- R. Strauss: Horn Concerto no 2, Es - Dur, Op 86 - Szabolcs Zempleni (Horn), Dariusz Mikulski (Conductor), TPO, Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra, Bangkok
- Hudba
This is the most musically beautiful interpretations of the Strauss 2nd I have ever heard. His musicianship is impeccable, phrasing is elegant and well thought out. It's not often that you hear musicianship of this quality. His technical execution is as good as it gets. I would like to much more of this young hornist.
Stanton Manolakas
Dear +Stanton Manolakas thank you very much for your comment :)
I love this concerto, much as I love most late Strauss. As a clarinetist, I would note the many great clarinet licks in this piece, which are so fun to play.
He has the perfect tone we all strove for growing up playing the horn.
This is my new favourite version of this piece- so flowing, so melodic so serene, considering Strauss wrote it in the midst of the horrors of Germany in WW 2. It gives us a glimpse of his 4 Last Songs to come later. Every phrase, every turn every dynamic change-- beautifully managed. Nothing like the energy and tension of a masterful live performance FROM MEMORY !!! Strauss' mastery of a vocal line is exquisite. This piece could just as well be a concerto for Heldentenor. Many thanks to Szabolcs and Darius.
Thank you very much for the kind words :) Many greetings, Dariusz
This is the most beautiful performance I have ever heard of this composition! Bravo to the soloist, and all best wishes for a stellar career! The orchestra sounds fine, too.
brawooooooo!!!!
This performance is simply beautiful. I've replayed this video countless times... I am so inspired by this - I wish one day I would be able to play half as good as Zempleni! Thank you for sharing :)
Thank you very much for the kind words - have a good day :)
This performance is AWESOME! I love it, I wish I could listen to it all day long!
I love the brassy sound. Missing in so many solos I hear. Awesome!!!!
An absolutely amazing perfoamance of one of the most challenging pieces in the repertoire. Thanks to CZcams for making so many players known. A great orchestra too. The sound he gets is spectacular too:- the mic must be very close.
Very noble performance. I've always thought that the coda is like the apotheosis of all romanticism--as we swirl away into the ether. You are a great artist, sir.
Superb! Mr. Zempleni seems to truly enjoy what he is playing and it really comes out in his superior lyricism. One of the most enjoyable recordings I have heard!
What an enthralling performance. As a young horn player, I can only dream of achieving such greatness with such a fantastic orchestra under fantastic direction!
digity239 Thank you very much for your kind words. I wish you lot of success with playing horn. Dariusz
Csodaszép kürthang és brilliáns technika: Zempléni Szabolcs ismertetőjegyei. Kívánunk sok sikert nemzetközi szerepléseihez is, többet halljuk itthon!
I just wanted to listen to the beginning of his recording to see how Zempleni compares to Brain and my other favorites.... I couldn't stop listening! Musical! not the mechanical play all the notes and rhythms that horn playing of the last 30 years has become. No need for the Schmid triple, this is stellar!!! Bravo!
here in Panama I love to listen to Strauss: Congratulations to a remarkable recording with an exotic Orchestra!!! The conductor succeeded to delivered a presentable result- the solo Horn very authentically!
Great performance. BIG sound, really goes for it.
This is simply my Goal. I am only a Freshman in Highschool, and by the end of college I would love to know this.
I'm so proud with this piece very much that I was play first flute with you and great soloist on this video 💝🎹🎼🎉
Dear Bunnaphat, thank you very much for your comment - I am also very happy to make this music with - you are a great musician and beeping on the stage with you is always a great experience and guaranty for quality musical cooperation. Hope to see you again soon!!
meraviglioso stupendo Szabolcs Zempleni ed il grande maestro Dariusz Mikulski ho toccato il cielo con questa musica.Pietro.
I Just can't believe he memorized all this OMG!! I'm a horn player and memorizing three minutes worth of music is like hell for me!!! I am thoroughly impressed!!
such a wonderful, light and spirited tone!
Great work! I appreciate the audience member who gave a solid, "Bravo." Szabolcs Zempleni is excellent on the horn. Need to hear much more from him.
This is my aspiration... And my inspiration. I swear, one day I'll be able to to play this half as well.
I cannot say other thing, just AMAZING!!!
Wonderful performance. Such a hard piece. It's up there with Adagio and Allegro, The Konzertstuck, and the Weber Concertino. Bravo!
Fabulous performance, loved it!! I think I will go and stamp on my horn now...!
Thank you very much for your comment :)
Magnifiquement interprété et orchestré !
Well done!!!! Both soloist and orchestra played beautifully.
Wonderful exchanges between soloist passages and the orchestra. The individual lines within the orchestra are highlighted so well. Zempleni does a fabulous job to allow his lines to become secondary to the orchestra when required. I also enjoyed your conducting Maestro!
Thank you very much for your comment Jarrad. Wish you a good day, dm :)
What a beautiful sound!
Outstanding interpretation.
Very nice. Very difficult piece. Reminds me of Hermann Baumann's performance of the same back in the days. Beautiful.
Superb playing and very expressive! Enjoyed your interpretation of my favorite horn solo. Congratulations on a fine performance.
Wow, this is amazing. I'm a horn player myself but I am no where near that talented. This piece makes me so happy and peaceful.
Thank you very much for your comment Inga - wish you a lot of success and .. it is not to late I hope, Happy New Year :)
A joy to watch - and has inspired me.
Sehr gut!!!! Almost perfection! Dariusz Mikulski
Thank you very much for your comment :)
I believe this is the best musical interpretation of this concerto I have heard since first listening to the Dennis Brain version over fifty years ago. Since I have listened to the Brain recording probably hundreds of time, I can't help but compare. In the first movement Brain is a little more playful and light with some of the passages. In the third movement, Zemplini plays some passages a little more forcefully than Brain, but they are passages that perhaps should be a little more forcefully. Many can learn rather good technique, but few seem to rise to Zemplini's level of musicianship.
Just beautiful....the french horn really is an under appreciated instrument.
This is really beautiful...I love the horn :)
Thank you very much for your comment :)
no probs :p
Thank You my friends for so many nice comments. Enjoy :)
Beautiful! This is such an inspiring performance.
Thank you very much for your comment Ayleia :)
muito bom! linda apresentação de um lindo instrumento!
You play beautifully! Where do you play now?
Wish I could meet you when I am in Europe this month!
It's so cool to see that one of my horn heros is such a nice guy, too! You're quite the inspiration for up and coming musicians. Thanks for setting the bar so high David!
He is principle horn in Bamberg symphony.
Dont know if you guys cares but if you guys are bored like me atm you can watch all of the latest series on InstaFlixxer. I've been binge watching with my brother for the last few months xD
@Morgan Stanley yup, I've been watching on instaflixxer for since november myself :D
Gratulálok nagyon ott volt...
I agree with DarrenaShan. It's not just the horn that makes the player.... a horn can look like crap and still play soooooo beautifully. I like to say a worn horn is a well loved horn. :)
Bravissimo complimenti atutta l'orchestra
la ringrazio molto per le belle parole. buona giornata
wahnsinnig schön !!!!

