@@F1rstWorldNomaD My only problem is that Zack misses the point of a few parts of the comic and underestimates the audience. The end result is that a few characters end up looking stupid and some lines just don't work in the new context. It's still a good movie, but those parts lessen it for me a bit. The squid was probably a good thing to cut, but there were a number of other things he changed that changed meanings of other scenes.

This cut with the black freighter garbage is the worst cut of all. The directors cut is the best of them all by far, the theatrical cut is acceptable due to run time logistics, the ultimate cut with the pirate garbage was just he studio trying to recoup the major loss they took when they stupidly paid someone to animate all the pirate crap that everybody stopped reading in the comics after 2 issues. The studio loved the sales they got of the directors cut and commissioned the animation. Nobody bought it. So they bundled it with the theatrical cut and hosed the audience into buying the movie a third time. Luckily most people saw thru this cash grab and skipped the black freighter.

    1. Ozimandias is to this day the only antagonist in any movie to have won before the "final battle" even began
    2. In the comics, Ozimandias engineered a fake alien invasion instead of blaming Manhattan. This version works better in my opinion, since the world alredy feared him.
    3. Note that Rorschach took off his mask before Manhattan killed him. He knew that while *he* would die, the symbol wouldn't.
    4. I *love* how you caught on to the whole point of the ending. The story asks whether YOU would preserve world peace even if yoi knew it was built on a lie and millions of deaths or if you would destroy the world in an effort to preserve a semblance of morality.
    Fun fact:
In the comics Ozimandias yells *"I did it!"* over his planning succeeding while an image of Alexander The Great cutting the Gordian Knot is right behind him.
A literal and figurative representation of an ambitious man solving a complicated problem with brute force.

I don't think it was the power so much as it was seeing and experiencing every moment of his life, past, present, and future, simultaneously. Imagine trying to live like that. After a short while it would undoubtedly feel like you were just a puppet, as was everyone else, acting out a predetermined script and that nothing anyone did actually mattered... everything ends... everyone eventually dies... free will is an illusion... and you know how everything is going to turn out so you're just going through the motions. Of course, you already saw yourself getting like this, and feeling this way, so, that, too, is just going through the motions... I myself already understand that free will is completely illusory and that all of us only make the only decisions that we are capable of making in the moment... but... without being able to see the future we can at least make ourselves *feel* like our choices matter and are our own to make. Dr. Manhattan cannot.

The Russian "soviet era freedom of information act" has proven 90% of the student protests were secretly being financed and plotted by the KGB. Same with the civil rights protests(they were blackmailing MLK by threatening to show his wife all hose pictures their agents took of him and all those naked white women in all those hotel rooms while he was on the road preaching). The soviets did everything they could do to turn off the American Melting Pot. McCarthy was right about 95% of the names on his report on unamerican activities. Moore was on the wrong side of history, that is why he became enraged when he found out the fans saw Rorschach as the hero of Watchmen when Alan thought Ozymandias was the good guy.

It's to show his respect for science, and to also possibly to create fear in America's enemies by reminding them they have nuclear power.

That Rorschach background is most totally cool thing I've seen a reactor have as background. It's so cool looking. And having it there makes this movie watch along feel like it's a Rorschach movie mostly. 🎬
By the way I prefer nukes it all.

It is great to see you react to this movie. Such a great one and very thought provoking. I really liked that it is told as a mystery. How they weaved every character's origin story without missing a beat of solving the mystery, incredible! Rorschach's unrelenting investigation to exact justice ruins the smartest man on the planet's plan to murder millions to achieve world peace is great storytelling, right down to Manhattan having to kill him because he sees things in only black or right (wrong and right) was necessary to keep the peace the devastation caused. Also the sound track and opening credits scenes were awesome.

