you have to understand - her father was zeus; his brother is poseidon and the fact that the Moirai (the fates) and Themis (justice) favored zeus. Athena, in her wisdom and anger at the injustice, had no choice but to bless Medusa into becoming a gorgon. This allowed Medusa to fulfill her name "protector" and that she would never be harmed by men ever again.
But again, this is another variant of the myth of medusa.

Let's do this. For reference; I am a classicist. That means studying, researching, and knowing about Greek and Roman mythology is my job. I have a degree in this.
In the original myth; Athena is not mentioned. Our oldest source for Medusa comes from Hesiod. He speaks only of how Medusa was born a gorgon like her sisters. Only unlike her sisters, Medusa was mortal.
Medusa did have a relationship with Poseidon, but it was consensual. They did not sleep together in Athena's temple, but in a meadow. That is it. That is all.
There is no curse, there is no punishment. Poseidon and Medusa were lovers.
The idea that Medusa was beautiful came around 300 BC, and we start to see it in the art around that time; as well as Pindar describing Medusa as "fair cheeked". Which means beautiful.
It is not until 1 AD that Ovid enters the scene. He is a Roman poet, so his mythology is Roman mythology. Not Greek.
Ovid basically stole from Virgil, and completely changed the story and made it into SA, and involved Minerva cursing Medusa into a monster.
The idea that Athena cursed Medusa to protect her has absolutely no basis in the myths. It is a theory that popped up in the 80s and 90s. It is not true in any aspect.
And no, Medusa was never seen as a protector of women. Nor was she a symbol for women's shelters in Ancient Greece. Somebody made that up on tumblr.

Athena tried to take away the men's need to have her, but then they wanted her head. Its LITERALLY addressing the moral 'she was asking for it'

Yes, it is stupid to look at religious texts and decide, 'Mmm, I don't like that. So I'm going to change that around and completely revamp the meaning of it to suit my own personal interests'.
You should really reevaluate yourself if you think someone pointing out that it's absurdly messed up is at all 'puritan' behavior.

If it can make you feel better, she originally wasn’t raped. And she was born a gorgon. This is just a "modern" retelling by Ovid, a Roman Poet.
When Ovid wrote Metamorphoses, he was going through political/social exile. So he was kinda making a social commentary on authority and political leadership, by using the gods as analogies for the ruling class. So he made the gods more cruel than usual and was using them to get a his anti-authority message across.
( edit: not that this version isn’t valid or isn’t Greek mythology. But there’s a difference between stories that were actual part of some spiritual or cultural traditions, and pieces of fiction written for the sake of making fiction. Both are Greek mythology, but it’s not exactly the same imo. That’s why many people say Ovid’s version of the myths isn’t the "true" version.)

There’s actually many different tellings of Medusa’s story in mythology. In the story where she debuted, she was simply an obstacle for the hero Perseus to overcome (he did do by sneaking into her lair as she slept and cutting off her head, kinda anticlimactic tbh) in order to save his mother from King Polydectes. From all that was described of her, she was simply born as a monster along with her two gorgon sisters, she being the only mortal one of the three, she didn’t have much of a backstory to her, just that she killed a ton of people and had gained a horrific reputation. It wasn’t until later that another writer made a backstory for her, telling that she was assaulted by Poseidon in one of Athena’s temples and when she was found suffering Athena transformed her into a Gorgon so that she would never be assaulted by a man again. Then down the line another writer came along and took that fanfic and made their own version where she gets ravaged by Poseidon and Athena is so offended by the act being performed by one of her priestesses in one of her temples that she turns Medusa into a hideous monster as a punishment. Now, technically neither version of her backstory is correct according to the original tellings, HOWEVER… In my opinion, the first version definitely shows a more accurate portrayal of how the Gods were shown to interact with mortals in original myths. Athena in particular has no other myths supporting this cruelty in her character, so the more cannon version to me is the one where she aid’s a woman in being free from men forever (Athena herself was a virgin and swore off ever being with a man so this just makes more sense).
I’m only saying all of this because I saw other people commenting stuff about the Medusa myth so I wanted to help set the record straight. This makeup and cosplay are gorgeous and badass, keep up the good work girly💕☺️

Forgive me for this, i’m not a classicist of any variety, but surely the story of Arachne should qualify as at least a cold if not spiteful and jealous portrayal of Athena? Admittedly the earliest extant telling we have for this myth is via Ovis’ metamorphoses with few-to-no Greek artefacts undisputedly portraying it from before that but i think it’s still worth considering

    • @RedAngelXV
      @RedAngelXV Před 5 měsíci +1

@@cutemess6429 You do have a point. I think it’s somewhat of how you interpret her story though, at least for me it was petty but nowhere near the level of the rest of the gods. To me it read more as Arachne genuinely mocking the gods with her art, and so Athena destroyed it and told her how bad it was for her to do so. Then when Arachne decided she wanted to end her life in her sorrow, Athena stopped her from doing so by transforming her into a spider, giving her life new purpose and meaning. Almost as if telling her that she was born to weave and shouldn’t give it up, but should just find more purpose in it, more meaning than just making it to be pretty or to insult the gods. But it probably was the pettiest thing Athena ever did, I’ll agree on that.🤭

Medusa did not tempt poseidon he wanted her because she was beautiful. She was a priestess of Athena's temple and all of the priestesses had to save themselves, to stay pure and to never be intimate with anyone. Poseidon took medusa on the steps of athena's temple as she cried for athena's help. Because Medusa was no longer pure Athena punished her believing poseidon, and his version of her tempting him. 2 of Athena's other priestesses believed Medusa and stood up for her. No offense, but you really should do some proper research on Greek mythology. Athena wasn't a girls girl, she was a daddy's girl and her daddy was Zeus. She was a tomboy who, by her own admission always favoured men over women. It was Ares that was known to protect women. Despite being the god of blood lust and war, he despized the act of rape, every single relationship he had was consensual. He actually killed Poseidons son after he raped Ares daughter. The Gods even held the first Trial in human history over the matter, where Ares was found justified and annointed protector of women. Even their respective cities reflected this. Athens was more traditional and patriarcle while Sparta respected strong women. Even the Spartan version of Aphrodite, Aphrodite Areia was more badass, similar to Ishtar, Astarte or Freya. Ares was even the progenitor of the Amazons, a whole race of badass warrior women.
      DO YOUR RESEARCH.

I see the story of Athena doing this for Medusa's protection because she couldn't go against Poseidon herself. And honestly, I think it's still messed up. No matter how you spin it, Medusa was turned into a monster after being assaulted by Poseidon. In every version, Medusa still ends up stuck in a cave or a temple, never to look at another being again without them turning to stone. Many walk into her secluded home just to kill her for something she had no choice in becoming. Hated and feared by the world for something the gods did. And in the end, she's killed by Perseus in his "heroic tale", just another monster slain to add to his "glory". It is a cruel and tragic story. Athena did not protect Medusa, she forced her into a secluded life, branding her a monster, and all because she could not harm Poseidon. Who wouldn't be filled with rage by the end?
