  • In this episode I look at the Folklore and Faeries of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Faeries, magic, witches and spells were a very real part of Elizabethan life, Shakespeare would have been very familiar with all of these things. The fear of the forest too, especially on nights when the veil was thin between the worlds, when magic was most powerful, when anything could happen... and did!
What are the roots in folklore of Oberon and Titania? Who and what is Puck in the Faerie realm? I tell of the folklore behind the names of the four Faerie handmaidens of Titania- Peaseblossom, Mustardseed, Moth and Cobweb. What is the Love in Idleness flower used in the magical spell created by Oberon and why is it such a powerful flower? Changelings... what are they... the Changeling boy gets hardly a mention in the play, but is the cause of all the mayhem?! And there is the beautiful lullaby sang by the Faeries to lull their queen to sleep.

Couple of tiny nitpicks from a Midsummer Night’s fangirl: the changling boy’s mother was a servant of Titania but died in childbirth (no mention of the father), and Oberon 100% intended Titania to fall in love with a beast, saying as much when he squeezed the love juice onto her eyes.
I hate to say it, but the “one day my baby was fine, the next there was something different about him so he must have been replaced with a changling” thing suddenly reminded me of how people talk about their kids exhibiting signs of autism after a vaccination. Wonder if there may be some connection there?

Re Midsummer.... yeah, totally. I was involved with a theatre production of MSND as a costumier donkey's years ago, hence the love of the play, Always love to hear from fellow MSND lovers who can guide me more.
Re autism and changelings... absolutely, and I do touch on this, if not in this episode then in another which talkes about Changelings and our modern understanding. I would also add adult mental health problems also and the swapping of adults. As someone who has Autistic and Aspergers family members I know how the testing of babies as they develop goes... that diagnosis... the life changes. It is tragic that so many youngsters suffered through lack of understanding that these children and adults are perfectly normal, simply differently abled. For parents realising their baby was not developing as other children must have been very frightening and crushing. And sense trying to be made of a situation beyond their control. Utterly tragic. It is widely accepted that the Changeling phenomena was actually a medical reason, but as part of faerie folklore I can't create content that denies this aspect of Faerie lore because it is such a documented part of the lore. But the reality.... yes, a medical issue that led to such heartbreaking happenings for sure
