  • Sinthu Kosasih is a fifth year medical student in Shanghai, China hoping to match into orthopedic surgery. We go over why he decided to go to medical school in China (coming from Thailand originally), what a day is like in a Chinese medical school, and how medical training and the medical culture differs from America.
What specialty do you want to see covered in the next day in the life video? Let me know down in the comments!

More than likely, he attended a private school in Thailand where many English language instructors are American. Pronunciation was probably also reinforced through consumption of American media.

@David Cheney If you want to study Medicine in China do it now before it copies Philippines restricting practice of Medicine to Filipino(or Chinese in China) only. In Philippines, foreigners can not practice Medicine even when you have Philippines Medical license before the law was passed. I was born, grew up and educated in Philippines and have Philippines Medical license but due to not being Filipino can not practice Medicine in Philippines after the law was passed several years ago(retroactive law). I came to USA as exchange student and allowed to take US licensing exam and retired in USA as physician.

A very objective and a typical day of a doctor student in China. Coincidentally, I graduate from the same MBBS program, and career from residency to attending. It's true to see 70 patients in the morning, but we accomplish it cooperatively by a 2-3 doctors group. Now I move to the USA, try to achieve the M.D. and ph.D. If lucky enough I would restart residency here, and I will be able to thoroughly compare totally different medical systems between CHN and the USA.

While I think the "cost" argument for not attending a U.S. medical school is reasonably valid, I think there are other factors that probably contributed to that decision making process that aren't being discussed, such as: 1) Most U.S. medical schools don't accept non-U.S./Canadian applicants, requiring applicants to be citizens of the U.S. or Canada or be a U.S. green card holder. 2) Most U.S. medical schools will only accept academic prerequisites completed at an accredited college or university in the U.S. or Canada. 3) For the few international students accepted to U.S. medical schools (I would assume portion into MD/PhD programs), it may be very difficult for them to gain entrance into a non-FM residency as there are fewer residencies available than U.S medical graduates (yes, I think this is stupid too) and U.S. students receive preference in that selection process.
That is not to say that there aren't non-U.S/Canadian/green card holders at U.S. medical schools, I'm just saying the process is very difficult and should be a factor of consideration for anyone applying...which was probably the case here.
Again, the cost argument is a valid one...and I am genuinely interested as to where he plans to practice. He mentioned having "Chinese in your back pocket" but he appears to be Thai of Chinese descent...did he already speak Mandarin? Is he learning it in China while a medical student?
Again, final practice location is important because while some U.S. medical schools are expensive (there are also quite a few that are cheap by state or resources i.e. Mayo Clinic) but U.S. doctors are also the best paid in the world outside of the Netherlands and Australia. If I had to take a guess, I would assume he eventually ends up practicing in Australia where there is a significant Chinese demographic. Or maybe at an international hospital in Thailand where salaries of foreign trained doctors are higher than that of locally trained doctors.

People study Medicine wherever thay can get admitted to. American students go to Guadajara, Mexico in the past if they can not get into US school. Almost all come back to US to practice Medicine. To practice Medicine you need to pass the licensing exam, Philippines limit the practice of Medicine to Filipinos. You can not practice Medicine in Philippines if you are not Filipino citizen even if you were born there and have Philippines license prior to passage of the law. America allows Filipino to practice Medicine in USA without being US citizen. I was able to practice Medcine in US even before getting permanent resident status.

That may be so in high end/complex medical issues. But the shear number of people means young doctors can get case exposure quite quicly and that translates to more experience and accuracy in diagnosis.

okay, before you guys get super excited about studying medicine in China, hear something from me as an international student from China and right now studying medicine in the US. First, it's just hard to study medicine in another language, and Chinese is a pretty hard language to learn, that will already take you years after years before you can barely order a dish, and it is not used as commonly as the guy said in this video, Chinese is the most spoken language, yes, but, it is ONLY most spoken in China, Taiwan, some part of East Asia, and after that it's not even close to how useful Spanish is. Second, medicine in China is weird, doctors often have to order no evidence-based "Chinese traditional drugs" because that's profitable but do no good to the patients, and it's common to receive bribery called red pocket (收红包) and all the weird ranking systems with the communist party, not even talking about much medical knowledge and techniques are still like 20 years behind America, so if you study medicine in China, YOU WILL HAVE A HELL TIME MATCHING INTO AMERICAN RESIDENCY. Also, doctors in China are not well respected, and attacking or literally murdering doctors happens every year, all I want to say is, I would rather someone try Caribbean schools than go to China to study medicine there.
