    Pipino was never the same after he was tamed by one of the greatest welterweight punchers ever, but Duran's abilities were on a whole other level and had freak natural abilities that alllowed him to move up in weight without losing much

    • @milojanis4901
      @milojanis4901 Před 4 měsíci +6

      Duran didn't really lose his power moving up in weight. But one thing he did partially lose was his ability to land those really hard punches. At least, against the top boxers. You can go up in weight, but reach stays the same. When Duran was matched against guys who would go inside and slug with him, they usually paid dearly for it. Davey Moore was one guy. And even at 37 years old, 35lbs over his prime weight, Duran put Iran Barkley on his ass, and took his championship. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that Duran is the greatest LW Champion ever. He also gets little credit for being a great defensive fighter. Leonard said after their first fight. "He is not an easy man to hit."

    • @eac1235
      @eac1235 Před 3 měsíci +7

      @milojanis4901 Imagine Leonard, Benitez, Hearns ,Barkley and Hagler at 135 pounds.....Duran goes through them like a hurricane in the tropics. Or the reverse....make Duran 5 ft 10 and a natural middleweight, same story. Roberto was a flyweight/Jr lightweight when he started in 1968.

      @@carlosalonso6309He DID beat Leonard, the only man to do so in Leonard's prime. Because he was furious that SRL got all the attention, and got paid millions more. Everyone can, and will, say what they want. But if Duran wouldve fought with that same killer intensity as he did in their first fight, he probably would've won their 2nd fight. I'm not convinced SRL fought the style he did in their first fight by choice. Duran was a master brawler, inside fighter, controlling, and cutting off the ring. Duran didn't press their 2nd fight like he did in their first. He got frustrated, and quit. So unlike Duran. More surprised he quit than if SRL would've KOd him......

    A lot of people complaining about the announcers favoring Cuevas but you have to remember. At this point in Duran’s career he was thought to be shot by a lot of people. He’d lost 3 of his last 6 fights and hadn’t knocked anyone out in 3 years. He’d been unimpressive in the fights he did win and seemed to have lost his motivation after the “No Mas” fight. Even this win over a badly faded Cuevas didn’t exactly convince everyone the old Duran was back but it did help him get the championship shot vs Davey Moore whom he battered from pilllar to post.

      Durán jamás gozo de popularidad entre gente como Al Berstein y Howard Cossell, además de que esa pelea se hizo en los Angeles que es una ciudad llena de mexicanos que obviamente odian a Durán y apoyaban a Pipino.

    The reason the announcers were so quick to sell Duran short is that he had looked poor in 3 straight fights. The loss to Benitez. The upset loss to Kirkland Laing. The boring decision victory over Jimmy Batten in Miami.
    Duran looked in those fights like a fighter past his prime and out of his weight.