This movie man. I absolutely ADORED this movie, but I didn't realize I had the directors cut when I first watched it. There was a sex scene up in the Watchmen ship, and I was like "man this is pretty late development for a sex scene this late in the movie, it must be almost over..." I WAS HALFWAY IN LIKE 1.7 HOURS IN LOOOOL. I was like Jesus Christ I was not ready for this

Still one of the best “superhero” movies ever made.

  • @nooneofconsequence1251
    @nooneofconsequence1251 Před 6 dny +1

I love the opening montage so much; good example of what I was saying about there being a rich milieu and so much packed in to every scene, and if you pay close attention it sets up the world of Watchmen very well and this alternate history where costumed vigilantes actually exist (but mostly without any super powers).
3:14 you see the original Nite Owl (probably at least in part inspired by Batman) socking a criminal in the face. In the background you see Batman posters on the wall, showing both that this is the 1940s and also that Batman is a fictional character in this universe... to the left are Thomas and Martha Wayne exiting a theater... presumably not shot dead in this world because Nite Owl was there to punch out the robber that was going to kill them.
3:29 right after this shot there is another (not in the reaction) of the Enola Gay (the plane that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima) flying over its target, but in this version of history it looks like the plane has been dubbed the Miss Jupiter (OG Silk Spectre) instead.
3:33 this is the V-J Day celebration in New York City at the end of World War II. Alfred Eisenstaedt took a very, very famous photograph of this celebration, of a young sailor returning home and kissing a nurse in the middle of the street. You can see Eisenstaedt on the left of the frame, taking his photo, and the sailor that was in the original photo walking by smiling broadly, but the nurse who was kissed by him is instead kissed by lesbian crime fighter Silhouette.
3:36 this scene of Miss Jupiter retiring after becoming pregnant is obviously an homage to the painting The Last Supper by Leonardo DaVinci
(some scenes missing) ... Dollar Bill gunned down with his cape stuck in a revolving door.. I feel like there is a similar famous photo of some mobster gunned down in a similar situation this is a reference to, but if so, I couldn't find it. Mothman getting hauled off to the insane asylum always makes me think of Arthur from The Tick. We see Silhouette and the nurse from the famous photograph in bed together, murdered, presumably in a vicious hate crime. And we see young Rorschach in the hall outside of a room where his mother is whoring herself.
3:42 yep that's Dr. Manhattan, shaking hands with President Kennedy.
3:46 the assassination of JFK in Dallas. (stupid) Conspiracy theorists talk about hearing shots coming from in front of Kennedy on "the grassy knoll," and seeing a puff of smoke rising from there (as from a gunshot). In this take on alternate history, we see that it was actually the Comedian who shot JFK, and the puff of smoke was from his cigar, not his gun. He is dressed the same as the men known as "the three tramps" who were among those arrested by police that day in the confusion after the shooting.
3:49 this is during the Vietnam War protests... there is a famous similar photograph I see variously credited to Elliott Erwitt or Marc Riboud... but the aftermath of that photo being taken, which I think was during a peace march in Washington DC, there was no shooting. I guess in the Watchmen world things may have ended more violently under an emboldened Nixon? Because the guns fired I originally thought this was supposed to be a reference to the Kent State massacre which happened around the same time.
3:53 this is famous painter Andy Warhol, the guy who got famous painting soup cans... he also painted a famous portrait of Marilyn Monroe similar to the one here he did of the 2nd Nite Owl.
3:55 Dr. Manhattan on the moon.. I guess getting there was much easier for him than it was for NASA. Neil Armstrong here says "Good luck, Mr. Gorsky" which is in reference to an urban myth that Armstrong's neighbor Mrs. Gorsky said she'd give her husband oral if the kid next door ever walked on the moon.
3:59 Superhero Ozymandias standing outside famous nightclub Studio 54, alongside Mick Jagger, David Bowie, and the Village People...
4:05 and here we see a shot showing how masked vigilantes were becoming less popular, leading to the eventual law that banned them..
So much world building and back story in one short sequence... and I'm sure I missed several things...
