*CORRECTION: at the 9:30 mark I mentioned my Tenkara rod weighs 21 oz which is incorrect, the actual weight is 2.1 oz.*

I was recently asked to do a video about the gear I carry in my topper for full-time summer truck camping in the high country of Central Colorado so I shot this two days ago and wanted to share it with everyone. I prefer a more minimalist set up so this is pretty bare bones. I don't show my clothes since that's boring - just shirts, pants and socks. Thanks for watching!
i really love the fact that you are a nostalgic minimalist - your cooking set, grandfather's plate etc.
Thanks! I love vintage gear items and having a connection to these items makes them that much more valuable too me. Happy New Year, wishing you the best in 2018!!
This was fun to watch. Like opening Christmas presents.....I'm headed for the Sierra Nevada in a week for a month in my 4x4 Explorer. My first solo trip other than trying out everything on a 9 day trip in a regular campground. I sleep in my SUV. Has blackout insulating curtains. Everything has a place and basic set up. Took thought and some months of planning. I loved that water filter you saved for last. I'm headed over to another tab to look that up. Great video!
Great video, it's VERY cool of you to share your experience and the many lessons learned by being out there. I also want to give you props for speaking clearly and making sure you can be understood, so many folks shoot outdoors and take zero account of the wind. Well done.
Just shared this with my girl, we have a Tacoma and have been planning to take a year off and live out of it when my army life is over. I loved how you went into the tools, you never know when a tool is going to be needed.
i guess Im asking randomly but does any of you know a trick to get back into an Instagram account?
I was stupid lost the account password. I would appreciate any tips you can give me!
@Chance Trace instablaster ;)
@Judson Braylen thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site thru google and I'm trying it out atm.
I see it takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Thank you for sharing! I'm starting to take longer trips in my tacoma with a new shell. Your videos are motivating with priceless info. Thanks again!
"I don't really use the road shower to shower. I go to the gym quite often." Love it.
Thanks so much. Good thing you got that little brush to keep the place clean.
For your cooler, get a 12v/110v model and keep it up front and you can crarge it right off a cigarette outlet or a 110 if you pull into a campground or a friends driveway. For your fly fishing setup, keep an eye out for Eagle Claw 5 piece rods, they usually come with an aluminum case. The nice thing about that rod is the bottom section can go on one way and it can be used as a fly rod, flip it 180 and you can use it with a baitcaster reel. Quality rod too. I've got 3 or 4 of them and when I was in the Air Force in Alaska and flying out to remote sites, that rod put a lot of trout in my frying pan..
Could the rod be used with a spinning reel?
Always enjoy watching your videos, always informative and perfect for budget minded outdoorsy people. Keep up the good work!
Excellent setup! Love the cast iron setup. I have a skillet but I've been looking to get a dutch oven. Gonna get your setup instead with having the ability of having two pans or using it as an oven. Thanks for the tip, love the channel.
So nice to know people like you exist and take the trouble to share your tips and knowledge. Love you old dishes.
Fantastic video!! Well made and very informative, thanks for sharing your approach!
Thanks for that video. I haven't camped since the 80's, now retired gonna car camp out of my SUV, need to start over again with equipment. That was helpful. I will use your Amazon link when I can as a thank you for the tips.
Well... I do have ONE thing... The same Coffee Pot... YEAH
Hey, Thanks for your videos. I am just setting my first truck camper and you have been very
helpful. About the surplus shovel. You are right. Those are indestructible.
I remember as a kid back in the 70's in California, there were REAL military surplus stores.
I would get a shovel, someone would steal it, buy another ect. Regards from Ody Slim
Put a cooler inside of another cooler. The space in between the two can be used for other food storage. The ice on the inside cooler will last longer. When 4wd camping we would tie the coolers into place under the vehicles so that the critters couldn't get to them easy.
I really hope you see this message. HIGHLY recommend investing in “Silky pocketboy” foldable hand saw. It works so incredibly well that I’m able to rid of my hatchets & normal saws. Thanks for this video! Enjoy.
I plan on doing this, i leave in March 2019. I hope I can run into you sometime. Your one amazing guy brother
I am from Oklahoma and I live in my Tacoma in Glenwood Springs .. Lived in Aspen since 96. ❤
That roll up table is really nice. I had one and it was the best I've ever seen for stability, strength, compactness and weight.
