Batt Mann 100% to have been in the jam would be enough for most people... but to change direction completely straight away and knock out at least 5 of the very best singles ever made (child, summer, best thing, moods and shout to etc ) is just unbelievable
I was so upset when the Jam broke up, but then the Style Council songs started coming and I loved them even more. Great that Paul decided at a very young age that he wanted to grow up.
Can't agree, unfortunately. When artists change / go through development, it might not be anything to do with growing up. Maybe they get less angry. Maybe more. Hopefully their talent evolves.
Love The Style Council.. Mick Talbot, Dee C Lee & Paul. Lovely melody & original lyrics by the 'poet' Mr Weller. Underrated band. Music & lyrics of the band still sound so current today. Thanks to my own 'Paul' for putting me in touch with TSC x
Weird how the presenters never mentioned the fact that this was a live performance. But then it was Simon Bates, so perhaps I shouldn't be that surprised!
"The Paris Match" by The Style Council. Live on Top of the Pops in 1983. czcams.com/video/-ztcz7FFYWw/video.html Personnel: Paul Weller (vocals), Mick Talbot (keyboards), Steve White (drums), Tracie Young (backing vocals)
I have to say I disagree with the sentiment here and prefer the Tracy Thorn version. She emotes a melancholy timbre that just seems to fit the mood of the song. Listening to it transports me to a smoky room in a downstairs cabaret in Paris with Tracey playing the role of Chanteuse.
One of the most under-rated tracks of Paul Weller's in my opinion. Sublime and atmospheric.
Some of the style council songs were and still are very good 👍
Well,ER😉said,Trudie😎
There is a version with d c lee singing it
Weller should be given a lifetime achievement award.
Mick Talbot's playing on this version is absolutely bloody superb!
I Agree, what a little GEM of a song, Beautiful
A truly wondrous song. Paul Weller really is a genius, so much quality with so much diversity in such a vast catalogue of brilliance.

daniel MARSHALL
Quite right,
He didn’t rest in his laurels, he kept evolving, kept writing classics. The mark of true genius.
Met my future wife to this tune, and I've loved it for ever and a day. 🍺
I hope you're a great match, pal!😎👌All the best from,🏴

Love that voice and the piano.
The best version of the song. Exquisite !!!
Great song by mr Weller...

TOTPs best moment in their entire history....
utterly superb on all angles
Except Paul’s hair 😂
One of their best songs ever.
This song gives me goosebumps. What a voice.
Inderdaad wat een fantastische stem.. weergaloos
Still got the original " 12" to this, still love it, a very young Steve white on drums, great drummer, even today.
The LP version of this is my number one fav of all time. 😊
What a track.
you and me both, buddy!
It's really really great
Probably my favourite TSC song
Miss those times.
My favourite
Excellent clip.Thanks.
For little ol' me, nothing compares to this arrangement or the PW vocal. Respect to Tracey T, for sure.
Odd that they never reached No1 with any of their singles. Weller looking cool as ever!
My mid 70's Action Man had that very same barnet.
One of Paul's best songs, one of his worst haircuts
A great song from a great singer
Paul Weller - epitome of style
This version is better than I remembered. It took me 10 years to learn the Thorn version on guitar. Took another 10 to find a bird that could sing it.
😂👌🤣
what a relief...
rare..very rare..
Incroyable.
Great song fashion turned a different corner musically stunning. Cafe Bleu great album
Love your songs mr Weller ❣
This is the version I remember on the long hot summer EP.
What a sensitive man ! Great song !
83? Ti adoro! Io minorenne e ascoltando....bellisimo❤
Muito bom!
Sublime
I LOVE the Weller vocal version of this song, to me it just has so much more vocal punch than the Thorn version.
Planet of the Deaf Both versions are great. Weller version tips it for me..... But Thorn also..... Sometimes. Depends on my ever-changing mood ☺
@@chelseajools5137 Haha I understood that reference
I agree. Also I have to say that to beat a song sung by Tracey thorn is a task almost impossible. She’s exquisite 🙏🏻
Have you heard Dee C Lee’s version? that’s great as well
Such a rare treat to hear this live version by Paul! I much prefer this over the Tracy Thorn version.
I totally agree
I prefer the Tracey Thorn version….so sultry
💛
I so agree
Take a look at Walking the Night/Cost of Loving - (Japan 1987) Amazing musical arrangement & vocals.
Anyone know of any more live versions of this song? Paul Weller singing, of course!
bella che altro aggiungere...
such a manly voice especially on those high notes
TOTP you never had it so good
Weird how the presenters never mentioned the fact that this was a live performance. But then it was Simon Bates, so perhaps I shouldn't be that surprised!
*I like this singer, has he done much more, never seen him before* 🇳🇫
Steve Blonde Are u winding ? It's Paul Weller.
What's life been like on Mars since the mid 70s
weller looking bowie-esque....
Nice Piano rift from Mick which isn't on the EP version.
Paul the best!!
Stratospheric sound love Paul Weller
Dee C Dee has an awesome version too

This is evidently live. Who said New Order were the only band playing live on 1983's TOTP?
Not anyone that I know tbf...but still...y'know...
Weller's definitely not singing live. He misses a bit at 1:48.
Even though its his song I liked dee c Lee's version of it.
Simon Bates was a propper Bell-End....Great song though.
Love the way he says "parry match"😂😂
This seems live to me. Am I right?
Prefer the version on the Long Hot Summer EP with the accordion 🪗 and French speak.
Myming
Too bad he didn't get rid of his barber lol

I presume the dislikes are from the thick die hard Jam fans!! FFS
Calling them thick is a bit strong, but TSC didn’t relate to many people the same way that The Jam did which is completely understandable
Thorn gives much more flat sound to it. THis song needs to be more silent. So album version is to be preffered
Weller was lost at the time.
Captain Sensible Cocaine 😔
The audience was lost. A real artist doesn't have to please anybody but himself.
tracy thorn version is much better for me.
Pish
not there best
