  • The final 5:15 of one of the greatest musical compositions of all time, The Firebird. Composed by Igor Stravinsky, masterfully performed by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and passionately conducted by Valery Gergiev, if this doesn't make the hair on the back of your neck stand up, nothing will!

Hard to argue against that. Oddly enough, the finale was used by the prog rock band Yes in the early 1970s to open their concerts, where the final bars of the Firebird blended into their opener, Siberian Khatru.

I checked and he holds the final chord for about 12 seconds while other orchestras are generally more around the 6 to 8 seconds. He's pushing it but I love the passion of it.

The comment about Stravinsky vs. Gergiev as conductors of this work reminds me that I have always used Stravinsky as a prime example of a great composer who did not fully realize what he had created. I know this is true of some great playwrights as well Anyone who belittles the impact of conductors and directors doesn't know what they're talking about.

The shimmering beginning, the swirling rise, the triumphant statement, the step back, then punch after punch, power on top of power, then the complete smacks of perfection hitting each cheek until my eyes roll back, then another brave step away, and then the roll of completion.