You and Brian "made my day" with your comment about the Camp Time(r) Roll-a-Table. It has been our baby for 35 years now, and its virtually the same design since 1982...So, when I go to work tomorrow ( Sunday), to fix the machine that makes the side-bars for Roll-a-Table, I'll go to work with a smile on my face. Thank you very much ! CampTimeDave in Spokane Valley WA.
ive watched several camping videos and I truly enjoy yours, you give a thorough description and what to use items for is helpful to me as well. I have seen in almost all the camping videos where people are having power inverters, some ive even seen with its own fuse box in the back end, I would really appreciate if you would do a video on the power inverters and how to attach them to the truck or suggest where I can find more info or tutorials on how to do that. Thanx
Hey Mary! Will do, I'll start thinking of a video I can do to highlight how I use the inverter. Oh, and sorry for the delayed response as I just now saw your comment. Happy New Year!
You gave me some good ideas about what to carry in my truck and Jeep
Good schtuff. I have a similar setup but one thing I have is a roll of heavy duty aluminum foil. Also, a mini-hammock (Gear Hammock) which I find useful as a sort of hanging drain for washed dishes to drip dry in. and a cheap plastic bin to wash them in. Thanks!
They make a nice American Made long term cooler at Wall Mart. I bought the 55 for under $100 and it keeps ice for 7-10 days and certified bear proof.
good stuff. loved seeing your dog in the back round. love the plate!
Dogfencepa thanks! Sierra is such a great travel companion :)
amazingly optimized setup, love it
Thank you!
Great video with many awesome ideas. Love your dog video bombing in the background in that one spot. lol Cute.
Love that old plate!!! Breakin bread with Gramps everyday.
Im picking up pop-up truck camper today....really excited about the adventure to come.
Thanks for sharing, brother 👍👍
Brian thank you for this video. I learned new things. 😊
Always enjoy your vids! Keep up the good work man cheeers!
Happy New Year, Connor!
I got a battery from battery plus that’s a combination of starter and deep cell battery that’s around 100 amp hrs. I run my arb frig. (52 qt) off it that’s in my access cab. Seems to work well if you are driving enough . Frig. has low battery shutoff so you don’t drain the battery. Thinking about getting solar and use it to charge the battery also if sitting. Enjoy your videos.
Great video, great information. Thanks.
Good stuff. Grandpa's plate was my favorite.
Good video, I enjoyed it. By the way, I believe the tool you were not sure about was a chainsaw adjustment multi-tool.
Some friends and I are heading out on a 3 week trip through co, wy, and mt this Saturday. Your videos are a great help! If you see 2 3rd gen 4runners following you in Buena Vista, it's just me haha. Would be cool to run into you out there
Nice load out. Subscribed.
Amazing tons of tips out of experience...I really wish you have a website. I watched the video about why you're doing this, I think you can lead the way for other that would like to take the same path.
Thanks - this was very helpful (I took notes!)
You bet, I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
CS - I didn’t either of those because I don’t use them.
Happy new Year. Thanks for the response
Happy New Year!
Nice video! You seem well prepared!!
Wasp spray works quite well against bears and 2 legged critters shoots far and pretty cheap
You obviously have devoted a great deal of research and though to selecting your gear. Thank for the inspiration. Do you have a video showing how you set up the tarp?
Another great video! I thought I was the only one who brought a small fan.
The small fan is so key, especially in the summer months! I don't know what I'd do without it.
Just part way in vid I have a similar set up. I want some 6 volt batteries to run a small freezer. I figure I can make ice or enough ice packs to cool my cooler, that way I'm getting fridge and freezer and only powering one.
Ever look at USA made canvas tents? Not ultra light but thankfully you have a truck to carry it. I have a kodiak that i haul in my topper truck for camping. Thanks for the vid 👍🏻
Man, love your videos will follow and subs.
Thanks Don, have a Happy New Year!
You've given me some great ideas. Thanks. I wish you had mentioned the name brand of the tarp. I couldn't quite make it out when you held it up and I'm looking for some type of tarp system. Thanks again!
You inspired me to sell my 32 ft camper and my 21 ft pop up. Just my wife and I and one 16 yrs old who can sleep in a tent. Love my new life.
