  • Abandoned rescue horse is difficult and dangerous! For year now everyone has to be careful around this abandoned rescue mare.. Taking blood is very tricky but is a must to diagnose the problem!

Vets train for many years and this vet has horses herself. However, she isn’t a horse expert who has dedicated decades to understanding horse behaviour. I know that sounds a bit harsh, but I thought the vet was a bit of a know it all. At least the job got done and the horse wasn’t too stressed. I think that was mostly to do with the work Steve put in beforehand.

100% agreed. Shame the vet wasn't able to listen and work collaboratively with another expert. Hopefully she'll be able to do some self reflection and acknowledge that her "spending time" would not have been enough without Steve's input. But I doubt she has the confidence to do so at the moment.

Very true. I've found, in general, that many people don't treat rescue horses the same as they treat others.
I get it, the horse has been abused/neglected, so they don't want to "abuse" it more.
However, these horses need the same rules as the rest. They're actually much happier and more relieved when they can look to the human as the leader. The herd leader will keep them safe in their world.
I try to live by the adage of treat them like the horse you want them to be.
It still surprises me after many years, that some vets and farriers are not horsemen. They've learned their craft, but they haven't spent years/time with horses learning the ways of the horse. That's what separates decent from outstanding.

@@tracyjohnson5023 What a lovely message. I also subscribe to the black horses channel with rescue friesians. The work they do is so wonderful. Their love, patience and understanding of the amazing breed is inspiring. They are training a young Friesian called Nero who arrived in November. He was considered dangerous and was going to be put to sleep. If I remember rightly the owners loved him, but just couldn’t afford the work needed. Black horses took him in and he is cheeky, but they are working so hard on his manners and I just can’t believe he was considered dangerous. He just needed some medical treatment and training.

As veterinarians, we are trained and work very hard to treat a multitude of physical ailments in animals. We are expected to be all things to everyone, regardless of the species and for the most part we are. Our focus is not to train troubled horses that may cause injury to ourselves and take up the time we need to help patients. That being said, my forte has always been saving the horses that people have traumatized, but I did so by buying them and making them a part of my family. I was even told once by a 3 day trainer that I needed to "move along" my new rescue at the time, and that he was "dangerous" by others.
I had him for over 20 years, he would lay down his heart for me, and never got a harsh word, or whip, or anger from me.
I'm a small animal vet, and I do follow Steve's training principles which have been so helpful with my Shire x TB baby that I got as a 9 month old. He's 2 now, huge, and a sweet gentle "old soul" and I give the credit for that to Steve.,.not because I'm a veterinarian, who should "know it all." as some of the posts here have hinted at about vets. Everyone needs help at some point with something, and I applaud those who ask for it.

With people as with animals, if they're busy talking or looking elsewhere they're not paying attention. If they're not paying attention it's impossible to work together. If you're not working together, it's sheer luck to get anything done. All I can say is this vet only was able to accomplish what she did because YOU were there & had already instilled some training (enough to know what got the mare's attention & make her willing to cooperate: food.) The vet (while I don't doubt her competency,) was too busy talking to absorb what you were saying. Luck was on her side. Nothing more. Just my 2cents.

I hope she sees this video (and others that you have done) and realize this is all about the horse not anyone else. I know nothing about horses except what I've learned from you! However what you said about the horse disconnecting from you and connect with the food makes so much sence. I've actually seen this with our beagle over the years. He's all about the food to much so. That he is whining constantly for food everytime my sister sits down to eat. However he doesn't with me because i stopped feeding him when i eat. Now he waits for me to call him when I'm ready to give him a rub before he gets anything from me. Also he knows at 8pm. I will give him a treat for a trick and somehow he knows when it's 8, 😅 If he does come early i tell him its not time and he goes off and comes back later. I have also used putting him back behind me because he was pushing me at the door before I could open it. I'm in my 70s and was worried about him tripping me. Now he waits back behind me and waits until i open for him. Thank you for your insights!❤

