  • Is the 1968 Dodge Charger R/T The Coolest Muscle Car Ever?
Dodge Charger R/T. In todays special we get to have a close look at a 1968 Dodge Charger R/T muscle car - admittedly not a factory R/T, but a great tribute conversion from an 383ci 4 speed Dodge Charger to a thunderous, 502ci Hemi V8 powered monster.
The Dodge Charger R/T was the muscle favoured by villains, rebels and badboys alike. Could it be the coolest muscle car ever made? Watch now as we get this super badass car out on the road to find out what its all about, while having a chat with the cars owner Max.
Many thanks to Max for the opportunity to film his cool car.

The '68 is the ultimate classic muscle car.
I am one of the fortunate few to own one, a B5 blue, 426 hemi, auto car with the 3.54:1 geared sure grip rear end.
FYI, the consol option was available with both the base charger ( 318 v8 and 383-2 and 383 4 barrel v8 ) and the R/T ( 440-4 barrel and the king Kong elephant engine, the 426-8 barrel hemi ).

The first car that I bought at age 18 upon high school graduation was a 1970 Dodge Charger R/T in Plum Crazy (purple) with white top & interior, and the 440 Magnum engine. So fast. Could spin the tires for blocks (not that I ever did that...). Cost in 1976? $500. Beside awful gas mileage, the only other down side (for me) was that guys were always trying to steal it. One morning my father came out the front door of the house and found a guy sitting in the driver's seat. He was able to break into the car, but he didn't know how to start it!

Very nice tribute to one of the automotive icons of the era, and a beautiful specimen indeed. I had the foresight of purchasing a fixer-upper '69 R/T back around 1989 for $800. I plowed about $10k into it and sold it in 2000 for about what I put into it. Sold it too early and wish I kept it!

The 1968 Charger R/T had only one engine, the 440 Magnum with factory 375 hp. Great work guys!!!! Great car! You could get the console with 383. But to be an R/T it had to have a 440 or 426 Hemi.

Back when I was 15 in 1996, I worked a temporary- hire a student summer job of helping a family move. Towards the end of the job, the owner opened the small garage and I saw the partially visible hideaway headlight grill with "Charger R/T" on it. I saw spellbound. I asked the owner some questions. A short while later a neighbor asked him if he would sell the "old Dodge." He sold it for $1100.00. It was a 440 automatic car. Originally metallic brown. 😮 Now I am 42 and own a sweet 1968 Barracuda fastback powered by a 400 based 512 stroker backed by an A833 4 speed. 👍

You guys are having too much fun. I had a '68 Charger back in the mid 70s. I got it for under $500 US dollars and let me tell you, it was a wreck. Long story short, me and five friends put her back together. Mine was a 383 w/4 speed manual transmission. We replaced the drive train with a 383 magnum engine with matching tranny. We replaced fenders, quarter panels and the trunk lid. The only decent part was the hood. I miss that car every time I watch videos like this, bringing back the glory days of "muscle car" world.

A friend that I grew up with owned one of these. We were rooming together in Austin in 1974, and he let me borrow the car to run some errands. I was driving along the Drag by UT, when I spotted Karen Darvin, a beautiful redhead, hitching in the opposite direction. I turned around as fast as I could --- so fast, in fact, that I hit a fire hydrant costing me $335. That was 8 months rent and a few cheeseburgers in those days. Surprisingly, she was still there when I got back, so I gave her a ride to the mall. That was the last time I drove it, and the last time I saw the redhead in person. But the following year, I saw her in a magazine. She was Bruce Springsteen's girlfriend. It was a great car.

This was not a muscle car. Too big, expensive, and heavy. But it was beautiful in the most sinister way, and with a 440 or Hemi would have been a formidable performance car.
The best presentation of a Charger in a movie is as driven by the bad guys in Steve McQueen’s Bullitt. When preparing to film, it was discovered that McQueen’s 390 Mustang GT wasn’t close to being able to stay with the totally stock 440 Charger RT. The Mustang’s suspension and drivetrain required heavy modification to survive that legendary chase through the streets of San Francisco.

You could have a 4 speed, floor shift only of course, with or without the console, but if you didn't spec the console with the automatic you got a column shift...i.e. no floor shift auto without a console

I bought a second hand one of thos in the 70s - remember the oil price issues? You could buy ‘yank tanks’ for a song, there weren’t a lot around, but a few senior executives used to buy the things as a status symbol in the 660s & early 70s. Mine was a sort of light red, with those fins sloping down from the roof to the boot - I thought that was pretty cool at the time, because the newly released XJSS had them. Mine was a three speed manual, converted to right hand drive. It had the 440 engine coupled with ‘boulevard’ suspension, and drum brakes! I thisnk the Flor shift misght have also been a modification- reverse was where you would expect to find first gear! It was surprisingly comfortable,, but rather deadly I’d also had a Dodge Phoenix, that thing was huge, with beach seats & a novel push-button automatic. Only a straight six engine though. It is funny to think that my current car has only a three litre V6 petrol engine, which produces almost the same BHP as the Dodge 440, less than half the capacity! But it is a Jag Portfolio, it belongs to a different world of motoring. I

The A727 TorqueFlite could never be described as a "slushbox" - it's probably on of the best 3 speed automatics ever built.

As much I love the American Chargers, and especially the '68, I do think the Aussie E49 Charger is the best muscle car, a gorgeous looking car and it would comfortably beat any V8's on the road.

1961-1972 was the Pinnacle of American car styling...went straight in the crapper after that until 2000. Interiors and exteriors are beautiful. No handling or braking to speak off, ride quality was generally good especially on the higher end Cadillacs and Lincolns. Always enjoyed restoring and polishing them - driving them, not so much.
