  • The belief that swimming in cold water can improve one’s health is hardly new. For centuries, people from all over the world have reported that immersing themselves in cold water alleviates their pain and improves their overall well-being. But until now, the practice has been treated lightly by the scientific community, the curative effects all but dismissed by doctors seeking medicine-centred solutions for their patients’ illnesses. Expert anaesthetist and researcher Dr Mark Harper joins us to deliver long-awaited evidence that cold-water swimming can, in fact, achieve powerful, tangible health benefits.
Dr Mark Harper is a consultant anaesthetist at Sussex University Hospitals in the UK and Kristiansand in Norway. He is a leading expert in the prevention of hypothermia in surgical patients and the therapeutic uses of cold-water adaptation and open-water swimming. He has been featured in the BBC documentary The Doctor Who Gave Up Drugs, is a cocreator of Chill UK, a nonprofit committed to providing courses in cold-water swimming to improve mental health, and the director of Mental Health Swims. He lives in England and Norway.

I immediately thought of the the twin TV doctor "Chris" when you mentioned cold water.....overcoming depression.... great episode and highly encouraging for a simple solution to this epidemic. Much love. And well done for living out your Hippocratic oath and of course doing service to humanity ❤🎉

I have inflammation in my both hands fingers. It started when I was 13, now I'm 39. I'm in good shape, no overweight but my fingers are very thick, and time after time my rings are too small for me. I don't have rheumatoid arthritis but my last diagnosis is mild arthritis. Joints aren't dislocated. I would love to take a cold shower every day and swim in the ocean year round. Should I try it or is it bad idea and I should avoid cold water at all? Thank you
