Nice primer on Merieke. She has been my #1 commander for over 5 years and I have loved tuning her over the years. While this is a great primer it seems very all in on Merieke’s effect which is great but in my experience gets you targeted hard in multiplayer games. Getting stuck with a Merieke who has been removed 3-5 times can begin to get hard to cast. I’d like to offer a few lesser known synergistic budget options that I run. They offer additional threats to win by and play nice with all the untap effects:
King Macar, The Gold-Cursed ($0.38)
Arbiter of the Ideal ($0.30)
Mimic Vat, (recently reprinted) ($1.99)

i have had a mereke deck for a few years and wish i had seen a few of these untap methods in the past. i would like to point out though you can put multiple mereke triggers on the stack and take control of multiple creatures at the same time. You do this with freed or peppins or a creature with illusionist bracers. you tap merke declare target in response to the ability untap mereke, let untap resolve and use mereke again and continue to repeat the process. since none of mereks abilities had yet resolved her untapping doesn't cause them to die. Just wanted to point this out since it is a pretty cool interaction that can be done with her which in my opinion would make pemmin's become your golden pig.

Yeah, I take advantage of this with things like Rootborn defence (giving my team indestructible for the turn), and just respond to all the Destroy Triggers with tapping and untapping her, then blanket casting it and gaining control of all the creatures, while having a spell in hand that often saves the Commander =D

Wouldn't her trigger enter the stack and destroy the creature before you get control thrn?
I've heard, that you can gain control on 2 and more creatures with this commander. You have to untap her via any untap effect in response to her ability, and then immediately tap her again, targeting another creature. The first creature isn't supposed to die from this, because the ability, that will get it under your control is still not resolved.
I think that is actually correct from what I have heard recently!

Effectively, her ability uses the stack. If you can untap her before her effect resolves, you can snag lots of fun stuff:)
I think y’all should cover “Ertai, the corrupted” he cost 2 generic mana and Esper, his effect is “pay a blue and tap, sacrifice a creature or enchantment: counter target spell” I think he’s a great budget commander because black rewards you for sacrificing creatures, allowing for etb and enter the graveyard effects, added with blues ability to counter spells and untapping effects is a real combo, and I mainly use white to destroy or exile permanents on my opponents side of the deck over all I built my deck for not too much. I think the color combo allows for really interesting gameplay!
The one dislike on this video is probably from a guy who was super savaged by merieke

This deck is a tough one to win with if your opponents are playing anything slightly more focused. She’s super killable here and the lean into tap and untap gets a bullseye on you.

Suggestions for upgrades: Intruder Alarm pretty much locks the board, and Glaring Spotlight can double up on getting rid of Hexproof on your opponents or protecting your own for a turn.

Possibly my favorite card ever printed. Have had a Merieke deck sense she was printed. Probably my fav commander. Not my pods tho lol. A vary important thing you forgot to mention tho is "I untap in response to....." and take multiple creatures in 1 go. Also, Avacyn. Not really sure were she falls in the upgrades but making things indestructable should be at least mentioned. Resolving the Angel usually leads to group scooping. And......Empress Galina....
Also, when playing Merieke. Even if you can. Don't cast her without protection. Grieves, boots, champions helm, counter spell. Whatever. People don't like it when you take there shit. I play Merieke AND Memnark. You start jacking people stuff and you become Arch Enemy in a hurry.
Lastly, some take control of target creature from any graveyard spells and put them into play are also handy.
Oh, and a card that has saved my ass many times: Neurok Stealthsuit scryfall.com/card/td2/25/neurok-stealthsuit
Not Ideal on Merieke. However the UU ability is instant speed and can save any of your untapers or utility critters (Empress Galina) till you run out of blue.

Very cool. I would only add a King Macar the Goldcursed in there; to deal with the creatures that are too dangerous to keep around or have death triggers that are too dangerous to risk.

Now, this is a deck that I haven't seen before. It looks surprisingly interesting, but it seems like it might have difficulty if you can't grab the right bombs.
Definitely works better when you can get to those powerful cards
The high number of comes into play tapped lands will make the deck feel short on mana for a long time and make it hard to act on opponents turns if playing new stuff or replaying the commander.
Some Interaction seems a little expensive at 3CMC and should be stuff that is 1-2 CMC and maybe should be something that costs a little more mana but could be paid for up front and then does whatever it does for no mana after that. Cards like Seal of Cleansing, Sin Collector, Bottomless Pit, and Aura of Silence. Which also deal with non-creature spells by the way.
People wanting to build this who have untapped 2+ color lands should of course use them if they have them instead of the lands that get tapped basics or 2 color lands that enter tapped.

I dont think intruder alarm triggers when control changes.
@@828burke no, it doesn't trigger when you take control, but it triggers everytime a creature etb. This way, you can destroy 1 creature on board for each creature that etb. It's super good, especially with all your other tap ability (draw / generate mana / etc). If you have a good board state, you gonna get so much advantage, it's ridiculus. Personnaly, I play Zur the Enchanter, so I can tutor for Intruder Alarm, Freed From the Real, Fanatical Devotion, or any source of protection for Merieke (or zur). People don't like Zur as the commander, but in the 99, it's quite usefull!

One creature for your #9 section to permanently keep creatures is Quicksilver Elemental, it just takes B to copy any target creatures activated ability until end of turn 😃😃😃

Attaching Illusionist bracers to a creature that has "tap: to untap creature" would be much stronger than on the commander. Unlimited mana from mana rocks or semi field wipe with commander

How is Pemmin's Aura not the golden pig? Not only can it protect your commander the whole game you can use its untap ability and hold priority to take all your opponents creatures in one swoop

Just sayin, dromar's cavern is a great land that taps for blue black and white and it's less than 1 dollar
A good land! But it's technically mana disadvantage since it sets you back 1 turn land wise
@@TheCommandersQuarters true but it fixes your mana and in a pinch can be tapped then sacrificed as it doesn't enter tapped. I personally think the lairs are super underrated in commanders with 3+ colors to them

Any chance you could do a budget enchantment deck that revolves around star field nyxs mechanic? There are a lot of decks for that card but so expensive. Need a budget version.

Dumb questions, but... When Merieke taps and takes control of an opponent's tapped creature, does the creature remain tapped until my next upkeep? Does this newly controlled creature have summoning sickness? Sorry if these are really amateurish questions.

Hey I’ve got an unrelated question, but how do you build a 5 color mana base on a budget.

@@TheCommandersQuarters yah i was going to try to build a budget slither deck but after watching your jodah video i'm not so sure it would be possible to build seeing as id have to cut so many slithers to build the ramp and card draw in it. i only wanted to build it cause i pulled a chromatic lantern recently and noticed you can get the proxie versions of the slither commanders for cheap. i also thought the bounce lands, tri lands, and signets would be enough to make it work, not to mention the tapped fetch lands are cheap.
