    My great-grandfather fought for Austria-Hungary.
    His father had left Russia for Austria, so he spoke fluent Russian.
    After being captured by a squad of Russians while on night duty, he was brought to a Russian PoW camp. The warden didn't know German, and was trying to tell a group of Germans to give their names to him.
    After about a day, he decided to speak up, telling the warden he knew Russian and German, and could help him if he was put in better quarters. The warden agreed. For most of the war, he was translating orders for the warden to new prisoners. At one point he even convinced the warden to let the Germans have Christmas free from work. When the Bolsheviks took power, a small force was sent to the prison, and told the Germans in Russian, "you are no longer at war with Russia. All prisoners must leave immediately".
    My great-grandfather and about 150 other German and Austrian prisoners had to walk their way through the Russian civil war and back to their homes.

    • @ZORO12ful
      @ZORO12ful Před 7 lety +1523

      Yeah, this is the problem with mapping this war. While it looks very nice, it doesn't accurately represent the military situation.
      For example: Germany's army tried one last offensive in 1918 and although it got some land, it was completely exhausted. The French, British and the Americans were thoroughly trashing them until the German generals got the idea and gave up.

    • @ZORO12ful
      @ZORO12ful Před 7 lety +1006

      Shanks
      Not really. The German Spring Offensive failed, after that, the war could only go down the drain for the Central Powers.
      The American troops had a significant contribution in shortening the war, but by August 1918 the German army was completely exhausted and its population in a state of starvation.
      The longer the war would go, the higher the chances of the Spartacist uprising being successful and Germany forced out of the conflict.

    • @Olafmikli
      @Olafmikli Před 7 lety +181

      It is kind of bizarre to me that they lose one offensive and then unconditionally surrender instead of have fair terms.

    • @ZORO12ful
      @ZORO12ful Před 7 lety +591

      +Olaf Mikli
      It wasn't just that. The map does not accurately represent the German situation at the time.
      First, the German allies were knocked out of the war. While they weren't the best, their theatres kept numerous Entente forces occupied.
      Second, the German government was on the verge of collapse. The economy was down the gutter since it never correctly adopted a war economy.
      The people were starving because of the RN blocade.
      The Communists were gaining traction. The main reason why the Spartacist revolt was quelled was because of the influx of battle hardened soldiers following the German surrender.
      Third, while Germany did technically own Ukraine and large swathes of land in the east, it couldn't administer them properly. *The people didn't want the Germans there*. Over 1 000 000 troops were needed in the east after the Russian surrender in order to keep the new territories pacified.
      Fourth, the German army was exhausted. The spring offensive was its last dying breath. The reason it failed was because it couldn't sustain to supply its quickly advancing soldiers.
      The Entente started pushing back, the American army entered Europe and it was game over.
      The Entente could've easily pushed deep into Germany, but by that time it too was exhausted from such a brutal war and it took the German offer for peace.
      The UK and France could have never known that the Germans would be so angry that they would believe any conspiracy theory a madman would shove down their throats.

    When you watch the end of this video you can catch a slight grip of the humiliation Germany felt at the end of WWI and how the "knife at the back of the nation" myth got so popular. When you look at the territorial gains, it looks likes Germany is winning, it made Russia surrender, took big chunks of its territory, yeah the Brits defeated the Ottomans, took them long enough, but on the Western front Germany was still inside France when they surrendered. How often do you hear of that in a war- you catch the enemy's territory, couldn't be moved for years, and you surrender your territory instead. What the generals knew and the public didn't was that there is no way Germany could sustain the war for much longer, especially not when the fresh US army has joined and Germany's allies surrendered. They wanted to avoid what later happened at the end of WWII- allied forces in Berlin, the annihilation of Germany. Lloyd George, if I'm not mistaken, wanted to keep the fighting, said that the Germans would never believe they have lost if they wouldn't see the allied armies marching in Berlin with their own eyes. History would prove him right. France have lost the most out of the allied forces, wanted to cut their loses early and punish Germany severely. Another reason for WWII.

As a proof of that, you can see what our soldiers did to the English army at Alamein, resisting without weapons and food for days; indeed we were given the military tributes for our bravery. At the time they were both young nations that sent many men off to war, many of which died in the trenches and beaches of Gallipoli, it’s still something that defines both nations, and ANZAC day is widely respected in both countries. This would have also been significant for the Turkish people too, to have your homeland invaded by a foreign force that you were told to fear would have been a nightmare for the people, let’s not forget the many young Turks that died at Gallipoli too, they fought just as valiantly as the ANZAC forces.

