This is a very good video, but I gotta admit that I was interested in your explanation of why we don't bond in a sub panel, but you steered your viewers to another CZcamsr and that works for me and is appreciated. You always do a clear and excellent job of explaining the how to's on electrical topics.
I watched the video that you recommended, which I haven't seen before by Benjamin, although I've seen many of his other videos and he also is very good and smart, thanks. I learned about this topic from other people, but probably the most from Dustin Stelzer (Electrican U). He is excellent at explaining the why's and how's when it comes to electricity and electrician topics. I'm not an electrician, but a DIY'er interested in learning this stuff.
Yep those guys are both great. I could have explained it but as you know it my videos if you've watched any other ones I talk a lot and it would have taking me awhile to figure out the quickest route to do the video that's why I figured I would just send people elsewhere. I appreciate you watching and commenting
Thank-you for posting the video. You explained it very well and kept on subject, no rambling on and on like some videos. A+
I appreciate you watching and commenting ☺
Sir, I think you mean, "Grounding side, not Grounded side," to be bonded to the sub panel box.
I hope you can answer this question because its confusing to me.
My friend needs a sub panel at his house. So we watched a couple videos and decided to try it. He has a shutoff panel outside at the meter so his "panel" doesnt have a main breaker. I guess his main panel would be considered a "sub panel". Saying that, the videos I have been going by shows putting a 6ga ground wire and 3ga neutral on the neutral of the feed panel, then when inside the sub panel, putting the ground on the ground bar and the neutral on the neutral that sits between the two hots. The panel Is a square D. Thank you sir for the videos and i look forward to hearing your thoughts 👍👍👍
Unless the sub panel is in a separate structure with no metal conduit in between.
What are you referring too?
Ive found several places online that say the subpanel should not be bonded on either side. It even says throw away the green screw. Your the first one ive seen that says bond the ground bar.
How else would you make the panel can safe?
He is bonding the ground to the panel. Not bonding the ground and neutral in the sub panel. He says to only bond in one spot which is correct. and that main spot needs to be the first point of disconnect.
Nice video… What would happen if I use EMT from main panel to subpanel is my case??. Thanks
Nothing just cost more.
I have an outside square D meter box with a disconnect, is the panel coming off of the disconnect described as a sub-panel?
A Sub Panel is anything after your first point of disconnect means. So if you have a breaker in your meter that disconnects power from there to another panel then it's a sub panel. Make sense? So if I am reading your question right then yes to your answer
I happened to stumble across this video and decided to watch.I think you did a gr8 job of explaining what you're doing but there was one thing I found that you left out.
While its true there should be no continuity between the neutral & ground bars and the neutral and the panel,,,,,,after you bring the wires in from the disconnect and attach them,,, you absolutely will have continuity between the ground bar & the neutral bar & neutral bar & panel.
As you have it set up with it being not attached to the disconnect your statement was correct. But once the wires are connected your statement regarding continuity is no longer true.
I'm about to change out a bad GFI. My question is about the replacement, is it supposed to "test" and click prior to being installed? When either button is pushed in my hand, they do not engage or "click".
Excellent question, no it will only work when it's is connected to power. Good luck and thanks for watching and commenting ☺
It looks like my sub panel has that bar but not in the front like yours. it kinda of looks like it runs across but its recessed.
Then you will have to add a ground bar to the panel it self
Does that make sense?
Ok I think I got it straight. If you buy a main panel and use it as a sub. (meaning it has a main breaker cut off) Then you remove the bonding bar that connects the neutral and ground bars. Then use the green screw to bond the ground bar. Where as a regular sub panel you have to buy and add a grounding bar which when installed is grounded to the panel. Does that sound right?
Absolutely, when you have to buy the bar it's is bonded because of the extra screws the you have to install to hold it to the can itself. You are exactly right with your statement
yes that makes sense. I wonder could I send you a picture of the can and you can tell me for sure if this is what i think im seeing?
Yes definitely send me one. I'll give you a my opinion
