I'm an Engineer. A Biomedical Engineer. I don't know squat about screws and bolts and stuff. My wife who is a Civil Engineer wants me to start fixing stuff. So, I went to graduate school and got a Master's in Mechanical Engineering. I can design stuff. But they never let me handle welding and taking things apart ha ha! This is the gold standard for how-to videos! Even though no tripod was used, the positioning of the camera was perfect for the viewer to see and understand along with the explanation. No annoying background music or crazy editing. Also, no annoying commentary on someone's life story as to how they got to learn this, etc.
I love that a lady does all the commentary and demonstration. Wish there were more like this.

12 hours after watching your video, I successfully completed my 22×30 concrete porch with strike anchors and a powerful hammer drill (of course we learned the hard way that a regular drill would not work on concrete- lost a day)...
HOWEVER, thank you very much! We were able to drill 80 concrete holes and ground 20 post bases under 2 hours with the proper tools and anchors!!
After using the rental hammer drill with ease, I went out and purchased my own personal hammer drill!! I love it!!

just so you know, I'm building a new deck for my grandpa who has done everything for me, hes a little too old to be working out in the heat and I wanted to surprise him with a new porch for the front of his house since he always talks about wanting one. I grew up without a father figure and since my grandpa worked in coal mining for about 65 years he was out of the country a lot of the time. so I never really got taught how to build anything or work on anything, but I didn't let it stop me im a successful welder now and I own two welding companies, I watch your videos for things i don't know how to do with this, like concrete anchors and such. you've filled a big whole in my building knowledge and you're helping people do great things.

I'm pretty handy as a retired utility lineman, and I always recommend your videos to my beginner DIY friends. You're a great teacher, but one small quibble on this video is that you could have shown a variety of clamps to illustrate why you might be using these fasteners in the first place.

Great video. I used the blue ones. The countersink is nice because you're almost always screwing wood to concrete. So it sinks itself into the stud or plywood.
Your videos are excellent. I have used several for DIY stuff I had to do. You're an excellent presenter and know your stuff!

I’ve never wanted to get one of these hammer drills. Now, after watching this, I refuse to drill ANYTHING around the house until my wife gets me a hammer drill! Our anniversary is a month away!
(Obviously I will drill something immediately if she tells me to because I am a well trained hubby, and I like to live, but one can hope!)

I’ve watched a few videos on concrete anchors and none explained it as succinctly and simply as you have. Great video!
Nice video. Great info for any DIYer to have.
TIP: Make sure when driving threaded anchors to back the nut off the end until end of the thread is recessed below the nut face a tad (so you are pounding on the nut not the threaded rod). This will keep the hammer from buggering up the end of the threads making it difficult to remove the nut when attaching whatever the fastener is to anchor to the concrete.

So much better than the old "concrete nails", and even the types that use a firearm to blast them in, don't always hold. My own personal experience has been with something called a Tapcon screw, I like the ones you used that flare out. Sort of like one of my favorites, the Molly Bolt to use on drywall to get a firm spread out hold once it compresses back against the wall.

About 27 years ago, I refinished an area of our basement with stud walls and sheetrock. The stem walls are thick reinforced concrete, as is the slab. I used 3/8" lag bolts and shields for attaching the sleepers. At a pull-out rating of 3/4 ton, it was a pretty good solution. I'm surprised that lag shields weren't covered here.
I've never secured anything to concrete and wanted to find a good video to understand what to do. This was the first one that came up and the first one I watched. It is also the only one I watched because it was done in a precise and easy to understand manner. Thank you!

Yeah, I happen to be based in an Asian country where I have yet to find compressed air, so I've been using a straw. You can expect to have your face covered in dust, and don't do it if you're allergy-prone.
You can attach a straw / pipe to a 1m piece of plastic tubing (like they use for wine, fuel, hospitals, aquariums or whatever), then you don't get dust in the face when you blow a hole through that.
Rather than a can of air, I'd use an air compressor or even a manual air pump.
Use a straw! Just do not blow in it: grab your vacuum cleaner and hold the straw into the vacuum end and... tada! You'll be able to make a sufficient seal around the straw and the vacuum end to allow enough suction to clear out the hole. Happy (clean faced) drilling :)

Also, if you want to nail in regular nails, drop a piece of wire in there, and pound the nail in right along side the wire, and it'll stay, like a nail in wood. If you want to remove the nail, especially if you're using a duplex nail, just use a nail remover or the claw on a hammer, and yank it out. Something I learned in carpentry at community college. I watched to learn about the screws. Thanks for the video.

Thank you for this! my tip: instead of a can of compressed air, I use a child's air balloon pump- place the tapered nozzle into the hole and blow out the debris.
I use the one that came with my nikon camera kit.. squeeze squeeze.. lol
I use a small pouch that is taped underneath the hole and vacuum the hole itself to get the dust... much cleaner... 😁
Or consider vacuuming out the dust, instead of breathing the crystalline silica. Silicosis is major bummer, which is why all new concrete drills will soon come with dust vacuum attachments.

Wedge anchors look similar to Sleeve anchors but can only be used in solid concrete, not in other masonry materials such as brick or hollow block. Why? Do you have a video of a wedge anchor cut away failing in something other than concrete?
Jules Bartow the wedge bolts strength relies entirely on its threads cutting into the concrete, so having as much thread contact as possible is best.
Umm, I hate to ask a stupid beginner's question but..... if you are tightening the nuts to make the bottom of the anchor flare out then how do you attach something to the anchor. Did you forget to mention that once the anchor is set you can remove the nut and washer and attach whatever you need to?
+Theresa M you would put what you want to assemble with a hole in it then insert the anchor through the hole, and go for it

yes i was wondering the same thing, expected to see a video demonstrating the installation of an anchor for a lag screw for example altho i ges at the beginning you didn't show that as one of your examples so i shuddint have been surprised. i already own too many tools and have no room but i ges i'm going to have to finally go out and get a hammer drill. absolutely great video, patient clear instructions, no ego. i will look for more of your stuff on CZcams.