That's awesome, Shawn!
PaintThis! I really wonder what the 16 year old thinks about all this? Really? Or REALLY!?
Jim Rivera Who fucking cares. He's under my roof. He wants a better roof of his own there's always a great starting point at McDonald's.
Deez Nutz c so PaintThis's son lives with you?? That's odd.
@@deeznutz2646 yeah i bet he asked to be brought into this world by some dumbass who forces him to do whatever.
You have one of the best channels also primal outdoors has a good channel.
Lots of questions lol. Love it.... ok where is Sierra when you're @ the gym? 😁👍
notice you damaged the bin. i am in australia. lots of corrugated rds that smash bins (cars cans and jars) to pieces. i line my bins with cardboard and pack tight. seems to work well. less movement less damage. :)
I ended up getting the teton tent cot, it's a awesome tent. However I'm currently looking at the snugpack 3 tent.
The best cool boxes are the old colemans i have an old 1980s one absolutely fucking solid keeps thing frozen for two weeks,
Great video i subscribed
Really nice basic setup!
Thank you!
Always enjoy your videos.
Thank you for tuning in! Merry Christmas ~ Brian
@@OffGridBackcountryAdventures hope you had a great Christmas in no doubt some stunningly beautiful part of the USA. What a wonderful life for your gorgeous dog!
Good watch thanks
really enjoying the channel
Do you recommend that rain / field jacket ?
Fantastic video Brian, my wife and I enjoy beach camping on padre island national seashore. Can u do a video on food storage, and your camp shower. Im thinking abour making my own. Also, since we beach camp, whats your opinion on the tent cots out on the market. The reason we're thinking of tent cot is to limit the amount of sand that tracks in. Need some advice bro. Thanks
Hey Albert! Thanks for the comment and I apologize for such a delayed response as I'm just now seeing your questions. To be honest, I don't have too much experience with tent cots. I use a full size cot for my winter camping which I purchased at Cabela's but it's really big and heavy, not ideal for tent camping on the beach. I've heard good things about the Helinox Cot but it's pretty pricey - around $250.00. I apologize for not having more info on those products. I'll do a video on food storage and the camp shower as soon as the weather starts to warm up here in Colorado. Currently it's pretty cold at the cabin so I'm staying indoors this winter and plan to start full time truck camping again by mid Feb or early March. I'll be certain to dial in a video so be on the lookout for it in two months. Have a Happy New Year's Eve, 2018 is going to be a great year!
About the bear spray/self defense thing:
Have you been in situations where this is necessary? Riff raff encounters?
Love your videos!! Could you show how you set up your mosquito netting
Thanks Tom! Yes, I'll shoot a video this week to show how I set up my mosquito netting. Thanks for the idea for a new video!
Thanks for this video. I just built a full bed in the back of my dodge dakota so that my girlfriend could go with me at times.
Right on, sounds like you have some truck camping adventures on the horizon!
Thank you for the insightful videos. By the way, you are always wearing this Patagonia jacket, which model is it? Thanks!
Down sized 6 times....real world experience. Thanks.
I am kind of a "knife" guy. I always go into the woods knife heavy. I was really hoping to see some knives in all that gear.
2023 here 🎉
Iv watched a bunch of your vids today and I'm a new subscriber. Im really digging the vids but curious. You've mentioned bear spray in multiple videos but so far I haven't heard any mention of a gun for self defense?
Your Yoga mat has a 2nd use and that to roll out and put on the ground when you need to work underneath your truck.. Keeps you clean and sharp pointy rocks out of your backside..
Wondering if you would do an updated video like this. I see your setup has changed since this video was made so I imagine your load out has changed aswell.
Hi E Patters, that's a great idea. I've not done an update video in a while. I'll get that shot right after all this rain passes. Currently camping outside of Strawberry, AZ. Great terrain around these parts! ~ Brian
also let us know what kind of new tent you get if or when you get one
Will do :)
Great vid! I'm pretty sure that your "unknown" wrench is for a chainsaw.
Some items redundant? But yeah!
Great video where did you purchase mosquito net?
Do you have a video on the mosquito net set up?
Since Yeti wasn't the first roto molded cooler it's hard to call other roto molded coolers "knock off's". I've had several Yetis and never got 10-12 days of ice from one. Engel works better for me.
