    Introducing Dad's JS Test Knife Number 1, a stunning 9.3" western-style chef knife that boasts a custom-casted copper alloy bolster and pin. The blade is crafted from 5160 steel, and the handle is made from a gorgeous stabilized and dyed red oak burl. The distressed bolster and polished domed pin have a rosy-bronze hue, adding to the knife's overall beauty. Despite its size, this knife is incredibly fast, thanks to its "S" grind and weight-reducing properties. Ideal for users, it features a comfortable, rounded spine, and its choke-up design allows for precise food sculpting.

    I love the slight taper on the handle for the fingers to wrap and grip; those details are what really make a knife special. I love all Royer tutorials, but yours are extra peaceful, Dad Royer.

    I wholeheartedly recommend some form of breathing protection when grinding steel like that. A half mask with the highest grade for dust protection should go from around 50-100 dollars. There are also more expensive full masks. I know Alec Steele uses a full mask with like, its own air system where it sends fresh air into his mask. Breathing in all that metal dust can cause severe problems over time that will affect your ability to work and may result in a trip to the hospital that puts you in medical debt. Stay safe everyone!

      That leaves plenty of material in the center of the S grind. Be sure to check the center if you’re not sure. I’ve had at the thinnest.040 in the center. That’s at the edge of my current comfort zone. Keep Forging On my friend.

    Have you ever finished a handle with a true shellac finish? The wood you use is so beautiful the shellac flakes would really give it a premium look to it. It is not as hard wearing as other finishes but it can be covered with linseed oil which itself would further set off the shellac. Just a thought. Awesome work as usual. Rock on.

      Good question senshi. I take all of my grits up to the sharpie mark. Then on my final grit I gently start a soft blending while checking each side. so being kinda new to knifemaking, ive been absorbing information and asking questions on all kinds of things. it seems that the general consensus (from many different sources) on 5160 is that its not the greatest steel for knives, so im just curious as to why 5160 was the steel of choice for this build, compared to something like 1084/15N20/1095/damascus etc., and if im mistaken on 5160 being a not so good knife steel. ive used it for knives when i started and they didnt hold as good an edge as the 80CrV2 steel i use now.
    also i make hunting/bushcraft knives, and if anyone has info on what steel they recommend for that id appreciate the help.

    • @KyleRoyerKnives
      @KyleRoyerKnives  Před rokem +1

      Great question Ian. 5160 is a tried and true faithful steel. It’s one of the most diversified alloy steels easily available. Properly heat treated and a proper geometry on the blade for it’s intended use it’s a great choice. Our steel is certified. Bone yard steel may have proprietary mystery alloys that may not make a proper knife. There are a large range of heat treat recipes for 5160. And apex geometry. Definitely go with what you can get and what works for you. You are in a good place if you are finding you have preferences. Keep Forging On my friend.
