Lung transplants should not be given to those who damaged their lungs from smoking. They should be saved for those who have pre-existing conditions such as cystic fibrosis. I received the help of an almost identically structured process, including transplant teams and life long post operative followup for my transplant in New Zealand.
I'm so thankful to live in a country that also has a functioning public health system.
Richard: I'm glad you mentioned the life-long follow-up. Unlike most surgery, organ transplants require you to take medications to prevent rejection of the organ and prevent infections for the rest of your life. These medications require monitoring and adjustment, so contact with your healthcare team is an essential part of daily life after a transplant.
