    I like the comments in particular on the brain, which is pretty much the most complex structure we have ever discovered by volume. It always reminds me of a famous quote by the famous physicist Phillip Anderson. "The ability to reduce everything to simple fundamental laws, does not imply the ability to start from those laws and reconstruct the universe."

    I literally got to inspect the synchrotron in the Proton Therapy Center at St. Jude this morning. It was mesmerizing. The device itself was as large as 3 school buses shoulder-to-shoulder. Dozens of magnets as big as cars. The engineering of the particle line itself was also pretty neat. What really blew me away was the proton therapy machinery the beams were fed into depending on which gantry was in use. Those devices looked like nuclear reactors. Two stories tall and just as wide.
    Hoping I get to see the cyclotron soon too

    Okay, on with the actual subject...
    Edited to add: that last description made me think of the way that Van Gogh painted the sky on _Starry Night,_ and how the character of Van Gogh said it looked to him as he painted it, in the Doctor Who episode _Vincent and the Doctor._ ❤❤
    Great video, fascinating conversation! Just wish that commercial in the middle hadn't given me an earache, since it was at least 15 points higher on my volume control than the video itself was. 🤨😕

    8:10 I disagree that Physics is just Math really. Of course mathematical universe if you are a Platonist is much beyond Physics. I am glad Dr Sabine did not interject or deny that as Maths is a form of compact and rigorous language for Physics. So if Dr Sabine did not say anything, I wish to make my peace. It is Maths really if Dr Sabine agreed.

    'everything is biology/chemistry/physics' - until you stop and think about what Meaning there is any of it - and realise that the answer is 'None'. Science is mechanism, and nothing else. Life and morality and philosophy and art are Meaning, and they encompass science, not the other way around. Be human and live before you become a scientist and engineer it all away.

    • @sulcuryaltinone4570
      @sulcuryaltinone4570 Před 2 lety +6

      Our ability to formulate meaning with our minds is due to the interactions of biology/chemistry/physics, and practicing science is a practice of utilizing the things that make us human. You make it sound like being a scientist takes one away from being human.

      @@alastairmcleod3635 I agree to a limit. Science is about how, which I love and am passionate about the how question. But it can't by itself, without the personal relational emotional side, identify the why. The how and the why must both be there, the why cradling the how. I am persuaded that the why has variables outside of science as understandable by finite human minds/senses and involves relational creative Persons. This relational why is revealed to us intentionally.