      Austria-Hungary had to fight on 3 fronts, but without allies (1 vs 1), Serbia would have lost. They had only about 400K troops while Austria had over millions. It's amazing how much different the beginning of the war was from the ending. In 1914 and early 1915, old fashioned cavalry-on-cavalry and infantry-on-infantry battles were still the norm, even with trench warfare settling in. But after that, other than the odd cavalry charge or infantry charge "over the top", it had become dominated by trench warfare as technology favored defense over offense. It wasn't until airplane and tank technology improved that there were any breakthroughs. Cavalry still had a few limited advantages over tanks and airplanes, which is why it continued to be used to an extent all through the war, even in the early days of WWII, but by summer of 1915, the days of marching into battle alongside a band loudly announcing your presence were done for.

  • @alexcopley2512

    Ah, WW1, the war which destroyed the optimism of Europe, the idea of absolute rule, and balance of power in Europe, which from 1918 on saw a vacuum in Central/Eastern Europe, allowing for the extremists in the stronger countries on the fringe of this vacuum (Russia and Germany) to take advantage.
    I can't help but imagine what the world would be like if the war had ended by Christmas. For starters, no matter which side that one, the peace would've been less harsh. Much less damage and human loss would occur, and ultimately there would've been no "stab in the back" as Hitler called it if Germany lost. Germany's armies would've been thoroughly crushed by the end of the "five month war". It's very likely many monarchies would survive the war, most notably the Russian monarchy. Also a survivor, the Ottoman Empire, which would've had no chance to join so quick a war, historically joining in late October, which at that point would see the Central Powers on the run (in the scenario I'm describing). The Turks wouldn't join so disastrous a conflict. Italy wouldn't have felt betrayed, the Treaty of London was signed in 1915. The real question would be the status of Austria-Hungary and Germany. The Austrians would probably have seen some instability, perhaps the empire would've collapsed anyway. The Germans would probably liberalized their nation, adopting a British model, or something similar. Overall, there would be less revanchism in the peace conference, France regaining Alsace-Lorraine, Belgium gaining the Eupen region, Russia gaining parts of Prussia and Galicia, Serbia gaining minor concessions or even Bosnia. The reparations would be few, and payable, and disillusionment would've been limited to few. Be interesting to see what you would make of a scenario, EmperorTigerstar *wink wink*.
    And then there's the Central Power victory, for those of you still reading. A similar scenario would've happened overall. Minor land concessions on the behalf of the allies, with Luxembourg, and Belgium and France up to at most the Meuse being annexed. In Russia, Poland would be annexed, or granted independence, depending on how the Germans handled the situation. In the south, Serbia would be puppetted, and the southern half annexed into a friendly Bulgaria, regardless of their intervention. Italy would've been revisited, and certain punishments would be placed on their disloyal ally. The Ottomans would've annexed parts of the Caucasus, all of Kuwait, and the Sinai, or even all of Egypt. The domestic repercussions would be felt hardest in Russia, the Czar's position even weaker. However, the communists wouldn't rise, as there would be no political or military need to send Lenin to Russia. Russia's fate would depend on German intervention, which if it occurred would preserve the absolute monarchy. Otherwise, a constitutional monarchy or even a republic would form based off of western lines. In France, the shock of a second defeat to Germany might result in the rise of extremist groups, such as Fascists or Communists. In Britain, it is unlikely such a thing would occur. Britain would've lost less of consequence, and at most the colonies would be unstable (mostly India).
    And that's my analysis of the alternatives of an early victory. If there are any other theories based off of this, feel free to suggest them, or even debate what I put, and why. Thanks for reading my wall of text.

    • @alexcopley2512
      @alexcopley2512 Před 9 lety +1

      And the likely point of divergence in the Entente victory would be Tannenburg, and the divergence in a Central Power victory would be the Marne.

    • @alexcopley2512
      @alexcopley2512 Před 9 lety

      WW2 as we know it wouldn't happen. There would be no Anti-Semitic Fuhrer in Germany, no "stab in the back" the public morale wouldn't have been nearly as broken as in 1918. There would be no massive democratic revolution, no mutinies. One side would've been thoroughly beaten, not lost because their citizens protested so. If Russia entered Berlin, Wilhelm would have given up, same if Germany entered Paris. If anything WW2 would be caused in a similar way to the first world war, or maybe even like the Franco-Prussian War.
