    I heard Chris waddle say that Bobby Robson was giving the team an in depth team talk for ages before the semi final against Germany. It was going on for ages , Bobby points to Gazza, you're gonna be playing against mattheus, he's their best player, stop him, keep him quiet. Gazza is looking at Bobby, nodding along "Aye" Aye, Aye Gaffer. "
    Bobby robson finally leaves the room. Gazza turns to the other player's " who the fucks mattheus?? "

    In May 1990 Paul Gascoigne played for Doncaster Rovers against Barnsley in a testimonial for Rovers' former keeper Paul Malcolm, with whom Gazza had played as a schoolboy in Newcastle. It seems crazy that he'd be allowed to play a game like that on the eve of Italia 90. He was simply incredible. Some of the skill he displayed that early summer evening I can remember nearly 30 years later, even if I can't remember the score.

      I was there too. Im good friends with Colin Douglas who played that night and recently gave him my program from this game. Colin told me they were not eating orange or drinking tea at half time but instead had a few whiskeys lol. Redondo penalties and taking a 60 yard pass down by sitting on it lol gazza was different class.

    What makes me laugh about Gazza, is he looks at a world cup or a euro as one big lads holiday, much like i did when i was 18 and a coach load of students went to Belgium for 4 days. Not there for a holiday, but the minute we got on the booze the coursework went out the window before we even made it to the hostel. Half of us got arrested and the hostel was trashed. That's Gazza at a world cup 😂

    • @uptwisting
      @uptwisting Před 4 lety +6

      @@MrAckers75 He really wasn't. Every team needs a player like him, who not only does the dirty work, can run for days, plays in multiple positions and shuts down the oppositions style but also has strong technical abilities. If anything he was underrated and clearly by you.
      He was a deep player who scored and assisted more than Gazza. played for longer and allowed others to do their job while doing more than all in his position. Gazza was a legend but Matthaus was a winner for a reason. He knew how to win games and did, shut down opponents and support the team. While also earning 150 caps for his national side. If that makes you overrated, good god I hope England get a few more overrated players.
