I've tandem jumped. We fell for 30 seconds with the smaller chute deployed before deploying the main chute. The smaller chutes purposes are stability/maintaining (as already mentioned) and slowing the speed.

If you’re deploying the parachute immediately that’s not sky diving it’s just jumping out of a plane.
I believe that was a pilot chute meant to keep them stable, maybe, I’m no skydiver.

You can do it this way first, but getting out on your own, the first time is a lot more intense.