Im 65, as a 7/8 yr old child, i was blessed to be indoctrinated into horses in the flesh. I was obsessed since i was a baby. Funny enough my Mom raised in Edinburgh during the 2nd w.w., had come to america sponsered by a judge and his wife to be a proper nanny. My mom met my dad at one of the many military sponsored dances , she was in scarsdale new york. After much long distance courting , after a few years she was persuaded to marry him and relocated to s.f. bay area. If there is past lives, i lived it as a horse. San francisco presidio milatary base, adjacent to golden gate park had the only boarding facility left in san francisco. Across the golden gate bridge was tennessee valley stables. The owner of that stables had a lease that followed the shore line from just past fort cronkite , another milatary basejust north of golden gate. The land lease extended 20 mi. North From pacific oceans edge and 5 mi. Inland. Whiteface herford beef were on the 1st approx.10mi. N., the stable, house, dairy barn which milked up to 113 cows 2 xs a day w haybarn, calf shed. Ect. And access road to beach 2 mi. To west. Basically dead center of 20 mi n to s. . Dairy cows bred and not milked grazed on the n.next approx. 10 mi. My mom managed the drug store, maureen giannecchini managed the ajacent grocery. George her husband, and her boys managed , milked, fed the dairy herd, & managed the 45 head of horses at the boarding facility. He was a native italian immigrant. My mom told maureen about my obsession w horses. My mom was now a single mom w 2 kids and no family in sight. Her family embraced me, her youngest a girl Barbara, was petite n shy. I was a exuberant and over the moon to have the privilege to be included every week end over night, to help...got dairy herd in for milking, cleaned house did laundry, help feed horses 2x's day. Helped make meals for 4 boys , dad n us. In exchange, George made sure i had a horse to ride. We couldn't afford lessons, but i never missed one. Sitting on the sidelines and taking it all in. Very few kids had horses there, woman like Maria Callas famous opera singer and who had a long time affair w Onassis before Jackie O. Boarded her horse there among many amazing loving and knowlegable horse owners. Most of them women. George went to a little stock auction frequented by many Portuguese & italian ranchers in a tiny stock yard in the hills of sausilito...the last of its kind. He bought many horses that didnt look like there was no chance fòr them due to health damage, and rehabilitated them. He normally would turn them out in the huge pasture lands on n. dairy side. Leave them be, let them be a horse, there were a few retired horses boarded w in that herd. He would bring them in after 6, 8, 12 mo. And his oldest, and myself, and his daughter would start dealing w them. He would watch, as he would everything around him, and advise accourdingly. I rode and learned from the horses and loving horse owners surrounding me. One year , i was 9 or 10 they gave me my own bay filly. Looking back on what i know now, i'm sure she was a mustang. However, in time she developed and looked liked a small throughbred. She was barely halter broke, and we grew up together. Somebody then told me during this time that as a horseman...one never asks a horse to do something which he/she could hurt themselves. I was to access all of my requests with discernment. Think ahead of what could possibly go wrong, because if it did the trust i had worked so hard to acheive would be lost in that instance. It was all about being responsible, and deserving of the leadership role i was demanding of the horses. Many horses at the auction had been ruined by non horsemen owners. Backyard horses handfed into being opportunist bully monsters who were on their way to slaughter due to human ignorance. Not one of them was with out behavioral or health issues to which effected their ability to be managed safely. It has been in my blood to always work w horses others had given up on, or who had been exploited to their detriment. I'm still there, advocating for america's wild herds being decimated by helicopter round ups in 100+ degree heat, and shipped to canada n mexico for slaughter and consumption in china, japan, italy, spain, etc. Ect. No animal ptotection organizations will stand up to the govt agency , the bereau of land management, tasked w their welfare in accordance with the 51 year old wild horse and burro act passed in 1971. It is a corrupt cruel unacceptable rouge agency who's practises and protocols are illegal ( if private citizens were caught doing this, they would do prison time) but are getting away with stuff that is in direct opposition from the directive of the purpose of their agency. People to distracted w the breakneck pace and the zoo that has become washington. Advocates soliciting washington are sent the same canned letter responses...thanks for your interest, blah, blah, blah. Willie nelson is the only celeb. Stepping up to the plate adopting a herd of 90 and placing him on his texas ranch. My senator , the late Dianne Feinstein had began a investigation, a demand letter of explanation into b.l.m. practises and a date she wanted responses by. This after 2 yrs of supplying her w bonefide documentation & leads. She died, no one in washington has answered my inquiries as to what has become of her investigation. They are all focused on a rediculos election. Indeed, america's phoney face mask has been shattered, and the whole world is troubled by unfolding threats. We each can choose to be passionate and do the next right thing for a wrong one finds unbearable. I tell everybody i know about your video's, i 100% believe in you & your family's efforts. I suscribe, and you are my go to at the end of my day. Thru no fault of my own, i now have 10 cats, all of whom are now spayed & nuetered, with proper vet care...shots, ect. 4 parrots, 2 dogs, all who have found sanctuary in me and me in them. I advocate for wild horses and burros in a world gone wrong. I have empathy for everything living in the world, but i'm about living and have learned to not allow it to eat me alive, but instead use it as fuel to do the next right thing. God bless you and your team in your efforts to educate folks on righteous horsemanship. Yes, you are, as your over the pond citizen's say...BRILLIANT! Long may you run!!!

