Destructions to South Garo Hills District is Unimaginable- CM Conrad Sangma

    HCM Conrad K Sangma, MLA Rakkam Sangma, DC South Garo Hills, officials of Meghalaya Police and other Departments traveled 2 Hours by boat from Karukol to Siju and proceeded on foot for 10 kms from Siju to Rongdong to take stock of the damages in the area.
    Seeing the scale of the damages, HCM termed the destructions ‘Unimaginable’. The residents of the area informed HCM that they have not seen water levels rise so high in the last 50 years, going up to 30 feet from the usual level. The water level of the Simsang River also went up to over 50 feet damaging the Rewak hanging bridge that connects different villages across Simsang.
    The roads to Siju have been washed off and along the road from Siju to Rongdong multiple landslides, huge rocks, piles of mud, felled trees and vegetation can be seen throughout the stretch.
    HCM stated that clearing piles of debris, multiple landslides & washed off roads along the NH62 from Rongdong to Baghmara, connecting Siju will be a herculean task for the team who are working day and night to clear the roads or what remains of them.
    In Siju, HCM visited families affected by the landslides and handed over ex gratia to the family of one deceased individual. He also visited injured people in the Siju PHC.
    HCM also spoke to the officials of various departments and instructed them to extend all assistance to the affected areas.
