And yet, you can see from his long pauses and his struggle for the right words that he's overcoming crippling shyness moment by moment, forcing himself to carry on and be himself in the face of what I can only imagine must be agonizing self-doubt.

I absolutely love his comments about shyness. I've recently come to realize how much insecurity is an expression of one's inflated self-consequence, because it tells you that you're not living up to a false sense of importance you place on yourself. At some point in my 40s, I began to notice for the first time what it was like to see someone with an open fly, spinach in their teeth, or whatever else, and realize how little it affected my esteem of them. In fact, all it did was reassure me that my own foibles were of far less consequence than I'd ever imagined.

    I'm pretty sure that,
    A. Peter hadn't forgotten who the interviewer was
    and
    B. Dick knew exactly who the interviewer was.
Because the show was The Tonight Show and the interviewer was Johnny Carson.
In the later years of the show, after it had moved to California, Peter was on The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson and Johnny brings up the time that Peter was on the show and there were issues related to his "flying in from Japan."

I wasn't sure what was going on, until I realized he was terribly nervous. Which that is how I would be if I went in front of an audience. Which I have done. It wasn't so bad when I was playing guitar in a band, because I had something to distract me. But like I went up for a poetry reading at a club, and I literally went blank. I read my poem, but my mind went into a kind of shock.
