Thank you for the lovely vlog. Just a quick note that the word Bengali is the anglicised version of the authentic word Bangali.
21 February the International Mother Language Day by UNESCO is a very special and important date. The declaration of this date came up in tribute to the Language Movement done by the Bangladeshis (then the East Pakistanis).
In 1948, the then Government of Pakistan declared Urdu to be the sole national language of Pakistan, even though Bangla was spoken by the majority of people combining East Pakistan and West Pakistan. The Bengalis of East Pakistan were looked down upon, treated inhumanly and not given their due human rights so they protested, since the majority of the population was from East Pakistan and their mother language was Bangla. They demanded Bangla to be at least one of the national languages in addition to Urdu which was a pretty fair request but the West Pakistani punjabis and pathans were extremely arrogant and did not want to even listen let alone consider the requests of the Bengali majority citizens.
So in order to demolish the protest, the government of Pakistan outlawed public meeting and rallies. As a result the students of the University of Dhaka, with the support of the general public, arranged massive rallies and meetings. On 21 February 1952, Pakistani police opened a brutal fire on rallies. Students Abdus Salam, Abul Barkat, Rafiq Uddin Ahmed, Abdul Jabbar and Shafiur Rahman died and became shaheed (martyrs) with hundreds of others injured. This was a rare and unique incident in history, where people sacrificed their lives for their mother tongue.
Since then, Bangladeshis celebrate the International Mother Language Day as one of their tragic days. The Shaheed Minar, a monument built in memory of the martyrs and its replicas to express their deep sorrow, respect and gratitude to them.
Please visit the national parliament of Bangladesh in Dhaka, it’s a beautiful building with amazing architecture.
    ❤️🇧🇩❤️
