  • In this video, we take a look at this famous proof of Pythagoras theorem by the 20th President of the United States, James A Garfield. Since little to no words are required for the proof, it qualifies the video to be in this proof without words series.
Again, we will see how the powerful method of 'counting in two ways' is used for the proof, and perhaps by doing so, we can gain an appreciation for this beautiful technique.
Diagrams are taken from 'Proofs Without Words- Exercises in Visual Thinking' by Roger Nelson of Mathematical Association of America.
    ABOUT PYTHAGORAS THEOREM:
Arguably one of the most famous theorems in the world, which says that the squares of lengths of two sides of a triangle add up to the square of the hypotenuse. More than 360 proofs of Pythagoras theorem are currently known, making it one of the theorems with most proofs.

Really nice, but this is infact identical to the standard proof with the diagram halfed ( original proof uses 2 more copies of the original triangle, creating a side-c square inside a side-(a+b) square, and counting areas is easy )