I appreciated very much your explanation of the problems of hand feeding. When I had my own horses (a few decades ago), I used to say "I follow the carrot training method" because I taught a lot of tricks with carrots. Although this worked well for me, I see now that I was very lucky to be working with two horses that were very mild-mannered and non-aggressive to people. They had a good foundation from someone before they came to me. I see how things could have gone wrong, and I wouldn't have known that I was a source of the problem. Your videos are helping so many horse owners around the world.

Brilliant VLOG! I have no doubt had you not been there, prepped the mare and then on top of that, interjected your ways of doing things when she went for the jugular (no pun intended), it would have been a very different outcome.
The Vet honestly seems to think she had the magic touch. No worries Steve … your followers know darn well why the mare allowed all of this to happen!
There are many horse people who don’t stop long enough to listen to others … and assume their ways are superior to anyone’s around, even when they’re not getting the same results as to what you have been able to accomplish time and time again!
It must be so frustrating for you when you get around others who have such a resistance to a more logical and empathetic way of handling horses. I totally agree on the feeding by hand aspect … and I see many handlers on various VLOGs who do feed by hand. But as you have said, some of them are experienced in what they do as can read a horse.
But I can also tell, even though some manage with their horses, you can tell the horses are disrespectful and tend to be the kind that are in your face! I’m thinking there are some who may misinterpret that kind of behaviour for affection. However, there are those who are adequate enough to get by with little or no issues. I was definitely guilty of feeding by hand before, when the horses were in their stalls. I wouldn’t do it now though.
Your other pet peeve is the slapping a horse instead of rubbing on them. They’re just as sensitive, if not more so … I know I don’t like to be slapped. Funny the things we were taught to do when first being around horses as a young person, total absence of empathy for the horse!
As always I look forward to all your videos and love watching them with my thinking cap on. Surprisingly, I always learn something new even though you use the same techniques.
I do feel bad for that mare and it’s quite obvious things are not going well for her at the moment. She definitely appears to be somewhat lame though. I’m not sure it’s Cushings but definitely there was something going on with her back end. She could not fully disengage the few times you had her go around. 😢
I do hope she’ll be okay. What a blessing to have an owner like Sarah. And I hope your feelings weren’t bruised with the way the Vet dismissed your influence of her being able to do her job, in a manner without anyone being hurt. Hats off to you!
You have shown all of us just how knowledgeable you are with the understanding of a horses’ psyche, which has been so instrumental in working with the horses, the likes of which would otherwise have to be euthanized. Definitely worth your weight in gold!
    Happy Trails! 🙏🙌❤️🇨🇦🐴🤠🌺🌸
P.S. Congratulations Dan and Charlotte James!

