  • Have you ever wondered what the difference is between a $50 Ryokan and a $500 Ryokan experience in Hakone, Japan? The difference is quite significant ranging from amenities like a private onsen, your own nakai (Japanese maid), a Japanese kaiseki lunch & dinner and even a private pickup and drop off van. First off you may wonder, what is a ryokan? A ryokan is a type of traditional Japanese inn that typically feature tatami-matted rooms, communal baths, and other public areas where visitors may wear yukata and talk with the owner.
    Photos of my experience:
    www.reformatt.com/50-dollar-r...
It had been my dream for over a decade to stay at a traditional Japanese ryokan in Hakone. So, I was extremely pumped to jump into my traditional Japanese robe the minute I walked into the agari-kamachi (or entrance room). The ryokan did include being served by a nakai, a Japanese house maid who serves you green tea, dinner, breakfast and makes the futons ready for sleeping (Japanese sleeping quilts)
The best thing about staying at a luxurious ryokan is the kaiseki dinner which is a traditional Japanese multi-course dinner with a wide variety of Japanese dishes consisting primarily out of vegetables with fish and meat all served on tiny dishes and in bit sizes. During the kaiseki dinner you sit on zaisu which are legless chairs which can be uncomfortable to sit on for non-Japanese people.
The luxurious ryokan did include a fancy onsen (Japanese hot spring) on the rooftop which is one of the most relaxing experiences you can have in Japan.
To do a proper comparison I stayed a cheap $50 hotel as well. Gaku Guesthouse offers a Japanese style room with sleeping futons, clean amenities including a laundry machine and a fancy Japanese bidet toilet but also a brand-new billiards table in the garage. Gaku Guesthouse is a great place to meet other travelers as well.
I was surprised how quiet it was in the Japanese mountains compared to the inner city of Tokyo.
Make sure to stay at least 1 night at a luxurious ryokan in Hakone to complete your journey to Japan. You'll have incredible stories to share with your friends and family.

Have to remind ourselves that while in the west we expect a cheap place to be unsanitary and smelly, but in Japan they provide 200%, whether its a 50 or 500 dollar place both.

Awesome video, i'm glad you enjoyed your stay at both Ryokans. There are many options in the Hakone area and prices vary from Ryokan to Ryokan. We stayed at the Kinokuniya Ryokan which is pretty much mid-tier at about $ 150 - 200,- per night (per person, Ryokans charge per person instead of per room). Pretty much all of them include Onsen (private and/or public), Kaiseki dinner and breakfast. Ours had both Japanese style breakfast and Western breakfast so we got to choose.

When you have ridden your motorcyle 300 km from Akita (heading back to Tokyo) and it's a rainy night and you are in Echigo Yuzawa looking for a place to crash for the night, I will gladly take a $50 ryokan every day of the week. You get your own 6-tatami room, a warm futon, there's an onsen, and a beer vending machine, so you have everything that you need. (Better than trying to set up a tent in the rain or sleeping under an overpass.)

First guest house probably has no dinner and breakfast. A ryokan usually includes dinner and breakfast in its rate. Second ryokan must be the price for 2 people with dinner and breakfast. The ryokan looks old and the dinner looks ok. They should charge $150 to $200 range. I assume that you didn't spend $500 but $500 had a good impact to get attention. You could stay much nicer place (room and dinner) if you spend $500. I still think that this is a good video.

I spent $500, it was high-season, everything was already booked, often an issue in Hakone. Yes, it was for 2 people, since it was the minimum booking price for that specific day. My advice, book way ahead. Plus, I wanted a rooftop outdoor onsen.
