Much respect for this show, Tom and taking calls for the better part of two hours. I agree wholeheartedly about resting Rice, Odegaard and Saka against Wolves. We can play Jesus for Saka as he didnt start against Bayern and perhaps play Viera/ESR for Odegaard and Partey for Rice. The bigger picture of Chelsea and Spurs is vital and Wolves aren't in tremendous form. If we manage to win our next three games we hsve a great chance. All it takes is a City draw, not even a loss. Great insight Tom, hope we can bounce back this weekend 👍

Remember we also just had an international break where most of our players sat out of national duties, combine that with the Dubai break and I’d say there’s been plenty of time to refresh. The fact that we aren’t rotating the starting lineup though really baffles me because on paper we look to have the depth to do it

Partey needed to come on for Jorginio. We didn't have much of the ball after his substitution and lost all control in midfield. We have no threat on our left side either because Martinelli is left stranded there. He has no overlapper. Saka has Ben white. I would love us to change it up sometimes and have the rb invert and the lb overlapping.

My friends and this group chat I’m in with some fellow Gooners scoffed at me when we got them in the draw. I said their veteran presence and know how would cancel out whatever poor results they had in their league. After we drew… (at a Gooner only Emirates), I knew they were inevitable.

    • @NakulKrishna
      @NakulKrishna Před měsícem

I don’t think that’s objective enough. Even the media paint this bayern were inevitable narrative with their history in the competition etc. I don’t think that’s what got them through, we were evidently poor and not playing how we have been in 2024. Bayern lost the league and have nothing left to play for. Go through the squad and compare minutes our players have played across the season and compare running distances and presses and you’ll see we are a way more intense side through a season, just ran out of gas when it mattered due to lack of depth. Stop gassing a bayern side that did well to spot our lack of confidence and energy and got one goal better, to seem like they were peppering our goal with high xg chances with inevitability. When you run out of energy you stop playing bravely because you don’t want to chase lost balls. I want to get rid of players like Partey, Eddie, Vieira, Nelson, (zinny Jesus Tomi
longer term) who we just can’t rely upon when it matters because of injury, or just for having the wrong temperament. Our depth cost us as it has every season, a fully fit and firing arsenal smother a fully fit and firing bayern in their current forms. Your friends were right to scoff at bayern, they just forgot we always bottle it in April. Bayern will be out next round.

Had to watch on catchup Tom but as always great content from yourself so thank you
Good stuff input from your callers. Arteta has in my opinion ran some players into the ground which is not dissimilar to what Klopp does with his teams. He’s been unwilling to drop certain players & use his bench more productively & now it’s caught up with him. Also he doesn’t want to use his bench. He reluctance to take havertz/saka/rice off & in the CL not bringing Partey on when Jorginho came off is puzzling 🤨 so his in game management needs to improve going forward. But all being said still think we definitely are progressing in the right direction 👍🏼

I think it's funny that when Arteta signed Jesus and Zinchenko, they were considering our "level up" signings. and they did level us up. but quickly they have been out levelled by the rest of the team and we find ourselves needing to improve most in the 2 positions they play, Up front, and left back

I think last night showed the damaging effect previous results can have on a young Arsenal team from a mental pov. If we didn't concede the way we conceded our goals against Bayern the week before and how we conceded and lost against Villa I am sure we would have been more confident in our approach and would have played our game last night. But I was looking for runs that never happened, players weren't playing on instinct, taking an extra touch, weren't moving as much, misplacing/overhitting passes.
The more experienced teams get over previous bad moments/results quicker, so hoping as we play more at the highest level in CL and PL we can find that mental fortitude to put aside disappointments.
Of course fatigue played a huge part too, so many players lack that sharpness, that yard of pace they had a few months ago. Saka looks so tired, if he was in PES/FIFA his acceleration stats would have gone from 90 down to 80 given how burnt out he looks.
As worrying as the mental side is you can get over things pretty quickly with 1 or 2 good results, but the fatigue is really worrying and at this point in the season as its so difficult to solve.
Just hoping Arteta can do something to raise them for Wolves, its time to try some of the players who aren't getting as much game time, who maybe are a little big fresher and see if any of them are willing to go out and stake their claim in this team.

The players are tired. Arteta only trust a few of them to follow his rigid instructions to the letters, our players are too robotic. While it has largely worked, if it doesn’t, there’s no plan B. Other than my biased desire to see us win, our play style is boring. That U-shaped, timid pass back to defenders style is annoying. I feel players are too scared to express themselves on the pitch. I have noticed that Rice has adjusted to the system too. It’s so uninspiring. Bayern are better, they deserve to win.

There really wasn't much between these two teams across both legs. Those 'Arteta out' callers should rewind 2 weeks and realise how for this young team has come. Don't throw that in bin. These painful lessons often are the seeds of greatness. It's important to keep this young group of players together and surgically fill in the missing gaps in the next transfer window. I would suggest Boniface as a true number 9.
So many good lessons from this game. It's better to concede possession and hang back rather than being the team circulating the ball in harmless areas of the pitch. With fast wingers, you need to create space for them to shine. For instance, Kimmich is not a fast player but Martinelli did not have a single opportunity to exploit his speed advantage.
Bayern were just a touch better at robbing Arsenal of its strengths than the other way around. That decided the tie.

Ever happens to you that you really like a player BUT then everyone starts overrating & worshipping them and you don't like the player anymore without any fault of their own ?
Happened to me with Haaland last season- now everyone's gone too far the other way with him, almost underrating him.
    Happening with Odegaard this season.
Brilliant captain, excellent workrate, excellent at retaining possession, press resistant- Best captain we have had in 20 years imo.
BUT HE IS NOT ELITE like fans make him to be.
He's an #8 who can't carry the ball upfield like a Frenkie or Bernardo.
    He's a #10 who doesn't have the passing range/final ball/ball striking of a KDB, Bruno, Trent etc.
Before anybody throws 'chance creation' stats at Me, most of them are a case of 'Quantity not Quality'. Apart from the slide through pass which he does on a few occasions to the LW(which Xhaka could do as well if not better) what unstoppable quality does he give in the final 1/3rd ? Scoring cutbacks ?
You pray for cutbacks when you're out on the field with your mates because they are one of the easiest goals to score.
Very one footed. Doesn't overlap at all because of it.
Or make many off the ball runs which results in Saka having to 1v2 every game unless Ben White busts his arse to take away 1 defender.
Yes, the LB & FW positions are obvious opportunities to improve. EVERYONE can see that.
But the fans have little clue of how much we can improve just by making sure we play a midfield trio of:
    Rice
An #8 who can carry, break lines, defend(literally Partey but no point talking about a player who never plays)
And a dynamic #10 who has the vision & ball striking to open up teams at will.
Odegaard is VERY GOOD. But he's not ELITE. And where we want to go, you need ELITES.
He can't be in the starting XI in 2025 if we want to be the best team in the world.
There are worse players in the squad ofcourse. But those are too obvious. He is the one Arteta needs to show courage to move on from- especially since he's the Captain.
