@slappy At my job, there was a man who worked around an auto-saw. The saw cut the plastic lumber every so many feet. A hydraulic clamp would clamp down, there would be a three second pause, and then the saw would come up and cut.
He was lazily using the autosaw to cut scrap lumber up for regrinding, when a piece got stuck in there.
Against all common sense he reached in to the autosaw, around and past the safety guards to clear it out, when the hydraulic clamp came down with 1400 pounds of pressure and caught his hand.
He was forced to sit there, absolutely helpless and unable to escape, for three full seconds, before the saw came up and took two of his fingers off.
He said after, that the pain, was NOWHERE NEAR as bad to experience as what he called the longest three seconds of his entire life. When he knew he fucked up, and was about to lose fingers, and could do absolutely nothing to escape.

Diesel Engines can "Run Away" you have an engineer below waiting to receive orders from the helm. In fairness to the crew sometimes these diesels are so good you literally have to cut off all the air to kill it! It can take some time. Proper maintenance is key to safe travels- remember!

@@seashepherds4959 They should know in advance if it is possible for them to sail below those bridges. Runaway diesel engine can't explain that. In big ships like some of these you can't sail straight ahead and hope for the best.

What gets me is how fast a lot of these boats are going when they hit. The bad decisions obviously started long before they got to the bridge.

They might go with the tide, but most of the small boats make really bad decisions by going under tiny bridges when it is really obvious.

The rudder requires a certain flow over it in order to exert any control. If you go too slow you have no steering.

The one at 00:30 is Potter Heigham bridge in Norfolk, England. There's no excuse for hitting it, as it's signposted for several miles before you get to it, with warnings of it's low height. There are even signs on nearby roads to warn people bringing their own boats about it. It's notorious.

My father managed to hit the bridge at Potter Heigham some years back , that might even be him on the video. Not a lucky bridge for my family as back in the early nineties as my cousin and I in our riotous youth went under it on his small cruiser and got pulled over by the river police for speeding.
And in addition, you can SEE with your eyes that it isn't 100 meters high.
You get this type of idiot on the road in lorries too though so it's not surprising.

I used to skipper largish, 110 ft, passenger boats on a river in a major city. I always thought the boats were only barely adequate for the speed of the current and the number passengers that were sometimes aboard. Before that job, as a sailing boat skipper in open waters, I always thought of rivers as being calm easy waters, if I gave them much thought at all. There is always so much to learn. This is what makes life so interesting.

In Tasmania, all our traffic is stopped when large boats go under the Tasman bridge. In the 70’s a boat knocked the bridge down. Sending cars plummeting 70m inti the water.

I was actually present for one of these clips. The one where the tanker is seen hitting the lift bridge along the Welland canal .You can see the sign for Holland rd. This bridge was never replaced which was a pain because I worked on the other side, which meant that I now had to go miles around to get to work!
I live by the Welland canal. My husband showed me that video. He steers the ships. Not the one that hit the bridge lol. He's on the algoma intrepid right now which is brand new. They just brought it over from Europe about a week ago and he's one of the first wheelsmans on it. I think it's pretty cool. They are anchored right now due to the high winds we are having.

Guess that's the one at 2:20? What was the cause: bridge not fully raised, high water/incorrect calculations? It looked pretty nasty for the crew...it appears to have demolished part of the bridge followed by the funnel.