..
Played like a boss!
PERFECT!!
beautiful
beautiful. clean, clear, serene, calm and commanding no nonsense musicality, - delightful. p.s. I have begun to believe that EVERYONE makes that little tiny burp around the third and fourth notes at the beginning as though it is a part of the piece! (prove me wrong!)
Are you speaking of the triplet figure in the second bar?
that gives me motivation
Great playing! I really enjoyed listening.
Thank You Deron - are you a horn player?
Used to be. Sorry didn't notice this till now.
Deron Fuller No problem :) Have a nice Sunday !!
That makes me feel so great. I play the french horn.

Actually it is an Alexander 103, probably the most popular horn in Europe.

I. Allegro 0:19
II. Andante con moto 9:15
III. Rondo: Allegro Molto 15:04
stupendo
Bravi!!!
It's a Gebr Alexander french horn (mod.103)
It is Alexander 103 :)
How long do you practice each day? And how do you make it sound so smooth and effortless? :O
Sure, he is playing Anexander
What year model is that Alex? I have one that looks identical but can’t find any identifying information on it
Dear TJ Gist, it is Alexander Model 103, messing
He is one :)
I'm a senior in high school going to college next year with dual major in Music Ed and Horn performance. TEACH ME YOUR WAYS! I sound decent in this song, but you're so smooth and soo apparently effortless. how long did it take you to memorize this and master it?!
+Brianne Dewey Oh... I took some time - it is not really so difficult - when You understand the harmony and see the music not from a perspective of composer - I am sure - You will have a lot of fun :) Many greetings and good luck!!
HORN PLAYERS FTW! ♥
did he crack a note in the opening phrase? welcome to the horn.....
Dear Szabolcs, my teacher wants me to put more lower lip in mouthpiece. I can't seem to find a mouthpiece large enough to get it in there. My upper register is weak. I have 2/3 upper, and lower 1/3 in the pink on lower lip. any suggestions?
good
