  • A standout hit for Shudder, Late Night With The Devil (2024) plays with the mockumentary style to deliver a tense and taught story with creepy parallels and blink and you'll miss it scares. Cameron Cairnes & Colin Cairnes wrote and directed an attention grabbing horror in the style of 'Ghostwatch' (1992) and with a dash of 'Grave Encounters'.

I liked it. Just wished they had stuck with the found footage format. Less editing, more characters speaking barely audible dialogue off screen with subtitles

That seems to be a common take, I do know think the switching between formats could have been done better. What was the last 11/12 horror film you saw?

Haven't seen all of VHS 2 but i really liked the Safe Haven segment. Premise is about a documentary crew go to film inside a suspected cult in Indonesia and then hell is literally let loose. Directed by Gareth Evan's director of the Raid movies. Evan's background of creative camera work and depicting violence lend themselves well to horror. Evan's would go on to direct the horror movie Apostle in 2018 with Dan Stevens.

Ah right - I do know of Evans, he does shoot violence wit ha great sense of urgency and impact. Apostle was a really interesting one, some creative set pieces and restraint helped it stand out.

I was underwhelmed with this film. It's been way overhyped for what it is--a competent low budget horror film. There was nothing particularly shocking or surprising about the script. If you asked me to guess where the film would go based solely on the trailer, I could have got you to the end with 85-90% accuracy. I also agree with the comment about the found footage/mockumentary framing device--I think the film would have been much better off without it, especially with the hypnosis gimmick. Overall i like the premise of the film much more than the reality. I'm curious to see if you two can sway me, though. I respect your opinion and analysis a lot.