Happy Anniversary!! All the best to you both. And thank you for your hard work with horses and with providing us these videos. Always something to learn. The biggest lesson for me is how hard is it for us humans to listen to understand what you have to say (most listen to reply, firstly - hopefully later when viewing the video that will change) and change our actions. The horses seem to respond immediately when correct actions (in horse language) are taken. Same with all animals. Our species is far from superior lol. And this is just my personal observation and not meant in a bad way at all. Cheers to everyone! Edit: Wonderful to hear about the wedding. Massive congratulations to Charlotte and Dan!

I used alot of similar techniques. I had hands on my stallion the day he was born. I wish I could tell you all my stories. You are a wonderful horseman! Your videos help me not to miss it as much. I have to say that I give the school horse I ride alfalfa cubes and she is perfectly polite. But one day I gave her an apple slice and she was all over me! So I rarely give her apple treats, and only in her stall where I can back her up first! I greatly appreciate everything I have learned from watching these videos!

A tricky situation with a well educated Vet. Recognising your progress was 'at risk', but not forcing the point kept the situation managable. Well handled. I'm not sure why the Vet presented the scissors near the horses mouth. Familarisation would seem a stretch in horse language and if they had been sterilised the smell could be triggering?? Good result and maybe the Vet has now subscribed to SYH.

Just to add to my comment below - I've never owned horses, but I've worked with them and been around them a lot of my life, and also had dogs. And I totally and absolutely agree that using food as a motivator is disastrous in either animal. Horses get pushy and nappy and are constantly looking for treats, and the current vogue for training dogs with treats means the dogs aren't 'hooked' to the owner, but hooked to the hand or pocket they think is going to deliver up the next treat. You only really have to spend time with any animal to learn the basic rule. They do what works for them. But if it doesn't work for you it doesn't work.

The horse that I ride a 16 hand is a retired 1D barrel racing horse. He’s great in the arena, and for the longest time with Over 60 years of riding, it took me months to realize he was arena trained, but he knew nothing about trail riding. It’s been quite an experience because he gets very frightened what advice do you have for me please he’s better with other horses. Basically he says you go first and if you don’t die, I’ll follow.

Well done Steve Dan And Charlotte surviving the weather. Had a 17.3 horse wouldnt be injected for knee injury. ;, the lady vet not very old was frightened of him and not quick enough to inject him to euthanise him (horse was on 3 legs 😢). The most horrendous day of my life ended up with him being shot in the head 😢. The vets attitude was awful and caused me severe depression. Had the horse for 9 years. So kudos to you Steve being so diplomatic.

Steve you are a formidable trainer & if you look at the logic of how the BHS teaches us to be around horses ( everything done from the left etc) is so very wrong. The attitude from the vet is so very typical of the horse world in general . Then there are people like you that challenge the status quo by trying to explain to these people that they basically have no idea how horses think ( though you do it very humbly) The concept of moving their feet to gain a horses respect is not something they had even thought of. The vet was talking to the mare like you would a child. Horses don't understand that at all. Re the awards. In-house is spot on. Your way ahead of your time Steve...yet your methods are time memorial much older than BHS/ clicker training all that nonsense. Even as a child I knew what we were taught was wrong I all ways led from the front.
I know there were many great horseman before you ...but in the UK I think your definitely a pioneer.

Dermosedan oral gel. VERY effective oral sedation for horses Given by vet or Rx to owner with direction. You have a well sedated horse without needles that can have a blood draw with no drama. Oral ace works great with vet approval too. Of course Steve and team did their usual outstanding job, and had the vet listened to him, there probably would have been very little drama either

So happy the blood sample was successfully gotten. I do, however, think the veterinarian did take over the show a bit. I’ve seen this before, & no disrespect for her at all, but some vets tend to believe they outrank all else during their visits. Fortunately the sample was taken but I do feel that had she let Steve do his job, it would’ve gone smoother.
    Just my opinion no shade😊
