  • Here is an investigative tension cue which is always fun. This one is only 60 seconds long and it is a great way of focussing on the emotion you are trying to convey because you don't have a chance for breakdowns and multiple sections. You do need to add interest as it goes along by adding layers of instrumentation, but a really useful exercise if you are struggling to write longer pieces. I hope you find in interesting and useful, Dex :)

Great cue! The only element that you didn’t cover was the Albion One strings and the tension of the chordal harmonies that they added. Wonderful idea to practice writing 60 second cues (only a single section) to practice building/supporting one emotion. Cheers, Dex!

Yeah... Thanks for spotting that Jim... you win first prize for observational skills! :) For those interested the Strings were playing Gm7 and Fm7, which is the extra harmony you can hear.

Thanks Dex… but it’s not just the chords, but their voicing that add to the tension. The Gm7 is a more tight voicing while the Fm7 voicing opens up a bit. The dissonance created by the voicing of the Gm7 adds to the tension, while the resolution of the tension by the slightly more open voicing of the Fm7 resolves that tension in a very satisfying manner. The ‘rinse and repeat’ cycle of the strings is all part of a very enjoyable cue. Cheers!

Good point Jim... it's one of those things that 'just sounds right' when composing... I think you find more of them the more you try. Cheers, Dex :)
