Hi, everybody. Ian Bremmer here. It is late, and we have just seen the first, maybe the last presidential debate of 2024. I was skeptical about the strategy from day one of Biden getting on stage with Trump. Biden has never been a great campaigner, doesn't have a lot of discipline, and isn't enormously entertaining. But they decided they needed to do it. And the rules benefited a normal politician. The microphones shut off, except for the person who was allowed to speak, and there was no live audience, and it was CNN. So the questions are going to be, at the very least, balance between the two. And, if there's going to be a slant, it'll be towards Biden and not towards Trump. And despite all of that, Biden got absolutely pasted.
And it's not about his speaking points per se; there were some points that he made, if you just look at the transcript, that clearly was in his favor, I would say, on balance, on the economy, his command of the facts was stronger than that of Trump. I saw that, in terms of talk of inflation and jobs. I saw that in terms of China and the trade deficit with China, that's actually narrowed as opposed to increased. Certainly, on abortion, I think that Biden would have landed more punches if you were only looking at the transcript. But no one is looking at the transcript. They're looking at the performance. And the performance, Biden was abysmal.
It wasn't just like a little bit on Trump's side. Trump looked vibrant. He actually, largely played by the rules. He sounded strong. He stuck to his time limit. And Biden looked and occasionally sounded incoherent. And the reality is that, I mean, Trump, in my view, shouldn't be running because he's unfit for being president. Biden shouldn't be running because he is too old to stand. And of the two challenges, the latter looks a lot worse on the debate stage that 50 plus percent of Americans just watched. The inbound that I've been receiving over the last two hours from people all over the world is overwhelmingly: "Is Biden now going to stand down? What is going to happen?" Because this is the worst evening, certainly of his campaign, and the level of pressure to find someone, anyone else other than Biden, to run is going to be strong.

Here we go again: Biden stands for sick people, getting them better healthcare. He stands with women and wants them to have the healthcare they deserve. He stands with working people and we now have the lowest unemployment in decades. Repairs to roads, airports and bridges is going on all over the country - thanks to the Infrastructure Bill. Ian is always capable to be critical on surface but to convince the audience that bad is good. He admitted that the debate disaster is a threat to democracy, but conveniently ignored that the current situation is what the past democracy led to and also the part of it not outside of it. So democracy is bad, and bad horribly. The fact that any system leads to such two terrible candidates for the most powerful country is a joke, aka the failure of the democratic system.
So what is the alternative to democracy which means 'by the people?' I think we can agree that the candidates presented to us are generally tainted but it is hard to argue that this is a fault of democracy. Our issue is one of who controls who we get to vote for which is an issue of marketing and $$ required to put someone behind a podium and to market and broadcast that choice. The barrier to entry at higher levels of government invite corruption and special interests. My question though is what system avoids this? Historically there are rulers by birth, rulers ordained by god, rulers by force, and rulers by the people which includes tribal leaders, etc.
The fact that a convicted criminal, rapist and the leader of an insurrection is able to still stand on a presidential debate stage three years later is troubling and a sign of how corrupt the justice and political system has really become.

I was gratified Trumps debate acceptance with ALL THE RULES STACKED in Bides favor turned out so well for Trump.
There is no democracy in the West. The republican system is a privilege (private law) and privation regime that works on behalf of private property. It is a continuation of historical monarchal rule by plutocratic means. The public has no say in how its money is spent, in whether or not to wage war, whether or not to bail out criminal enterprises, or whether or not to turn militarized police forces on citizens peacefully protesting government policies. The public is kept in line with the most valuable tool of a republic-a monopoly on violence.
The function of voting in a republic is to rubber-stamp the whole preverse process. The most democratic thing that people can do together is stay home on election day. Call the whole system into question. Make it so obvious that they canât lie about it.
Joe Scarborough is gonna be the first person on live television to say it tomorrow morning. I hope he does! And not listen to anyone who talks him out of it.

People donât realize that just Coro and his wife were close personal friends with Trump before Trump decided to run for president. They used to go to his house in Florida all the time. But as soon as he decided to run for president, the media that made Trump decided to turn on him. I've been around old people at the end of their life several times before. I'm not convinced Biden will literally survive this term, let alone get to the next one. Biden's total motor function was that of an older person who should have been using a walker or wheelchair several years ago - the clip of him walking over to shake the hands of the moderators after the debate, shows a person who can't function without significant care and assistance. That's not someone who should be in that office, or charged with making descisions for 330MIllion people.

I had to turn it off for a while. I came back for the last 30 minutes, & it remained disastrous. WHY canât our 2 parties provide us with two fit candidates?
