Bad promotion I think. Also, they couldn't use the proper title of "A Princess of Mars" because the Asylum had used it for their cheap knock off starring Traci Lords as Dejah Thoris.

I worked in blockbuster when jc came out and people were coming into the shop telling me how crap theyd heard it was, we were like what are you talking about its awesome! The marketing was a cockup and advertising was shite well done Disney for screwing yourselves and the cast!
An active anti-JOHN CARTER OF MARS faction from the (then) new DisneyCorp boardroom ripped away the "OF MARS" portion of the working title as their first act. The fact that this video lays the blame for box-office non-performance at the feet of the un-promoted film itself, their ignored star, and a director that was hampered throughout production by micro-management shows yet another landmine being layed in the path to a sequel. It's not going to happen. Not with those know-nothing players at the top.

I quite enjoyed the movie, they put it out at the wrong time with the wrong movies.
There are 10 books in the series and I read them all. I liked the movie but it could have been better. Disney has a history of destroying everything they touch recently. Disney just doesn't seem to get what a movie should be by wokifying everything.
When the Lefties and commies got hired into the big financial institutions, they realized (by design, as it was the plan the entire time) that they, a tiny minority, could influence the masses by withholding funding for projects until they were assured that said projects would be made with the woke agenda front and center. The way we get our media and entertainment has changed...we need to fund projects ahead of production...crowd source funds for the movies and games that we want made for us, which will turn into block busters without the woke BS. I haven't seen so many shows or movies, or played the games, based on some of my favorite IPs, bc I didn't want to support the destruction of my stuff, which is how future woke trash is justified, but I am only one person...BOYCOT or be happy with what they give you next with the money you gave them for making 'modern audience' crap...

John Carter of Mars...the Kal El ( Superman) from Terra Planet😂 Great movie, I would watch it 1000 times without getting tired! I love it...I would love a sequel!
I enjoyed the movie, but key lines from the book, A PRINCESS OF MARS, never appeared on screen. For instance, early in the relationship Carter addresses Dejah as his Princess, a faux paus expressed in the book, which she took to mean as him expressing ownership, when he only meant it to honor her. Burroughs played with language and misinterpretations by characters in his books to dramatic effect. Dejah , in the book, later refers to him as, " my Chieftan", bringing it full circle. But the one critical line missing in the movie was one that goes to the character of John Carter. Whenever he is down and seemingly beaten, he would always say, " I Still Live "! I waited thru the whole movie for that line and ............. nothing !

DIZZY f'd over their own marketing with this film. I've loved this series for 42+ years and when I saw the first preview trailer I was ecstatic. Then there were MONTHS of nothing. I actually forgot about it, and when I remembered it again it was playing in $1 theaters. That is some seriously f'd up marketing. Not only did they screw over the film, they screwed over the career's of everyone involved.

Whatever the cause for John Carter having poor box office numbers it was not because of the movie. The movie was awesome. Everybody I know loved it. It is rewatchable, I can watch John Carter over and over . Whenever I give three choices of a movie to watch and I say John Carter everybody chooses John Carter. So I don't know what the problem was but like I said the movie was great
I had comics about John Carter of Mars, let alone having and reading the book about it by Edgar Rice Burroughs…I love this film, hoping they will make a sequel or another movie about it….waiting patiently for it to happen…👍❤️🙏🏼🇺🇸

Why didn't it succeed? Because the dopey Disney didn't accurately follow the book. They took bits and pieces of the first 3 books and cobbled together a mish mash. Absolutely terrible.

One of the best scientifiction movies ever.
John Carter, Warcraft, Jupiter Rising, Prince of Persia, 10,000 B.C. and The Guardians of Ga’Hoole all didn’t do too well either in the box office or the critics eyes. But to me, they were great and deserved sequels or TV series.

This movie wasn't popular then but it sure it is now, especially with people accepting that there are other lives out there and a Carter might exist somewhere on Mars 😊 looking forward to Carter 2

Disney pulled the plug on John Carter before it ever hit the movie theaters.
This was one of Disney's best movies ever made. The story line, characters, and production were suburb. I will watch it many more times.
Looking at the making of the film, it was clear that John Carter did not fail because of bad marketing. It fell because, no one then and no one now will let them know, the young sci-fi audience would always see major pieces in the film ask Star Wars, Lord of the rings, dune & Avatar knock off! Even though, it was the other way around. Even the ones who knew, still felt, like it was too familiar.
From the princess of Mars novels and comic books I read in the 70s, it was clear that the idea needed to be truly updated, for a 20st, century audience. Even the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie Total recall, used some of writer Edgar Rice Burroughs original ideas.

The first one was really good! It would be hard to beat the first one!
It was criticized for being derivative but this was the original source for many modern sci-fi tropes. People were expecting original fresh material when this movie was really a celebration of the origins of Science Fiction.
Underrated classic.

I'm an obsessive Edgar Rice Burroughs fan and was completely unaware of this film until now. I and others had few expectations of these books ever being brought to screen, after 110 years of unsuccessful attempts. The promotion of this movie, which does seem to live up to the promise of the Burroughs literature, faled to reach the fans of Edgar Rice Burroughs, in my opinion.

They’ll never be a sequel because the way Disney handled this. They didn’t follow the original storyline, the screenplay was shit plus Disney interference doomed this movie from the beginning. If you ever read the books, you’ll know what I’m talking about. They deviated from the original story so much, It would’ve been impossible to stay on track. I have all the books plus a couple of first additions and it truly breaks my heart because I’m such a fan. Such a waste.
Disney didn’t even market it and when it opened no more marketing at all. It’s so great.

Ditto, I picked up the books 42 years ago and have read the series half a dozen times at least. But yes, Dizzy mismarketed it for what-ever reason. Knowing them they decided it wasn't woke enough.

It did not meet with box office success because Disney clusterfucked the story. I had to wonder if the movie makers had ever even READ the story. This was NOT a story that should have ever even been ATTEMPTED by Disney. It was not intended to be a childrens movie.

This character is ERBs second to hit the screen. His biggest is , wait for it, Tarzan, for those not aware of either. I do believe another story did become reality with no major frontman. A futuristic wartorn world in a cold war.

I've watched this movie several times and will continue to do so. As a fan of Edgar Rice Burroughs and the John Carter series, I knew in advance that the movie titled "John Carter" was a Burroughs adaptation, but completely puzzled by the lack of "Of Mars" in the title or even any promotion that this was an adaptation of a book by one of the best-selling authors of all time, Edgar Rice Burroughs. A PRINCESS OF MARS, the first John Carter book, first appeared in magazine format in 1912. No mention of the film's release being the 100th anniversary of this novel.Then came the awful reviews which called the movie a rip-off of Star Wars and other film and book concepts -- only an excellent and informed reviewer in FORBES magazine made direct arguments against his fellow reviewers for not knowing that Burroughs was first on many accounts. I spoke with a number of people who had no clue of who John Carter was or even that the movie was a science fantasy film (and therefore, no curiosity to see it).
I think it was an origional Unique film. . . I enjoyed it . Was lucky to find it on DVD in the $5.00 bin at walmart.

Too bad we will never get 2 anytime soon. Didn't see this one in the theater (believe saw it on Az Prime). I actually liked it. Maybe someone will come with 2 one day, but by then, it will be using completely different actors unless AI gets to the point that it can make the movie without them. lol

Its a Disney film so it will definitely get different actors. If the story does continue, one or more of the main characters will be race swapped and I am sure the princess Dejah Thoris will become gay and expect a completely different story from the source material. It will be nothing like the original John Carter movie of 2012.

If the movie would have been advertised better and called "Princess of Mars" I think it would have been more of a draw for people who didn't know ERB and his amazing books about John Carter. The books were my first Science Fiction, my hubby would read a chapter to me just before sleep, then came the Shanarra series him reading to me kept the night terrors away.

The advertisement for the movie in my area was horrible. I knew about John Carter of Mars. As well as Edgar Rice Burroughs A princess of Mars. What I saw in advertising was never about Mars. Most of the advertisements were showing him as a cavalry officer which I wasn't interested in. I love the movie but Disney promoted and advertised it poorly.

I Think a really crappy marketing job because this was a really good movie. If Hollywood after like 5 times can finally figure out how to do Dune right then they can figure out this too.
Normally I would say this is awesome. What was Disney's track record, they're going to break it somehow. The same way they've done with Star Wars and Indiana Jones. So on so forth