Great videos ! ...can I ask what brand fan that was that you had ? with the clip ? thanks !
👌Good camping
Quick question what rear leaf springs are you running (dakar?) and overload springs and would you change your set up and how
Did the thief steal your Yeti from your truck? As far as the Tent goes check out the Nemo Hornet 2P. its a great tent and lightweight
What sleeping bag are u using
Hello just wondering where you got your fishing pouch??
How do you lock the door when your sleeping?
What do you use for heat in the winter?
Question: how do I really go about all of this? I have 6 months to prepare for this! So I truly need to know the ins and outs of of truck camping. What do I need to know? Please and thank you.
I'm heading to Denver in two weeks. Can you recommend a camping area? I have a ford transit connect and a dog. Thank you.
How does one go about getting a job in trail maintenance?
out of curiosity what is your source of income that allows you to camp this much?
I am looking for a tent that will encapsulate the back end of the pickup. Does anyone have any suggestions? SU tents are too short.
You said everything has a purpose. So I was wondering what you use the hack saw for mostly?
Hey Kelly, I use the hacksaw to help cutting through any metal or tough plastics that my knives can't get through. For example, I made some modifications to my fender flairs and used the hack saw to trim the areas which weren't needed. I've also used it to cut through pad locks on gates that were illegally closed on Forest Service roads. Sometimes we have misguided people who put up gates on public roads and think they can close off access. The Forest Service has give us approval during our trail maintenance patrols to take these gates down so the hack saw helps expedite that process. Happy New Year and I apologize for such a late reply!
hey bryan, i hope this is not a dumb question, but doesn't your truck need to be running to use your inverter?
Hey Mr Waynes! Not a dumb question at all, typically I run the engine to charge items with my inverter but you can turn on the inverter without turning on the engine. You'd only want to do that sparingly since it can drain your battery pretty quick. I do it occasionally for 15-20 minute charging sessions - I set an alarm to make sure I remember to go turn my engine on in order to recharge my battery. I made the mistake once of draining my battery using the inverter in the backcountry of Utah's canyon lands....won't make that mistake again!
Unfortunately, many yeti products are no longer made in the USA, some are, but not all. I suppose the appeal of low labor costs and maximizing profits is the driving force.
Yeah, I've noticed that too. Seems the Rambler drinkware and Hopper coolers are made in China now. Yeti's website says the Tundra coolers are made in the US (Iowa and Wisconsin) and the Philippines. I'm wondering if the parts are made in the Philippines but the cooler assembly is in the US? I just picked up another Yeti Roadie from REI - they lowered the price $50 to $200 which was better than the pelican cooler I was looking at. Overall, I'm very pleased with the Yeti Roadie - good compact size for one person. There are so many awesome coolers out there these days - Pelican, Orca, Cabela's brand, Yeti, Engel, Igloo...the options are endless. Do you have a personal preference? I always like to hear from others about their experience with different coolers.
I am still looking for a cooler that I plan to keep for life, much like you. Right now, I use your basic igloo, it works but its no yeti. I do have yeti cups and rtic cups, in my opionion they are the same, just slightly different lid. I think yeti is as good as it gets for the money. You can see others sell, but they dont sell like the yeti products. yeti has the marketing and popularity going for it, and a quality product to sustain. Cant go wrong with a yeti. Thanks for the videos!
Does your ARE ever leak and if so what have you done about it, especially the back door and behind the cab were the bed meets the shell, thanks!
Hi Eric, thanks for watching! Yes, I had some issues when I first got my topper where the topper gate would meet up with the tailgate so I put some rubber molding on the topper gate in order to alleviate the issue I was experiencing. I haven't had any problems with the area you mentioned but was thinking it may have to do with the barrier in-between the topper shell and the bed. I put down a thin rubber layer in-between my topper and truck which seems to do the trick. Best of luck with resolving the issue!
What kind of bug repellent do you use on your skin?
How long is your Gerber axe?
How do you make your road shower?
Hey Brian here to
and has anyone heard of the Russian tents Lotus?
Very nice presentation. You explain things very thoroughly without repeating yourself. (That’s a CZcams pet peeve of mine...”You’ve said that twice already!!”). I’m a new subscriber.
Where’s your first aid kit?
