Why is the Land Cruiser smoking like this?

  • The smoke is getting out of hand. Why do you think it's smoking like this? We'd love to hear your suggestions. The Toyota LandCruiser 100 series came with a 4.2 litre turbo diesel called the 1HD-FTE. They're known to be reliable, but this one is experiencing some sadness. Could it be the fuel injection pump? What do you think?

    White is usually indicative of overfueling as diesel causes a white mist when atomised and unburt. Partly burnt diesels usually black and oil is blue.
    Fuel pumps like that without looking it up might be part of the timing and it controls when the injectors fire before the days of common rail.
    They also run on a cam system inside the pump and the lines feed the injectors remotely. Due to this the rattle could be normal coming from the pump. As advised in other comments reduce the amount of work it has to do by changing filters etc and see if any change.
    Im no expert so just my thoughts.

    worn valve stem seals cause smoke on start up as oil drips into cylinders making heavy oil fuel mix in combustion chambers..easy fix time consuming, but easy to replace said seals..low pressure to injector pump can also cause rattle in injector pump..i would eliminate all of these before replacing very costly injector pump...i hope this helps in some way..

    Stack Pipe, fuel pickup, tank filters and genuine fuel filter. That was similar issue on a friends and that is how we fixed it. Its common to think that tis dead but its just all gunked up filters and the stack pipe (if it has one) if not, i'd suggest injector failure and its intermittent. It may also explain the noise, the pump is working harder cus its not getting the fuel it needs. Good luck guys.

    How is the hose of the turbo going to air cleaner? Filled with oil or not? If filled with oil,piston rings might be worn out.but still,it's cheaper to have the injection pump be overhauled or replaced whichever is cheaper. In the Phil's, overhauling costs $300

    Hi, first of all, love the channel. I have the same model LC new since 2005, only 140k on the clock, serviced regularly and only motorway and city driving.I have the same issue as you plus It is burning a lot of Oil.Heavily smoking on some start ups as well, blue/white and sometimes black. I have taken it to a few mechanics and their opinions on the issue are different. I had the injectors cleaned but still have the same issues. I am hoping I will finally find out the issue from your video lol

    • @vPerformance
      @vPerformance  Před 2 lety

      Well so far nothing cheap has fixed it. We've got a few more things to do, but all signs point to the injection pump right now. We've got more videos coming as we try things out.

  • @all41n14lla
    @all41n14lla Před rokem

    So if you gun the motor the smoke amount should become less dense .. But if remains the same color when you increase RPM I would do a leak down test to see if the cylinder pressures are within spec .. If they aren't maybe you have a head gasket issue , or an issue with the rings or cylinder walls ? ..

    • @vPerformance

    • @vPerformance
      @vPerformance  Před 2 lety +1

      Another great idea - this particular engine doesn't have glow plugs, but it does have an intake heater screen to do a similar job. That's been tested now. It draws 100 amps at startup, so it's clearly working!

    I have a HDJ79 that is also smoking. Starts mint and runs perfect, just has some grey/white smoke coming out the exhaust. almost hard to see when idling and easy to see when you give it a rev. Doesn't go away when warm, any ideas? Been sitting 3 years hasn't had a good run since (broken diff) so hoping it just needs a good run. Didn't do it before sitting 3 years from what I remember.

    I would look at the injector patterns first, then servicing the pump after that. Worth doing both once above 250k, haven't seen many 1hd-fte engines failing.

    • @vPerformance
      @vPerformance  Před 2 lety +1

      A good place to start. We removed all the injectors and got them serviced and ultrasonically cleaned (some were absolutely filthy). I think it's going to be that pump. I wonder if I can find a place to service it rather than a complete replacement.

    Going through a very similar issue with my hdj100, on reving it to 1500-1700rpm it will blow a fair bit of white smoke, and shakes its ass off. I've tried a known working ecu and spill control driver, aswell as running and earth from the spill control driver directly to the battery as that can be a common issue (earth's through the mounting bracket)
    Have put a new plug and checked wiring to the timing control valve another common issue.
    A diesel tech here in Australia said they had one with the same symptoms before chrissy and changed injectors and pump with no success, refuned old mate his pump and then went hunting around the wiring. Found dodgy/aged wiring to the crank angle sensor and that fixed it. However they did that to mine and still no luck. I checked through it today and noticed exposed wiring at the plugs, next step I'll replace the plug then the sensor itself, then I guess I'll have to get injectors tested and then pumped tested.
    We tow a 3t van and seems to still pull alright but does use more fuel than it should and while accelerating it makes an annoying rattle noise

    Hi there, my 4.2 fte cruiser did exactly the same, I spent months looking into it, if I was you try wiggling the wiring to the fuel solenoid on the pump, mine was exactly the same, the wiring from factory is too tight and pulls on the pins happens at around 200k, uk cars seem to suffer.
    I strongly advise you check that wiring and connection, as mine was exactly the same.

    It's apparent, that you aren't familiar to those engines.
    Stick a new genuine fuel filter on, blow air back through the fuel line to clean the tank filter, good to go.
    The sound from the pump is normal, just get it out and work.
    Keep up on the service and you will only be lifting the bonnet to add washerfluid, this isn't a vag or LR.

    Either nozzles and fuel pump issue or something major. If I was in your shoes, would start with the basics, replacing engine oil, fuel filter and etc.
    Second step would be applying directly Liqui moly diesel purge to the fuel filter/nozzles, sharing link for reference:
