  • Some footage from this Saturday evening, wandering the southwest / south side of Chicago, starting with a view over the Belt Rwy of Chicago's massive Clearing Yard from the Pace #383 South Cicero bus. BRC SD38-2 #562 and a CITX SD40M-2 (former SD45) shove a train over the central hump into the west departure yard on the other side. Various BRC geeps and genset #211, and some CSX power wait below in the yard.
Later, Norfolk Southern C40-9Ws #9657 and 9132 lead a manifest out of Clearing and across CN's Grand Trunk Western. After it departs, two trains have been lined through the remotely-controlled interlocking into Clearing. Note the lunar aspect here. The first of the two trains takes the lunar signal and crosses the GTW. Graffiti-coated Union Pacific SD60M #2516 and UP SD90/43MAC #8045 lead what ended up being a relatively short freight, into the yard. Canadian Pacific AC4400s #9673 and 9559 lead an intermodal (probably from Toronto) bypassing the yard and headed up the 67th St Wye to eventually reach Bensenville Yard.
The last location of the evening is Wrightwood station on Metra's Southwest Service. No Metra action here, (there are only 3 in- and outbound trains on Saturdays on this line) but as this is also the east end of Norfolk Southern's ex-Wabash Landers Yard, there was some switching going on. NS high-hood GP38-2 #5129 positions a cut of doublestacks, then comes out as far as possible on the lead tracks before going back into the yard.
    ~Thanks for watching!~

I know the GT Elsdon Yard was a few miles north of Hayford, but the main tracks curved east a little north of 51st and they also had access to the Santa Fe Corwith Yard.

79th & Kedzie I used to live right there. Neighborhood is complete garbage now. All kinds of crazy shit happened on that viaduct you were filming on.

@TBirdSCIL The neighborhood isn't as nice as it used to be, but it's still relatively fine during the day. I've never had any trouble at Hayford.

@TBirdSCIL And yes I walked. I took the Pace 383 to Ford City Mall to the CTA #79 and walked from 79th & Central Park to the junction.

Do you know if the former Grand Trunk Western main has seen any traffic or any use anymore since the CN transferred usage to CSX north of Hayford Junction?

@TBirdSCIL I have been to Hayford a few times and never had any trouble.

any locals give you any trouble around Hayford? That neighborhood isn't the same it was 10-15 years ago. I assume you walked part of the way since you were on the Pace bus?

@Nachtwolf1 - Last time I was there I was verbally harassed by some local youths from their porch. No imminent danger...just incredibly annoying.

    I hate 2516's paint scheme.
