Do Ya Think I'm Sexy? - Bass Cover

- Hello :) This is the transcription I did of the Rod Stewart song "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" that Phil Chen played bass on.
The biggest thing to watch out for is to NOT play the galloping rhythm throughout the song. Give the song some space by only playing 1 and 3 for the Dm and F chords in the chorus. It makes a big difference! :)
- Tune down 20 cents -

Underrated bass line.
Fo sho!
Definitely it’s great
"underrated" ? overrated term and overused.
This bass part requires accuracy, precision and endurance. You nailed it man!
thanks John...cheers! :)
You make it look pretty effortless.
Phil Chin was one awesome bass player. Killer bass line.
Hey Jimmy, nice line he came up with for sure...thanks!
Absolute killer bass line. Owwwww! Another example of how a bass groove makes a song great. The glue that holds it all together.
I hear ya brother ;)
I read somewhere the song almost got thrown away and Phil got actually mad that they didn't like his traditional disco bass line on the tune, and he came up with this throwaway bass line out of frustration and they loved it, song saved!
@@donniecastleman5701I wonder what the original bassline sounded like
This deserves more attention than it already has. This dude is underrated. Good job man 🙌
hey Brandon...thanks very much. Really nice of you to say...cheers! :)
I’ve heard this song thousands of times since I bought the 45 in Junior High School and dozens of covers of the Bass. This is powerful and emotive as the original. I have never heard any better 😮❤❤
Thank you very much! :)
i love this song so much, it feels like it's literally made to highlight the bass playing and i LOVE that!!!
Me too :) Thanks!
I have watched this dozens of times, and I'm slowly learning to play it. This is fabulous! Thanks so much! Fort Myers
that's great! Congratulations :) Keep it up ;)
Probably the greatest disco bass line of all time, I always wanted to learn this, so cool. I had to finally learn it for a band I'm auditioning for today, the play along video made it way easier, great job, thx man!
Very cool. I hope it helps and good luck :)
ABSOLUTELY outrageous. Perfect. Congratulations.

