    Shirley is by far one of the finest jazz musicians ever. She not only set the bar high she redefined it!! I hear her influence in many jazz musicians including Diana Krall which I believe is a testament to Shirley's brilliance. When ever a musician of her caliber dies we all loose but thankfully her music shall continue influencing aspiring musicians for years to come. Thank-you Shirley Horn for gracing us with your musical brilliance!! Namaste... 💜💕💕

      You are so much on point!!! Barbra Streisand said on NPR that Shirley had the most profound influence in her entire career! I had the opportunity to see, hear and enjoy Shirley's last appearance at the Atlanta Jazz Festival in 2004. I was so touched by her rendition of "Yesterday". She had complete control over the stage and the audience. I'll never forget that moment.

    Miles Davis, having broken out from Parker, was being touted as the latest, greatest thing and skids were greased for big release, tour, and anticipated success. Opening date prior to NYC kickoff was in DC with lots of press. Davis had Horn planned for intro - manager seemed to agree, then reneged at last minute with another act. Davis, never easy, canceled his own appearance if Shirley wasn’t put on. Well, it was done and Ms. Horn done went and stole major thunder. Perfectly Jake with Davis, who had been devoted fan as teenager, and remained so, collaborating on later sessions. Big balls indeed for Miles to follow Shirley, doting press corps fluff notwithstanding.

    It's a bit of a mystery to me (??) why Shirley Horn's swinging version of Billie Holliday's sad-tinged ballad: "I'm Foolin' Myself" -- recorded in 1937 with the Teddy Wilson Orchestra -- appears in this Newport set as both the 4th and the 6th number, unless Shirley forgot she had already sung it once -- which I find somewhat hard to believe -- or unless she likes this number so darn much that it bears repeating!

      Duhran Wilson Well, to her credit, she always acknowledges Shirley!

    • @caponsacchi
      @caponsacchi Před 9 lety +8

      Duhran Wilson Diana Krall sounds more like the foxy Julie London (married to Jack Webb of "Dragnet" fame, then to Bobby Troupe-- the composer of "Route 66"). Shirley was killing it as a local talent in the D.C. area but largely unknown to a wider audience. Then she got the call from Miles Davis, who was in love with her singing and playing. He was scheduled to play on Horn's blockbuster "Here's to Life" album (arr. by Johnny Mandel), but fate intervened (Shirley dedicates the project to Miles in her liner notes.) Diana has the same limited range as Julie and Shirley, plus a sultry but unemotional delivery and locked-in mannerisms. There's a reason some vocalists never become, like Nat Cole, a stand-up act (Nat was one of the 2-3 best jazz pianists of the '40s until he gave up his seat in favor of the really big money as a Sinatra rival). To my ears, Shirley's chord voicings and her touch are more personal and original than Diane's carefully crafted single note lines. Shirley plays piano for Carmen McCrae on the latter's tribute to Sarah, and it makes all the difference. Who would want to attempt to emulate Sarah? Shirley makes it feasible for Carmen through fresh arrangements and sparkling solos. --- Shirley wears this rhythm section like a night-gown, but listen to the heat provided by her drummer. he's no mere "cocktail drummer."
