is height. Normally the best locations are the ones with height or unobstructed view. Not just metal but trees too!
    Always keep in mind anything a full wavelength has a affect on any RF signal. Full wave at 2.4 ghz is 5 inches. Full wave at 5.8ghz is 2 inches!
    Im sure the parabolic help but i am thinking the 2.4ghz yagi / beam type extenders might work best. 2.4ghz has more range normally. Its more.....oh robust. At 5 inch wave length it can penetrate things better than 5.8ghz. The only advantage to 5.8ghz is its bandwidth and less signals to interfere. If i had my choice i would run 433mhz or lower for control and video on 900mhz.
    Oh but always be mindful of restricted air space! DJI app is awesome as it lets you know but many do not! B4UFLY is essential!
    Great video!