Great bass line
for sure ;)
I think Rod approves, you did great.
thanks very much DG ;)
Can't stand this song but love the bassline! Great work :-)
hehe...thanks ;)
Exquisito ❤
Thank you :)
I have to "cheat" a bit and use my right hand ring finger as well, index on bottom note, ring and middle fingers on the octave notes. Thanks Phil Chen for such an inspiring bass line!
Hey Donnie, I don't think that's cheating. Just a different technique ;) Thanks!
I'm sure this is what he plays when his friends ask him yo drop a funky bass line 🤙
hehe...maybe? :)
Went back to 1978 ......when I was a kid...listening to what was sexy then.....and now....just sexy as ever...Greg thanks for this belter.....
I'm glad you liked it...thanks!
Fantastic, tell us about your jazz bass with no pick guard holes, is it an after market body? It’s killer.
Hi David! Thanks for the comment :) There are holes, I just filled them in with wood filler years and years ago.
I got the bass in 84 and put in some EMG's and a "Bad Ass" bridge on it a couple years later. That's about it...thanks :)
You do like master
hi Kubarian...hehe...thank you :)
Well done! And what a brilliant production, arranging the bass one octave above the synth bass in the chorus. Technically not the hardest disco song to play, but it's all about the groove, and you're doing a great job on that! But are you sure that it's played on a Jazz bass? I think the original bass line sounds more like a P-bass. The J-Bass sounds a bit to full, but maybe it's just (and of course) the mix.
hey Herumusu...thanks for the comment. I only have a jazz bass. I've never had enough cash to buy all the different types of basses ;) Cheers!
why is this so hard!!!!
I'm sorry....I don't know? If I could see you play I'm sure I could offer some tips.
When you're having trouble with a spot, ask yourself two things. Is it the notes or the rhythm?
Notes - Do you know the notes? Names, where they are on the instrument, what chord is being played, what interval?
Rhythms - Do you understand the rhythm? Could you say, sing ot tap it? Could you do it with a metronome?
Take a problem, solution approach. Slow it down, give yourself some time and hopefully have some fun along the way. Hope that helps :)
I’m right there. Not quite though. Thanks for posting!
Keep going! You're welcome :)
I have to learn this song for a gigging band. It is one of the more challenging songs but repetitive
good luck...have fun :)
Are you doing a 3 finger technique? If not are you leading with the index finger on the high string? Maybe my problem is that I'm leading with my middle finger on the high string, then the index finger, then the index finger has to hurry back to the low string.
Hi...thanks for your question. I'm using two fingers and leading with the index. I would find it difficult too if I lead with the middle. Try the index see if that helps? ;) Cheers!
I think I've been trying to play it the same way as you're doing. It looks like you play the low string with your index finger, next with the middle finger on the high string, then the index finger on the high string again, then repeat. More practice! Maybe in a few months I'll have it down...
And I haven't even gotten to trying to make the same type of quick leap from that high G string all the way 3 strings over to the E string as on GQ "Disco Nights". I just use my thumb to play the the first E string note. I'm lazy.
haha...well, it sounds like you know exactly where the problems are...just have to slow it down and get it happening...baby steps ;) Let me ask...could you use the same rhythm but outline the triads of the F Major Scale? If not, try it...it will help ;) Have fun! :)
❤❤❤❤❤
thank you :)
@@BassCovers ❤️
Btw Greg I was inspired by watching d tv wid Lone Ranger n Tonto n where does d Lone Ranger takes his garbage, comprende TO DE DUMP ,TO DE DUMP,TO DE DUMP,TO DE DUMP GET IT, u did a great job lesson please one❤️Phil Chen OD 🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲👍
haha...that's great! I'll say this to myself next time a rhythm like this comes up...it works perfectly! :)
🔥♥️
thanks :)
I was playing it all wrong…thanks for this!
My pleasure...glad it helped...thanks!
Hello Could you give me the sheet music?
Lovely bass line. Jorge Ben Jor's song.
👍
thanks!
?What Bass and string combination are you using here Greg if you don'e mind me asking, you have this really nailed on bro.
Hey Mick, I don't mind at all :) I'm using a '76/'77 Fender Jazz Bass with D'Addario Round Wounds. I hope that helps...thanks :)
@@BassCovers Cheers yes it helps a lot, your sound is something similar I'm after.
next best bass line after YES roundabout...
haha, not sure where it's ranking is, but it is a good line :) Thanks!
What year is that jazz bass? It sounds like a P Bass! Great tone! Good job! Thanks! I'm going to work on this song right now!
Hi there :) Thanks for the comment and question. I think its a 77 or 78 judging by the serial number. Have fun on this one :)
Greg Fairweather
Hey Greg man got a chance to look at some of your other bass tutorials you rock man! Do you take requests? Got a couple of lines that I'm struggling with that I know you could make quick work of! 👍
@@MuammarHamed sure I take requests :) What are you working on? Maybe I can help?
Greg Fairweather
Sorry if the time difference is inconsiderate I'm in California San Diego its 10:15 it's a song by The Whispers entitled it's a love thing
@@MuammarHamed thanks for your consideration. It's early am here, but that's ok. I'm up practicing anyway :) I don't know that song. I'll have a listen and see what I can do ;)
can you do rock with you by michael jackson, please?
thank you for your request. I'll have a listen...thanks :)
Together by Phil Lynott has a super bass line by Jerome Rimson you should have a look at too
@@moloned I'll check it out...thanks!
What exactly do you mean tune down 20 cents? Slightly tuned down for each string?
haha...hi Austin...what "exactly" do I mean? :) Your understanding is correct. Slightly tune down for each string. Find an electronic tuner and you'll see a "0" somewhere (near the center). Moving to the left is tuning down. Moving to the right is tuning up...hope that's "exact" enough for you ;)
Phil chin on bass
It's hard even at 75%, but this will make me hit octaves even if woken up at 3 AM and made to play :D
perfect song to work on your octaves! Good luck and have fun :)
@@BassCovers I'm already at 100% percent, just by doing a single playtrough at the end of my daily practice. I still make a couple mistakes, the tempo is not that perfect, but I'll clear that up in the next few days. Very useful song to learn.
@@AlexandarShmex Good job! Keep it up :)
tune down 20 cents? what does that mean?
Depending on the tuner, that’s almost a quarter step down. -50 cents is a half step. Cheers
it sounds better with that bass B)
thank you :)
Good Job but sound perfecto
thank you :)
who give one minus is huiii;/
I wonder if I can ever play so smoothly, maybe it's too late for me.
I'm a mediocre bassist and I think I'll die mediocre.
Shit, that's sad
Phil chin bassist
yes...that's correct ;)
bass tuning sound flat .3 monotones
nanotones, I mean.
@@liamradimir9066 I don't know what a nanotone is? How many nanotones to a cent?
@@BassCovers lets say its super slightly out of tune but i think it has something to do with the bass' truss rod from the record and your bass' truss rod too. most guitars are unique anyways.
first off.. i love the disclaimer and other copywrite stuff.. Fb has been on my butt for years flagn vids.... ohh well.
WHO ORIGINALLY WROTE THIS HARD ASS LICK OF A TUNE!!! WOW!! I know better to even try that string skipping here....... but i do fingerstyle......IM good on Hot Legs. tho.
