The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Still Drives Great, but is that Enough?

  • I review the refreshed 2021 Volkswagen Atlas in its SE w/ Technology trim level which gets new styling front and back along with a new steering wheel. The Atlas still drives great, with an eager and sporty feeling and is still one of the best handling 3-row SUVs in this segment. But in the 3 years since the Atlas debuted, some new competitors have arrived with more features and nicer interiors for the same money, making the Atlas harder to justify now. What do you think of the 2021 Atlas? Thanks to Volkswagen for providing this Atlas to review.

    I just got a 2021 atlas. Its very nice and we are happy with it. We wanted a Palisade but here in cali its 4 to 6K over msrp so was not going to pay for that.

    Great Review! When they would sell this for that price in Europe it would sell really well. I guess VW just prefers to sell the more costly cars like the Touareg here instead. For people who just need space and practicality, it would be a good choice out of the VW lineup here.

    Took it out for a test drive with the wife and we love the drive and how smooth it is. The interior could use some work on say higher end looking materials. Went with this over the telluride due to better awd system and the long ass wait times for getting a telluride. Also I think the atlas looks better with the r line package which makes the panels body colored. Was not a huge fan with the amount of plastic cladding on the outside of the vehicle. I guess we will settle for the plastic on the inside lol

    well matt, a surprisingly happy atlas review. i am not a vw person, but i do like their simplicity over others.
    and i wish i could get the higher models in cloth seats. i will do a build on-line to see if possible.
    can i ask, the awd, is it torque vectoring? is it similar to the mazda where breaks are used instead?

    • @MattMaranMotoring
      @MattMaranMotoring  Před 3 lety +1

      AWD uses brake-based torque vectoring. Only the the Pilot has real torque vectoring.

    My wife recently just bought this r line model in white at Cochran. Love the sound of the VR6 in it. It’s a damn shame this is the only model VW offers the VR6 in!! I want a refreshed Passat GT with the VR6.

    often wondered why subaru is able to give us the slimmer a pillar and not others.
    in fack, subaru and a few others give great glass vision all around.
    and for instance, why did ford make the edge's a pillar thicker with the mirror and allow the nautilus to put the mirror on the door and giving the window for a better view.
    i mean, they all have the same top regulations, strenth-wise, right?

    • @MattMaranMotoring
      @MattMaranMotoring  Před 3 lety +1

      Don’t know about the others but Subaru says they use more high-strength steel in the A-pillar and roof, allowing them to have a narrower A-pillar.

    and one last thought...the mazda cx9, as well as sooooo many cars these days, have their grills poking out over where bumpers used to be.
    the atlas AT LEAST HAS A BUMPER HERE.
    is there any explanation you can give us for this.
    how can any insurance company not raise rates when everything delicate will be the first things broken in the slowest of front end collisions!? the average cost to repair a car today must be astronomical.
    when did regulations allow for cars to place chrome and plastic grills out-front of any bumper protection???

    • @MattMaranMotoring
      @MattMaranMotoring  Před 3 lety +1

      Insurance rates stay reasonable because auto emergency braking is usually standard now, preventing those minor collisions that the bumper used to protect against.

    No, it's not enough. I want to like it, but it is so cheap feeling inside, I have never felt so much cheap plastic in a car. I am sure it would only cost a manufacturer $100 to upgrade the materials inside so it feels like a quality vehicle. Unfortunately, they didn't and now they have a rental fleet special.

    mileage.
    very disappointing. always has been with the atlas. is it the weight? it's not heavier than the korean offerings, is it?
    but really, i will always be skeptical of the real mileage on a car in the hands of an enthusiast...you folks always tend to enjoy the sportier driving.
    you don't drive like you have a bowl of soup in your lap!!!

    • @JT-fq2bl
      @JT-fq2bl Před 3 lety

      The problem with the Atlas is a combination of weight and old engine technology of the VR6. You can get better fuel economy and 0-60 mph time with the TSI 4, but you have to deal with carbon buildup and that motor might not last long hauling all that weight. The Pally/Telly twins are lighter (better 0-60 mph times), and the engines are dual port Injection while running in Atkinson mode part-time under light throttle.

    • @paulpellico3797
      @paulpellico3797 Před 3 lety

      @@JT-fq2bl agree..very disappointed the atlas brought this V6 to the atlas.
      not so sure about your point on the 4 cyl. perhaps you can show where the modern 4 cyl turb DI engines are having these problems.
      i was told that long ago and yet my 2010 3.5 twin turbo mks, with 105,000 miles on it is running clean and powerful.
      and so many, even luxury suvs, are getting the 4 cylinder turbo as base motors.
