  • Bought this tractor used and even after adjustment of the PTO linkage, still seem to get some slippage...anyone know what is going on and how to fix this? You can hear the mower surge to full speed after the lever has been thrown.

Andy, How much work was it to replace the PTO clutch? Do you have to split the case or can it be without?

I want to preface this statement with the fact that i have did not have any previous experience with clutch work but i found this job to be fairly simple. I drove the tractor on to ramps to help give me enough space under the tractor, removed the 6 bolts on the PTO cover, pulled the pto unit out (helps to move the PTO lever up and down) and replaced it with a new one i purchased from messicks. The instructions that came with the new PTO were clear and made it an easy job.

Hello, what do you mean by the PTO clutch? Do you mean the gear box on the deck itself? Thank you if you can clarify this,my G2160,,60 inch deck is doing the same thing,THANK YOU.

Mark Brad no, not the gearbox on the deck itself. If you follow the linkage from the yellow handle, it’s the clutch that the lever activates, the PTO clutch.

Andy,THANK YOU for letting me know this. The tractor is at my daughters, they left it with the house, and I have a John Deere, and could not understand why it was taking so long for the blades to get going, and seemed to lag in deeper grass, and you would think this deck should kick some butt. When I get back to the house,I will check it out and let you know. With the clutch issue, what is this going to cost my wallet,or is a adjustment I can try before going through a tear down until I need to.THANKS ,I appreciate when fantastic people like you reply with issues with our stuff. So if no adjustment,I need to get involved and replace the clutch and parts, correct,if not adjustment. Thanks brother,Mark

Andy, one more question,if you don't mind me asking, about how much was it for the PTO? I am sure I can do it,but I am afraid to call and get a price, thank you again,Mark

      Kubota K1253-94022 (KIT CLUTCH, PTO ) Quantity: 1 $398.33 each $398.33 - www.messicks.com
This was the part that i installed, made it work perfectly. To answer your previous question..there is an adjustment. At the base of the linkage, there is a spring with a nut on the bottom, you can tighten that to see if it will engage the PTO sooner...that may help you to avoid the $$ and labor.

Thank you Andy,I was just looking at the owners manual, there are 2 belts in the front and there is a cable a 2 springs that you can adjust,I have a G2160,but it seems they probably work on the same principle. The Tractor is at my Daughters house as she has 9 acres, half of which is hay for the horses,I am going to run over there and take a look at the adjustments, and make sure the belts are not loose, then I will diagnose it from there. Thanks again,it took my wife 2 days to find the manual, now this may help out some what seeing where everything is,,Thanks Andy, will update you when I get her fixed and see if it is the same problem,,Take care, thanks for the help and some ideas..,Mark

For anyone who still reads this post, here’s a piece of information for you. I have had all kinds of trouble with the glide steering system on mine. Another problem for later.
But as far as this problem you folks are discussing, here’s what happened to me. I started cutting my grass and upon engaging the PTO, it didn’t so anything. I parked my mower at that point. I was sick and tired of replacing glide steer cables 2 or 3 times a year. Very time consuming and expensive. The PTO problem sealed the deal. I went and picked out a new JD mower and set up delivery COD. When I returned home my son whose wife had used it a few days earlier, was under it looking at what caused the PTO to fail. I mounted the mower and he wanted me to start it and try the PTO again. As I did everything worked perfectly!
He said his wife had hit a hole about 18” deep when she cut my yard. The tire bottomed out and the deck slapped the PTO controls against the frame of the mower. After he straightened them out, everything was aligned and it worked. So please don’t forget something causing this to happen.
I canceled the JD. I love the Kubota diesel and this mower. However Kubota has fought me tooth and nail about their pee poor engineering design for the glide steer system. Mine was one of the first. I bought it in 2007. Of course they wouldn’t stand behind any breakage of the cables. And they want to put them on for you for a price as high as the ISS ! Now they make a replacement kit that will take the place of the cables. The one like the new GR-2021’s have. But only if you pay $300 for it.
Now I am disabled and crippled from 5 back surgeries. I can still cut my grass with this mower. But I paid $7900.00 for it new. I have bought countless cables and just replaced the gearbox on the deck. That was new $1800.00!!! I finally got them to rebuild my gearbox for $300.00. Much better!!! It’s been a long haul for me but I love that Diesel engine. But there’s more parts than it.
Sorry for a drawn out complaint, but if anyone has any suggestions, remarks, etc I’d really appreciate your feedback! God Bless you all!!

What cables specifically are you referring to?. I have a GR2110 like you.

I know how to make the glide steer cables last for many years. My friend sold me this tractor and he put a small hole in each glide steer boot. He would, and I still do, squirt wd-40 inside the boot every month. This greatly reduces the friction of the cables moving in the metal sheath. This tractor has had the same cables for 7 years with hard use and no cable breakages.

It ended up being a worn out clutch, replaced it and works good as new again. Thanks for the reply!!
