When working on my No Build Van Build in my 2020 NV200 Van, I wanted to try to start off with things I already had in my tent camping set up. But along the way I quickly realized that for long term the cooler system I was using simply was not holding up to the bumps of the road, the heat of the day and the constant need for purchasing ice was not very efficient for being in the back country. I started the search for alternative refrigeration and found SetPower. SetPower was kind enough to send me the AJ40 to test along the bumpy roads, the heat of the hottest days in Texas and all the adventures I take on along the way. After using it for a little over a month and taking it along for over 1,500 miles of travel on bumpy and winding road, keeping it inside the non-insulated van and running it entirely on a Jackery Power Station this is what I learned........

I almost got a set power refrigerator but I ended up with the c4 tmp40 I went with the 20 quart because I have so many other coolers and you can make ice in this one and put them into your other coolers freeze bottles of water.... The real reason I bought the model that I did though is because it has the option of a thermal cover and the alpicool brand we're the only other people I could find who offered the thermal cover to fit the refrigerator.... I'm running a lot smaller than you ... I have a 400 watt solar battery goal zero brand with two 100 watt briefcase panels I have a 30-ft cord on those panels so I can keep my van parked in the shade and put the panels in the Sun.... I love your videos you are such a great presentator and such an effective communicator Amazing!! And OMG you Radiate Enthusiasm
I have seen many set powers with covers I am not sure if they are doing them recently or if they were individually created... I have been thinking of adding one myself in the future with this heat of summer

Knew you would like it . I have the AJ50 it’s just taller but everything else is about the same 53 qt inside runs quiet and sips power lightly. I’ve ran mine over three months straight it works well as a freeze too but your power consumption will about double. Not really an issue if you have about 100 watts of solar you’re golden or if you drive enough to charge a battery.
A freezer would be cool to have for some things but I need more of a fridge than freezer for what I do. I am loving the space and with me constantly driving the battery pull never is an issue like you said!!!

Call me crazy but I hear it humming. At night it would be a deal breaker...just saying.
I think the mic picked up on the jackery compressor kicking in it is very sensitive and the sound would be ambient at best.... I have an issue sleeping with noise and never have noticed a hum as it runs inside the van

I use a series of mounts and cameras on my van and then also my drone to capture most of it... just takes a little more time to capture than just driving normal...

What kind of cooker is that?
Ridgemonkey compact connect it is amazing!!!
Keep your Set power on ECO, always. It breaks in better then the appliance will last much longer. I tie a string loop around the grille then pass the power cord through it. This keeps the cord from kinking at the plug. 41 watts on ECO. 63 watts on MAX, but ECO gives more cool on your battery.
The footage at the beginning of this vide was spectacular young lady, your skills to include us in your journey are spectacular. I would love to know more about the location you visited with the dock.

Yes!! If it runs the average of 55 watts full blast you can run it for 9-12 hours

@@peterpowell6168 That's kind of what I have been doing so far. I like to purchase a few items that are frozen that I plan on using the first day or two out.. I know they won't stay fully frozen but they stay sooo cold on bottom and it works...

Good to see your follow up with the SetPower. Looks like a pretty solid unit. Is this a fridge you could use as a seat also or is the lid a bit less sturdy than a chair for an average size man/woman?
This one seems to be sturdy enough to do so... I wouldn't probably put a larger person on it but I think it would be ok for an average person.. i personally will not be using it as such but possibly

I have a setpower 20 quart that I can run for 12-14 hours on a fully charged 240 Jackery. I love both of those devices. Great video and useful information. What is the song at the beginning?

I have a standard fridge and have more problems with it. Have considered a chest fridge freezer like this one as an alternative. Good feedback to consider.

Never had any frost build up using it at the 30-37 degree mark…. Any lower and yes it does because it attempts to go into freezer mode
I see you're caring about eating some fresh natural unprocessed vegetable and fruits instead of canned. Thats is so much better for us I believe. Personally, I avoid ham and eggs but you make a slam dunk beautiful sandwich if I say so myself.

The frittata I am making is being made in a device called a Ridge Monkey (model Connect Compact), a UK based company which will soon be available in the US but currently is quite the challenge to find and import...lol.. I had been seeing some of the UK van lifers like Ken & Carol over at @lifeistooshort using it for some time and knew I needed one to help with many of the dishes I love to cook but often cannot because of the space. It fully breaks down and stows away in a tiny footprint. The ingredients are very simple, green bell peppers (sometimes I also add mushrooms) Canadian bacon/fine chopped ham slices, egg whites and shredded cheese. Super simple to make and takes less than 10 minutes using the Ridge Monkey as you flip it over about half way through the process on low heat. I added just plain mustard to the English Muffin to finish it off and give it a more sandwich feel.
The place I was visiting in the first part of the adventure is a place in North Texas called Clear Lake the campground is a different place not far away called Tadra Point Campground, it is a small primitive campground with no improvements other than some vault toilets, but great for some boon docking at a very inexpensive price point. Tons of small lakes in the area and hiking. It is a part of the LBJ National Grasslands.
How do you like the hinge top on this one? I noticed it opens out toward your door, does that make it easier? I have a front open and I like that one pretty well.
It really is great in some situations and not so much in others. The seat sits slightly back so I do have to walk it out a bit to open it in the van... that can get tedious sometimes... otherwise I love that it has so much room and can be fully accessed and not fall back down.
The sharp knife doesn’t scratch the pan u have?

i have the TC35 from set power and have had zero probs!! i dont know if yours has this feature but mine has a voltage meeter for my van battery so i can see how low my battery is getting.. love mine!!!!
The individual read out on mine does not do that however my power station does so that I can see what kind of pull I have
@BunnyPlaysHere I also forgot to mention I have an old cargo Van that has an inverter built into itend to it so I run my fridge off that for about 4 days before I have to turn the motor on and charge up the battery.. I just get to keep an eye on it this way

Was the cooler fridge heavy to move out of van?
A few questions, how long is the cord? I am just wondering if it would be long enough for you to plug in your power and your solar panels while keeping it inside your van. I am very curious about this.
between the cord for the fridge and the cord for the panels I could definitely have a bit of distance between the panel, the power bank and the fridge where I could park in shade and still be charging in the sunlight.. I am not sure of the exact measurements but there is a little bit of length there

The company does have smaller ones.. and I will be sharing a smaller fridge I have also to compare the two on my upcoming travels...

Yes!! They have a plug for home use also!!!
The drive was amazing... I always enjoy sharing the places I go when I can... there was a HUGE turtle swimming but I just barely got it on camera so I didn't get to share
So 55 watts, that is completely doable in Arizona and New Mexico sunlight where I spend much of my time. Do they have an insulated cover?
I have seen some insulated covers however I am unsure if they currently have them for all models.

That is a RidgeMonkey I imported it from the UK and it took a little while to get here but I really love it. I also have the larger one and have now invested in the pan which will allow me to cook soups and things also the quality of those is just superior, they have a locking mechanism through a magnet system, and overall one of the best pieces of cooking equipment that I have ever purchased, not just for a van but also for a home
How is the noise with this unit? Compressor and Fan? Thanks!
It has a faint humm but nothing crazy... i have tested several other fridges and found this one to have less noise than most
I have strange question. Do you leave it plug in all time? Even when van is off. Do you plug into jackery when van off? I’m new so this so sorry about strange question
I have the refrigerator plugged into a power station at all times. Unless I am not using it in which case he gets a nice little rest at that time. However it does have to be plugged in and typically the only time I will unplug it is if it’s extremely cold outside and I know it will hold its temperature

Recipe?
Pretty easy... just spritz with spray butter, then I sautéed the bell peppers added the egg whites and then cheese... very simple.. I also sometimes like to sauté onion with the pepper to add a little more flavor
